Xbox 360 Controllers to work with Longhorn

Wasn't this announced like a year ago? With the XNA hoopla?

Anyway I'll stick with my PS2 pad and PS2-2-PC converter. I'm hopelessly used to it and only Dual Shock 3 can change this.

Exactly. They said that gaming interfaces would have been unified through Xbox and PC. This is a good confirmation :-)

I'm wondering now if this means that mouse and keyboard will be usable in 360 games...

Fuck Longhorn.

I'm sticking with XP. MS isn't bilking me out of more money for yet another OS. XP is getting WinFS also, so there is even less of a reason for me to upgrade.

I could swear I read that the Xbox 1 controllers are USB. They just have a proprietary connector.

That's true.

They should make it so the controllers work with XP as well. Not everyone is ready to spend even more money and upgrade their computers to play with their new OS coming down the pike.

All future wireless MS keyboards should come with a "ring of light" button, that when pressed, would connect to your X360 automatically for input to it. My PC is pretty close to where I play my games - it'd be handy for me when sending Live messages etc. (i hate the current text input, and a little voice shy ;)). Would be handy for other things too, I'd imagine, if MS is expanding its available web services on X360.

and what's winFS ?

It's the file system for Longhorn. But it's drastically pared back from what they were originally planning, IIRC (even now, to the point of putting it in XP, if Dr_Cogent is correct).

Dr_Cogent may be correct

Maximum PC has reported this, as well as others. Microsoft appears to be waffling on it now.

I knew it!

Yeah it is older, but still good news.

The great thing about this is that PC games will be programmed with all functions with this controller in mind. Plug and play and go!

People are "happy" with this news? Can't see why since no one has seen the thing yet.

The thing that's exciting is not having to buy extra (usually shitty) controllers to play PC games (or emulators). I'll be able to play Rock 'n Roll racing with a buddy and not have to shell out $40 for a couple controllers that suck.

That too, since the 360 controller will be quickly become the PC controller with the largest install base.

yeah, or just a damn ps2/gc/whatever-gamepad-adaptor for 5 bucks.

I have to admit, that is a valid reason.

split-screen games or multiplayer games on the pc? you gotta be kidding!

*sigh* Yeah, I'm talking about split-screen and multiplayer games. What do you think Rock 'n Roll racing is? And you don't think there are any 4-player games on MAME?

What's amusing is that you know that some will write drivers for GNU/Linux, Windows XP and Mac OS X within months of the Xbox 360 being released. By the time Longhorn is finally released (whatever year that may be), it will be old news.

Some news directly from Major Nelson's blog. I don't think it's so important for creating a thread of its own, so I'll post it here. Feel free to make a separate thread if you think it will be needed.

It's about the new console startup animation, you can read it here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/MajorNelson?m=769

Today, I became one of the very first people to see the opening animation for the next generation console. That’s the animation that you see when you turn the unit on. I can’t say much more then that…but I will say this: it’s really cool and goes by very quick…so quick that I asked to see it again
Not very revealing, indeed...

i think the controllers that come with the 360 will be wired usb controllers. wireless will be seperate and optional ala wavebird.

This is cool, but not good news for MS in my case, just gives me another reason to buy PC versions of 360 games.

Good news for me though.

this was announced to be one of the aspects of having XNA, so its not new. but good to hear the reinforcement all the same. hell even if i don't get the X360, i'd buy a controller to play certain pc games that need em. PC gamepads are shit.
