xbox 360 to be sealed shut?

"Microsoft has an answer for mod chips with Xbox 360. The case is going to be sealed up tight using current fireproof safe technology. There is no mechanisim to open it. Microsoft is willing to replace entire units if internal parts go bad as long as the box is never hacked." --Gamewire Magazine

can anyone confirm this? sounds a bit ridiculous..

well the point is to prevent "casual" hacking, where you can get a modchip installed for just $50.. I don't think MS cares if someone can only hack his own xbox.

But sealing the case tight to achieve this sounds ridiculous.

G4 TV dissed the Revolution's 20 years of Nintendo game downloads by saying that hey you can do that on the Xbox360 using a mod chip for $20 :lol :lol

We just need on of these

Probably BS. Makes sense though, they have the HDD removable so they'll be able to save any data if your 360 breaks, theres really no need to have it openable. And even if people do get it open and mod it, not many will fancy knocking their 360 to shit to get at it's insides.

hrm. Modchips will simply require you to break you case, and replacement cases will be all over the place. Unless MS actually makes it so that opening the case = destroying the internals

They'll do you one better. All of the internals will be sealed in epoxy, like in the Stealth Bomber.

the insides are in vacuum, hence the inhale type shape.

in case you all missed it, there was this human being putting together a dismantled xbox 360 on a table with ease, in one of the unveiling videos.. :)

It's called a Dremel tool. :rollies: It would have to made of tungsten or thick steel for a Dremel to have problems cutting it. I cut my car doors and rear deck with just two cutting wheels. That's right, I don't think an Xbox360 is gonna pass a side-impact test anytime soon. So, where there's a will, there'll be a way to get into that case to mod it. If you're modding a console, you're probably not worried about voiding the warranty anyway. PEACE.

Doesn't count... he assembled it using only 1/3rd his power.

Xbox 360 - the worlds first disposable console :lol

Anything wrong, we don't fix it

worked for Sony, didn't it?

PS2 was relatively easy to fix for a variety of problems both by users as well as fixable by EB/Gamestop/Manufacturer.

Nice troll attempt, though. (Mine was better ;) )

lollerz. i can't believe even you would try to spin that. the failure rate of ps2 when they would discuss it internally at gamestop was obscene. and to suggest that all these people out there were "easily" fixing their ps2's every time they quit reading discs is ridiculous. i say this as someone who has opened up and 'fixed' quite a few. if you believe the gamefaqs post that it's as simple as cleaning a lens to keep those problems at bay, you've never messed with them much.

ps2 does a lot right, but the reputation for shoddy internal design and poor quality control in it's manufacturing is completely deserved. it's essentially why they had to start fixing them for free at a certain point.

XBox 360: If you try to open it IT WILL FUCKING BLOW UP AND YOU WILL DIE!!1111. Game on.

:lol :lol :lol
That reminds me that I've modded like 10 xbox without even touching any screw.

MC+MA+FTP: Most safe method for softmod

Wow... that is a pretty nice idea from a MS standpoint... if you have the money to throw around might as well do it..

Well, it is running on a MS OS, right? There is a removed HDD that interacts with the OS, right?

There is your answer right there.

I'm not defending the whole "quality control" aspect of the PS2, the subject of so many thousands of threads full of wonderful anecodatal evidence. I'm just saying, that for whatever percentage did have something wrong, you didn't have to "throw it away", you could send it to Sony to get it fixed, or early on, pay some substantial fee to get it fixed.

Yes, this is closer to true than false. I know for certain that they and IBM had been discussing ways to put an amber like coat over the entire control board so that you'd end up destroying the unit if you tried to get in, scrape the amber off, and mod the unit.

Also the subject of several class action lawsuits. Thank goodness for the justice system!

perhaps destroying the case in anyway will emit a signal, and the suits will be coming towards your direction if you try to mod your x360 :P

Jesus christ. I was kidding about the epoxy. That's what they do for top-secret DoD hardware.

so this is the real reason why it has the removable hard drive

your Xbox breaks down you take the HD off send back the broken one and they send you another put the HD in and it's like nothing ever changed

Oh really? What's the failure rate on the PS2? I'd personally like to know what it is compared to any other system for that matter. There's so much anecdotal evidence that I'd be very suprised if any class action lawsuit held water against Sony. For one, I don't think we've EVER seen what the failure rate on the product is. Not to mention, if the failure rates fall beyond not just warranty, but also the MTBF stated in the machine's specs, then it's even harder to hold the manufacturer liable. I wouldn't mind getting in on that lawsuit action, but I find it dubious to say the least.

For the record, I got a PS2 in February 2000 and it didn't start developing problems until late-2002 or so when it stopped reading PS1 games and DVDs. That was after being in a couple brawls (like real fights where it got knocked over and stepped on), as well as living with chronic chronic smokers. I would complain, but I don't think you can expect electronics to survive that kind of environment for too long. :? PEACE.

-1 sale from Demi! :lol

Interesting move by MS. If it happens might the others follow suit? It'd sure be a good step towards killing off casual piracy.
