Xbox downtime leaves some users unable to boot games (if they hadn't set their console to home/primary)

You cant use your xbox, even if it's on home console.
The network outage caused some malfunction, which makes your xbox not home console.
I thought that was due to certain games having there own DRM check when launched?
(PS doesn't seem to have these DRM checks, so I suspect it's part of the GDK (XDK))

As all mine worked fine, though am in the UK and very rarely am affected by the outages.

US servers got impacted heavily from fortnite overload.
If you are not impacted by this, then the server you are in doesn't have overload.

The drm got impacted by it. So home settings isn't working.

According to some people here, you have to turn off the internet, to play the offline games.

But it is interesting because apparently steam is down significantly more than psn or Xbox and I never notice that. So maybe these outages truly are minimal?
Steam is down once a week for ~an hour on Tuesday for maintenance, but it only affects steamworks, so you can still launch/keep playing all your games and will only give an error if the game uses steamworks for online stuff.

Microsoft has said it expects to fully resolve recent Xbox server outages with a new update in the near future.

The server problems, which were first acknowledged by Xbox's support team on Friday, have resulted in some console owners being unable to launch games that they own for four days.

In an update on Monday, the platform holder claimed there has been a major improvement in the situation, but said it didn't expect to fully fix the issue for a few days yet.

"We've seen significant improvement to the issue that has prevented some users from purchasing and launching games," it claimed. "We expect full mitigation in the coming days with the roll out of a new update.

The replies to Xbox's latest update include many messages from users claiming they still can't boot their purchased games.

According to Does It Play?, a Twitter account dedicated to testing commercial releases to ensure they work entirely internet free, the majority of Xbox games require an online check before they'll boot.

"They absolutely do not have them on PlayStation or Switch," the account wrote. "Trust us we've tested them".

It added: "If the PlayStation servers go down tomorrow permanently, every single player game you own will work offline almost permanently (provided console is working and account was linked). There are a tiny subset of titles that will not.

"Xbox NEEDS to fix their DRM problems. Hand waving won't help… Nobody wins, especially Xbox fans when ALL the catalog eventually becomes inaccessible".

Fixing software issues wont fix server outages. And even if they somehow magically do, they wont fix internet outages from your ISP.

Now my ISP doesnt have many outages but there is around 4-5 a year and when there is no tv and no internet, its nice to have gaming to turn to. If gaming is out because the internet is out then we will have no choice but to spend time with our wife and kids and no one wants to do that.

Xbox player now have a golden chance to reverse this action. If they dont hold MS accountable now, then they will be stuck with this issue for a long time. No console user, should suffer this much, because the console owner, wants their shitty control of how view our games.

Fuck that shit.

I'm an Xbox owner. I'm holding Microsoft accountable. Now what?

It's ok. I just turned on my SNES and could play any game I OWNED without the need for any internet connection whatsoever. And I had a blast!

ok listen, I don't want to justify Microsoft or anyone else in this but I ask myself a question ... will it be time to remodel what we think consoles are today? I will explain better ... I am aware that the change would be in this particular context negative, but it is obvious that everyone in the world of consoles is increasingly decentralizing services, saves, personal settings, security and everything else from local to remote ... I ask myself in the most naive way possible .... why do we expect consoles HAVE to work offline? there are products that even if we have paid we cannot access them without a connection and people accept it without batting an eye. Basically I wonder if this is just a problem of perception and old habits. What do you think?
We expect Microsoft to do better because the competition DOES better. "Why do we expect consoles have to work offline?" Because 2 of the 3 main consoles do.

Stupidest take of the day.
Nothing stupid about it. People complaining about Online DRM don't know that games work fine offline as long as console set to home and you are not using shared accounts.

People who don't have console set to home or using shared accounts having problems mostly.

I was playing Hellblade game pass version and Gears 5 campaign sp offline and AC Valhalla during outage. Games were working for me fine. Obviously games with online features were not working.

Powering your dreams……Literally, cause you have no choice

Sony no better with gt7 tho. Although the backlash has hopefully thought them a lesson.

Console gaming at this point, are no different than cloud gaming.

Why should a console, which primary objective is to play games offline, need consistent internet to play your games?
Its 2022. this is unacceptable. No consoles should force us to treat our devices, like cloud gaming.
But this the future, kinfrey, the future. 🙌🌈

This is a new level of stupidity. What are the odds the ms servers go down tommorow permanently? Less than the sun colliding with earth, I suspect.

Imagine how silly this all looks in 20 years when ms downs the servers and it turns out you can emulate all of these games offline on a basic computer.......oh wait.

What they don't mention there is that most of the software that requires the one-time connection is BC. It's already been proven many times over that XSX native disks don't require the check post install. I sure hope they don't think that digital purchases are going to work forever offline without a check in, I doubt that's happening anywhere.

How is it that in 2022, people still haven't figured out that not all issues effect all players? I was set to home, and no one ever has touched my Xbox but me, so no shared accounts. Still didn't work for awhile.
Bottom line is that there's WAY too many people who like to pretend that their plastic box is infallible.
