Xbox 360 NBA 2K6 preview

in other news klee. EGM shows GR:AW as being a hot title in 2006???? the better not ahve pushed it fartehr back than late december. this launch should be hot depending on whats launch and whats launch window, although NBA and PGR3 would last me a couple months by themselves

GR:AW should be considered next gen

one more coat of paint and some polish would push it there, imo. a game that makes 99% of the GA go "WOW" (like MGS 4 and NBA 2K6) should be considered next-gen in my book. I think X05 will push a few more games into the fold for sure.

It looks really good, but it seems like they didn't use the hardware to improve on the gameplay, sadly. Maybe next year, when they know the next gen machines better. Also, Shaq doesn't look like Shaq in those videos.

As good as the players look, I wish the backboard/net looked a lot better. How hard can it be to design something that's relatively static? Realistic net swishes should also be something to work on.

You play 2k6? The net animations are pretty damn good, if not a little fake.

I'm sure a few more games will make the cut to "true" next-gen

Ehh, Kameo Oblivion and Saints are already there IMO. If you compare them to games with similar scope last gen, they look many, many times better.

In the gamespot video interview, they mention that they improved the AI for the Xbox 360 version of the game. They mention that the multi-threading capabilities of the system allowed them to have the AI make better decisions for individual players, think as a team, and change their minds about their strategy.

Yes, they look great, but they aren't quite considered as "WOW" next-gen titles just yet (either because of frame rates, animations, lack of detail, effects, etc.)... I'm sure they will be after X05, though.

Agreed... it's definately next-gen wow material for me.

This is the first sports title that has really looked next-gen to me. The images look great and all, but what really impressed me was the animation. This entire generation, the animation has looked really off to me and just didn't look natural. They finally changed that with this game and it really looks like a real NBA telecast.

Holy.... gah... gahgkjslfsldflsdkfj
...
...
ok, the sweat's a little overdone but....
HOT DAMN.

There's Still Hope for a Next-Gen™ Christmas:

-NBA Live '06
-Madden '06
-Ridge Racer 6
-Saint's Row
-Top Spin 2
etc.

I'll update this list as we pass through X05... I'm sure a few more games will make the cut to "true" next-gen :)

the only game that could have possibly been done this gen from that list is ridge racer and even thats a stretch considering the resolution, draw distance and texture work.

He, you might be surprised by this one.

If Power and Magic is still making it. I have all the confidence in the world. Blim just basically alluded to the same thing

Yeah PAM is still working on it. But AFAIK the lead designer and his second have quit the team after Top Spin so the gameplay is not completely safe yet. We'll see in 3 days for this, but the graphics have said to have improved a lot since E3.

Sweet fancy Moses. The clothes really do make the man. I'm impressed b/c it's looking really fucking close to that E3 render. Feedin' me grapes. :D PEACE.

I still want to know why Shaq is bringing the ball up the court in that video. :P

I don't know why I've avoided this thread until now. Probably because I was so turned off by EA's next gen efforts, I didn't want my hopes crushed. Incredible results, VC. This does stand shoulder-to-shoulder with PGR3 as showing the true potential of next gen soft on 360.

Shaq: Sure, I'll be your spokesperson but I want to be in a clip where I play point guard, I want you to make me handle the ball better than Kobe, okay?

VC: Anything you want Mr. O'Neal.

It really does look amazing, there isn't much to say other than it sucks that VC didn't have a chance to show us what they could have done with NFL 2K6. I have big hope and expectations now with MLB and the NHL franchises...and this isn't a "graphics whore " comment, it's an established fact that VC has made these games extremely playable and now with the right hardware in tow the visuals will set them apart from the rest of the bunch....and maybe take some casuals away from EA.

Blimey! looks totally amazing. This pops two ideas into my head:

1) A huge jump like this could fuck up EA bad. If their NBA live is blown out of the water by this title, then NFL 2kx could be laughing for the entire rest of the next generation. EA may never catch up. Who is the current leader in volume for NBA games?

2) This + PGR3 is the sort of thing that gives MS a lifeline. I'd dismissed them as being steamrollered by Sony when PS3 comes out. But graphics like we are seeing now make it much much more difficult for Sony to simply win with graphics.

Blim, I agree with your point.

Of course I thought 'x' game on PSone looked like a photo and it didn't, but it is going to take a huge amount of effort to make this stuff look bad.

I think you underestimate the blindness of EA sheep. EAs sports games will sell simply because people know EAs games, they trust EAs games and PR will still be able to say things like "#1 football game of 2005".

Exactly...also some ppl have been burned with the 2k games in the past and wont give this a chance anyways.

I don't have the numbers handy, but 2k did really well with the last ($20) version. We'll know soon, but that may have bought a bit of brand loyalty.

PR will still be able to say things like "#1 football game of 2005".

or "#1 NFL game of 2005!" that would be hilarious if EA did it :lol

but seriously this looks incredible. can't wait to see what that VC Legends football game looks like.

and by the way, if there is ANYONE from VC or 2k sports or whoever please listen to me. RELEASE A GENERIC FOOTBALL GAME THAT MIMICS THE NFL! have a league and so on, and imaginary teams/players ("Jess Garthia leads the San Francisco Rainbows to an undefeated season!") Then, include one hell of a uniform/player editior so those of us with enough imagination could recreate the NFL teams/players if given enough time. also include a tool to upload/download files from other people. we would have identical NFL leagues up in no time.

i would be willing to pay full price for a game like this. i think nfl 2k5 was a few fixes away from being on the same level as madden (i'll spare you the "but then again it has been a few fixes away for 3 years..." speech this time), so i think it would be worth the time. plus, you wouldn't have to pay the NFL royalties and if the game looked awesome enough it would sell decently

They had a game that allowed this type of customization for NES, it was called Baseball Simulator 1000, it rocked!! I agree though, i loved the VC style of gameplay, although i'm struggling in Madden i do enjoy Madden, but i have a passion for Sega Sports and VC.

As of last June:

NBA Live PS2 1,616,214
NBA Live Xbox 608,334

NBA 2K5 PS2 893,014
NBA 2K5 Xbox 704,812

The 2K Xbox version outsold EA's Xbox version. The games were priced $20 and $30 respectively. If this trend holds, and there's no reason why it shouldn't since early adopters will be more hardcore gamers, NBA 2K6 should outsell NBA Live on the 360 and if Live is not up to par, look for the gap to be even wider. EA needs to get its shit together and in a hurry or they risk becoming the underdog, in term of sales and in term of respect and mindshare, in most sports other than Football. The momentum is definitely in 2K's corner as they release their slate of 360 games, and follow it with a MLB game in the spring. EA may not have a chance to counter until the next iterations of football next summer...

Why not allow it? You can have the same colors, cities, even player's build and looks as long as you don't use pictures, and anything officially licensed why not? I mean the same reason no one could stop me from making a player named after me, is the same reason why they could stop me from re-creating the entire NFL.

have you taken art direction into consideration when thinking of games like ridge racer, kameo, perfect dark zero, and dead or alive 4?

and top spin 2, ghost recon: advanced warfighter, and elder scrolls: oblivion deserve to be at the top of that list.

the games that aren't getting mentioned are the games that need to step it up.
