Notice they used the duke pads in this render. Why? I have no idea, it's just plain weird...

Clever of MS to have a standardized kiosk like this. How many of the advanced kind are they gonna ship out?

I don't have this number, but I've been told a kiosk costs about $2500, without the tv screen and the console of course.

the only cool thing about it is that they've set the x360 vertically. otherwise it's just like any other kiosk out there...

Is this official? Any idea if it's US-only or for everywhere?

I just can't imagine this lasting very long in some chav-filled cities in Britain...

This comes from a site (owned by a very big software reseller) in belgium.

MS is going to be selling these to retailers at a loss, or just giving them away?

I realize having the kids play 360 games in HD is the only real way to sell it, but I thought this system was supposed to make a profit?

Depends on continent. For example, in US retailers typically pay for POS gear. In other countries companies take it from their marketing budget and give them to retailers for "loan".

I've long wondered why kiosks cost so much. Surely there's not $2.500 worth of materials in such a kiosk. Assembly can't take long. Anyone know why they're so expensive?

Did you see what happened to the DS pods in Britain?! A week after release, I couldn't find one that wasn't scratched and ruined...I even found one with teeth marks in the console ffs :lol

Maybe they're using the duke pads to keep small children from wanting to put there filthy unwashed hands on it, pretending they're playing while all there actually doing is keep their charecter bumping into the god damn fucking wall! All the while you just stand there, waiting patiantly, while this kid with his oversized head looks at the pretty colors, so that you can actually PLAY the game for five minutes! I hate those fucking kids.

Short version: Small quantities and assembled by hand. Say there would be 10.000 retail outlets in the US. Doing plastic molds for that quantity is expensive and you can't really do a production line for such a small quantity. Materials and components need to be fire-safe and extra durable, as they will take a lot of beating. The unit is also very bottom heavy to prevent it from being pushed down like a magazine rack, which adds to shipping cost.

Powerful sound experience enabled through built-in headphone jacks.
Read: Now everyone who has no intention of getting the Xbox 360 will never leave your store. When using their own headphones to fully experience the Xbox 360 aural experience, they won't be able to hear you telling them to "get the fuck out"!

Very nice, succinct reply. I was just about to (try to) say the same thing.

Yeah, that's actually going to be a real problem for sales reps trying to get kids out. You can't touch them, so all they can do is wave your hand between their eyes and the screen. At that point the CSR looks like he's being rude, or at least acting out of place.

We had this kid named Omar at the store I was at... God, I'm glad I won't be working retail anytime during this dawning kiosk w/headphones era.

I'm surprised no one catched point #4.
Stores could get exclusive skins/characters/whatever and have the possibility for everyone coming to the store to get them directly from the demo unit. Quite a nice idea to get people to come back to the store as often as possible.
Edit: That was point #5 of course.

This won't be the case with the Xbox 360 units thanks to that quite big Samsung agreement with MS a few months ago.

NIntendo tried this back arround the time Pokemon for gamecube came out. They installed teh GBA link cable to all their interactives and people could get a new pokemon character.

I've haven't seen the new units anywhere...and to be honest it almost seems rather moot at this point with PS3 a year away. But better late then never I guess. Wonder if they'll use the same models for PS3.

I was stunned at how bad GT4 looked on the old screens...it almost looked like a first generation Dreamcast game.

Violent, loud, aggressive people with ridiculous fake jewelry...usually drunk and on drugs. Does white trash cover most of that criteria? :D

They also did something similar with the GBA Pokemon games, where you could get an exclusive Pokemon from TRU.

When do kioks usually show up in stores? The DS kiosks showed up at EB and Gamestop like 3 weeks before launch, I wonder when MS plans to have these in stores to ramp up some hype.
