Xbox 360 unveiled, pics inside (Engadget)

Gorgeous

I am glad they opted for the same analog stick on both sides this time. The difference in the first analog sticks wasn't of any use. I think the buttons look gorgeous with a sslick glass look. I am interested in how well that X glows when it is turned on.

I am surprised we cant see an on/off switch on the front of the controller, but I guess it makes it look cleaner.

I am really interested in what looks like preset buttons around the X. I believe it has to do with XBL's new features. I am guessing you can push it into those directions to pull up things like custom soundtracks, chat, etc...

I am a little weary of how deep that controller goes though. You can clearly see in the bottom of the pic where the controller has something jutting out the back (akin to the N64 controller).

Controller looks nice. The Xbox itself however is fucking disgusting, which isn't much of a suprise. The only console that actually has decent asthetic value is the PS2/PSTwo anyways.

That's called liking a design because of a company. So many of you guys are hating on X360 just cause it's not Sony. If PS3 was a fucking cardboard box with a button on it, you guys would love it. PS2 and PSTwo aren't anything special. None of these consoles are.

Looks to me like the controller is sitting on a pedistal for display.

A lot of the negative reactions to the look of the console were written prior to opening the thread and seeing it. Oh about time. *copy, paste* :lol

and not even very good one at that.

That could just be a stand they used to prop the controller up for the picture. But then again, now that I look at the MTV Party Shot, I see it there too (while the other items are up on clear stands), so I guess you're right.

Meh, I've always thought the PS systems were nothing to write home about. The PSX and Q look kickass, but that is as far as it goes.

I don't know if the console design is ugly. It's more bland, sterile and uninspired. It ellicits no shock, curiosity or hatred, just indifference. Anyway, at least the dreamcast inspired color scheme might prove appropriate. ;)

The controller looks ok though. The remote is ok too. Everything looks so...ordinary. I guess this is the future of gaming...lol. At least the graphics will be prettier.

Dont say that. I dont want to be right. Unless it is only as deep as the N64 controller, I dont want it to be there. I loved the N64 controller, but when you put a rumble pack in there, it was back heavy. If that back section weighs more than the plastic it is concealing, then that could be a problem.

Talk about falling out of the ugly tree and smacking every branch on the way down, then having the tree fall on top of it.

You shouldn't talk about yourself like that. :lol ;p Sorry, but the lack of love was a little thick in that post of yours.

So I'm a Sony fanboy because I like the monolith appeal of the PS2 over the HAL9000 wannabe?

Well going by your judgement that PS2/PSTwo are the only good looking consoles ever...You're either 10 years old, or so stupidly close minded.

PS2 was 2 boxes stuck together, PSTwo is a smaller version...... YAY BESTEST LOOKING EVARRRRR!!

Obviously leaks are coming from elsewhere now - this isn't a cameraphone shot, that's for sure.

You plug in at the bottom to charge? Or is that for the headset?

looks like the same kind of plug my Rio 600 digital audio player has. the USB cord that you used to transer files from PC to the device plugged into it as well as the headset. heres a pic of the USB cord.

Nice find. I think that could be a good possibility, but I also think the port will double as the prot for the headset.

O GOD. MS Start button at 6 o'clock.

I'm not very familiar with this, but why would there be a MS Start button on this?

The PC-ification of Xbox? MS were shy about it before..but maybe not now?

This makes sense, seeing that Gates said the controllers would be usable on both 360 and PC

They wanted more PC shit on the first one, but the console developers were against it

Yes. Because attacking me based on my taste is of course the most dignified and open minded course of action.

Yeah, but I'm wondering if they're jumping the gun a bit. We'll see.

The console itself looks a lot better than the original Xbox but I can't help but think that it would look even better if it was black.

The controller is a whole other story. It looks really cheap/unsophisticated in that close up shot. The old Xbox controller (minus the jewel) looked better IMO.

the button is on every windows media center deck. it's something to do with that.

I don't know...on the one hand it could look stylish with the white color and stuff...but it does look boring...the color I mean. I really like freaky colors. But then again, I don't care much for the design (as long as it isn't expensive I'll take it ;)).

All looks fine to me, although I'd prefer the console to be smaller. I think the custom faceplates will work really well. Shocking how MS have let practically everything leak out though.

I always thought that with what they have in their arsenal, it would benefit them. Like them talking about you'll be able to get music from their downloading service. I mean, that's what they need. Play to your strengths. Watch they put some kind of Office on this, or 360 Encarta. Evidentally, with Tivo and DVD burning, it's more than just games now.

Things look good for MS.

Why?

Negative reactions at the GAF=killer sales.

;)

I like it too, but what's under it?

I am guessing headset connection. Maybe a charger to recharge batteries but I kind of doubt it.

Meh, MS could just go the route Nintendo does and release different-colored consoles and controllers. With the pictured color-scheme, I'm pretty sure that both will look much better in person, anyway.

Based on your complete lack of justification as to why everything save for PS2/PSTwo is asthetically ugly, I'd definitely put you in the stupidly close minded category.

I have no love or alligence to any hardware. If the PS3 is as ugly or worse, I will say so. Same goes for the crazy nuts from Kyoto.

It's ugly, case closed. What can we do about it? Nothing. Those saying it isn't ugly are running damage control. Does MS pay you to defend the looks of their products?

Let's see the games and maybe we can look past that shell casing.

I can't tell. Could be unrelated to the controller. I really like the headphone jack there on the front edge though. I wonder... those two things beside the headphone jack. What are those? Volume control?

Most people here have no schooling in industrial design or any type of artistic design at all, in any sense whatsoever. But they know what they like and they don't like, which brings with it A LOT of baggage since preconceptions and predispositions to the maker can very easily colour judgement. The onus is on the people who dislike the looks to explain WHY if they're going to voice their opinion, without using such non-statements as "bland" and "boring". Of course because of the fact made in the first sentence of this post, there are VERY few people that can do this intelligently, draw from that what you will.

I do a lot of graphic work so I'm pretty confident in my sense of taste, I can live with that.

ninja edit: The PS2/Two is clean but not bland. It also doesn't announce itself with some huge logotype, it leaves that to the PS / 3 color badge which lends it some security in it's branding. Top section is nicely porportioned to the drive tray (with the horizontal bands), and the design is well balanced because of the ports on the left / small power & reset buttons + offset drive tray on the right. Because of the LED's on the top right the bottom blue USB ports are also inoffensive.

What I think will make the console face look better is the addition of an engraving of the word XBOX on the front, that should take some of the blandness of the face design away. The controller looks nice though.

So X360 will likely use a start button, for the interface?

Well probably for a windows media center interface yes. Remember it has to be fully compatible with both media center and Xbox interfaces, so it's gotta have all the buttons both have :P

Surely you understand people have different tastes? Jeez, what you posted here is pretty moronic. Forcing your opinion down everyones throats and calling anyone else a liar. Guh.

Granted, I'm no big fan of the look, but I understand people like different shit dude.

console looks good to me and the controller looks hot

I imagine when we get clear pics of the console it will look even better like the controller does

Something about the design just doesn't please me... could be the curves (or my eyes?). I hope they make some minor changes to the design. The controller is ok.

The plastic on the controller looks too...shiny...um, it's hard to explain. But at least the controller looks user-friendly (no more awkward positioning of back/start and black/white buttons), if it's nice to hold like controller S it will be perfect. But I'm getting Dreamcast vibes from it, not just the color, and that's a BAD thing. Maybe I'm just imagining things. :P

The look of the console is growing on me though, especially if it's not as big as I imagined at first. Looks a LOT better than Xbox at least. :)

I bet it was Elijah that leaked the snaps... using SNAP DS! he made himself invisible using the ring and got past security... or something!

OMFG - That is so what happened. So Elijah was behind Snap DS, or did Utada give him one ?

More observations time:

The covered port at the bottom of the console has been split in two. Thiss probabl means you can open up either side to plug the controllers in for wired access and charging. I fully expect the controller to be usable while you are charging. This would avoid any downtime due to batteries.

I am down-right shocked the camera requires a cord. For having so many innovations and the use of wireless controllers, you would expect the camera to be wireless too.

It is impossible to tell at this time if the headset has wires, but it has been pointed out the port at the bottom of the controller coul be used for the headset.

The harddrive has changed colors again. Now it is a black color (stupid to make it different than the rest of the console).

The power buttom looks recessed, which clears up any confusion on that. That would probably mean that the skins that we found off our colony are either concave themselves, or it could physically change the look of the button by making it raised.

It cant be seen from that pic, but if the eject button points up (and possibly the power button), then that would mean the console is meant to natively sit vertically. This would be a first for a console to be meant to site taller than it is wide.
