XBox 360 file system deciphered. Step one completed.

The Xbox 360's DVD file system has been exposed, a coding group calling itself Pi, has claimed.
The group said it has posted source code for a utility that allows discs' files to be extracted and displayed as raw data. The group admits there's not much that can be done with it beyond explore the file-system structure, if anyone is prepared to jump through all the hoops necessary to bring code and disc contents together.

The utility runs on a PC, apparently, but Xbox 360 DVDs are incompatible with PC DVD drives. Since the code won't run on an Xbox 360, users have to create an image of an original disc then transfer that image to a PC.
The utility does not bypass copy-protection mechanisms, the group claims. More to the point, even creating and transferring an image of a disc you own is against the law - if only as a violation of the end-user licence agreement.
However, it is likely to provide the foundation for work seeking to attack the content protection put in place by Microsoft.
According to the Pi people, the Xbox 360's file-system is essentially the same as the one employed by its predecessor console: "Once you get past the protections and down to the raw bits on the disc, its just the standard xboxdvdfs, however the offset and layer breakpoint are different." ®

While this doesn't mean rampant X360 bootlegs any time soon, this was the first step in the fight to begin attacking the content protection system. I was expecting Microsoft to put up a better fight this time out. Why go through all that trouble at the hardware layer and reuse the same filesystem that you know has been exploited?

actually a few days old, I think it was posted but oh well

Ripping stuff from a disc isn't exactly cracking anything major at all.

Its a large step. Now they need to crack the 360 but with the Raw image files of the disks and if they get unsigned code to run on the 360, then you got a bad scenario. Microsoft better hope their secureity measure hold up.

Microsoft should have went with a proprietary disk format...I think it was a large mistake to with regular DVDs.

Wasn't there an interview with an X360 team member who said their attitude towards security hacks this time around was something along the lines of the assumption they can't prevent them from happening, so their approach is to adapt as they go rather than try to anticipate and circumvent ahead of time.

fingers crossed :)

I realise there is much more live integration now, and there'll be firmware upgrades like PSP if I want to play games AND use XBMC360.

So I'll just buy two machines.

I can't find the link, but someone at Microsoft had an interview with someone from BBC news, and he basically said that while they can't stop piracy, they made it so two people couldn't hack their system the same way.

Found it:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4218670.stm

"We've taken security to the hardware level and built it in from the ground up," said Chris Satchell from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group.

"One of the reasons we went with custom hardware design for all our silicon is that it allows us to build security at the silicon level," he told the BBC News website.

"There are going to be levels of security in this box that the hacker community has never seen before."

Part of the motivation behind this is to prevent people from using the 360 to watch pirated films or TV shows.

But Mr Satchell admitted no system was fool-proof and that, with enough time and dedication, the security on the Xbox 360 would be broken.

"There're some really bright people in the world with some really expensive hardware," he said.

"I'm sure sooner or later someone will work out how to circumvent security. But the way we have done the design doesn't mean that it will work on somebody else's machine."

I don't care if people wanna hack their machines and keep it offline as their own supercrazy media-everything box. But I will care if it means cheaters/fucktards are gonna muck up Xbox Live.

I'm still amazed that after all this time, hackers still haven't figured out a way to make PC's recognize XBox discs. One would think they could've made a decoding program or something that is able to instruct the drive how to identify the sectors.

That will mean changing the firmware of the dvd-rom on your PC, and taking in consideration that you can rip an original game using a FTP connection between your xbox and PC I think isn't worth the trouble

Not sure anyone would want to reflash their DVD drive with some information from a guy named L33TH4KR to reprogram their drive to be compatible with the Xbox layout.

theres actually a claimed way to play the isos too

i wnt post the link here since i think its a bannable offense but it involes replaccing king kong on the OXM demo disc with the files from the ripped isos

but noone i know has tried it i think its just BS actually

Reflashing your firmware is a scary endeavor but for the people who have done that and created ISO, all they would need to do is share out the images on a torrent network :D

The following link is a vocal recording of J Allard trying to plead with hackers, asking them "Not to do it"

A few games have appeared in newsgroups already.

just like the PSP at first, these are only raw dumps that no one can play it.

The OXM demo exploit is fake, you don't need to prove it, the simple act of burning the executable file will invalidate the signature so the x360 will not play it.

not raw dumps they have all the actual files and file system intact

but there is no way to test it yet

yes, that's what I mean, you can make an 1:1 copy, you can even see the directories and file structure but no one can test it yet.

All a hacker needs is some buffer overflow? or some little crack in the system. Microsoft did add alot of secureity features though and then you've got Live! which can update patches to the system to plug these holes.

or??? It's not like Xbox piracy really hurt MS's bottom line. I just don't see how cracking the 360 is going to be worth it to anyone other than hackers. Why mod your 360 to play MAME, when you can buy a modded Xbox for 1/3 the price of a new unmodded 360?

Playing copies of video games you get of a bittorrent network isn't the best thing to have happen to your console. 3rd party developers will see this and want Microsoft to fix the problem.

This isn't just about playing Joust on MAME on your X360....

trust me as much as the game companies would like you blieve piracy isnt as widespread as they say

the dreamcasty was pretty bad casue only needed ot burn a disc but for ps2 and xbox it really was not something the mass market participated in

i know 20 people with ps2s and 15 with xboxs and im the only one who even KNEW you coudl pir8 games on them

DONT BLIEVE THE HYPE
hahaha
