Xbox forced it. No apologies, no excuses. Sony was smarter about their reveal.

I don't write long threads.

So for me to sit here and post something even this long means I'm dead serious about this

XBOX forced this show. Games were not fully ready to show and they were writing all sorts of checks their ass couldn't cash.

Yes I'm referring to Halo Infinite mainly. The game was just not ready to be shown and they did it anyway. They felt the pressure, and they banked on the power of suggestion to shroud this mediocre showing.

Eagle Eyed tweets show the pop-in...the bad textures, the simply passable gameplay. There was nothing exciting happening in the trailer. The grappling hook was a black line from Chief's hand to whatever object or enemy he was grabbing. Where's the fuckin hook?

I came away from this reveal feeling betrayed...feeling like my intelligence was being mocked. I don't know what decisions brought us to this point, but I am very worried about the state of gaming in general. Sony's show was not great. Xbox's show was not great. Maybe my expectations are really high, but this is supposed to be showing off Next Gen games. I think I'm entitled to the expectation that I will see SOMETHING mindblowing. Neither show hit that bar.

Sony was smarter to not show gameplay at this point and right now, I'm pretty confident we aren't going to see anything definitive any time soon. Sony was smarter to be very matter of fact about their presentation. They didn't build up expectations. They just said, here's the date, hope to see you there. So after Sony's show, though it was also just "okay" it didn't sting as bad.

I respect Phil, but he can't be saying crap like he has this whole time then have an "okay" showing with like 1 or 2 instances of gameplay. I suppose I'm a victim of my own enthusiasm.

I don't even know if this warrants a thread, but I think Xbox hopefuls need to keep it real. Sony fans should recognize the calculus behind this. Regardless, everything I said and the title preceding stands.

Forced, I mean E3 is every year and so far they showed almost nothing (good)... That's not how you do, "Xbox showcase"...

I actually liked the gameplay?

It was fast and frantic and fun to watch. I haven't played a Halo in a long time so I have no idea how bad they've gotten but I think guys are overeating.

The memes are hilarious though.

Honestly I thought the show was fine. Certainly not an out of the park grand slam like they and their fanboys can't help but hyping it as, but it was a double. I wish they would have revealed the price, talked about how it will enhance older games. The Obsidian part of the show is what saved it.

Hence the "writing the checks their asses couldn't cash"

Eagle eye? God dam bat's eyes could see that pop in.

The Halo infinite gameplay looked fun, I liked the gunplay and grappling hook.

Graphics were definitely underwhelming though.

I'm trying to give credit for the other games, but fuck that eyesore of a Halo demo is burned into my retinas

Great post. I never thought 12 flops could look this bad but the fact that Spencer and Co greenlit this means they really only care about the existing install base. If it's not ready now...they must be having some serious issues optimising this...

I mean MS opened with this and they didn't even just drop the ball but they showed incredible weakness from what I'd supposed to be their flagship game. I still can't believe what a mess the game is in and it's scary to think this is next gen. After finishing 3rd you'd think they'd just go back to the 360 template and focus on the games.

Major Nelson jumps on RDX podcast with TimDog and friends for reactions. Literally states that they "showed games at varying stages of development". Says that shit with a fuckin smile like we're supposed to be like "Oh okay, that's fine then"

Seriously. They know their hand ahead of time. Why do they overpromise and underdeliver? Wouldn't it best to set realistic expectations?

Agreed

All the pop-in, the bad textures, the warthog doesn't even kick up dust when it drives on grass and gravel. The game is NOT READY it needs to be delayed

Agreed. Although it's clear what they showed was an old build.

The left is what they showed live, and the right is from the 1 minute trailer.

This picture also shows more detailed textures and shadows from what we saw in the live reveal:

Still. It should be looking and performing better. I honestly hope they delay it.

The decision to program games to run on every piece of XBox hardware will go down as the single dumbest strategy in gaming history, I confidently predict.

It will be the same as the 2013 debacle of "TV! TV! TV!" and always on DRM.

I was so surprised that HellBlade 2 was not shown at all. They had a developer diary. I honestly thought we would get a big ol walk through of that game. It's the first game we've ever seen on Series X. I wonder how far off that game is. I really wanted to see that game.

I agree to some extent but at the same time it isn't an excuse. They didn't take notes from Sony after all those years? Look at how Sony are building their fanbase. Why? Because they DELIVER. Yes, even if they announce games early but they still deliver at the end. I don't remember the last time MS delivered something worth noting.

I think Gears 5 was fantastic. I liked State of Decay 2, Phantom Dust remastered, Forza Horizon 4...but no really hard hitting games. So yea I agree. They haven't had any monsters in their first party closet in a hot minute.
I don't even think Fable is going to ruffle many feathers. Halo is on fuckin life support.

What am I looking forward to at this point? Avowed? Everwild? I mean, I'm interested, sure. But as an unbiased gamer I can say this without blinking...where are the games sitting at the calibur of Horizon Zero Dawn? Where's the must play multiplayer online games? They do exist in the 3rd party space.

Everyone shitting on Nintendo for their direct mini and now both PS5 and Xbox have shown their hands. Nintendo was smart to wait to show their upcoming direct. They're gonna fucking run away with the trophy. Only Pokemon Snap has been shown.

1 minute trailer
What 1 minute trailer?

I honestly thought we would get a big ol walk through of that game.
How? It's supposed to be build on engine which will be available for developers NEXT YEAR.

edit:
Found that trailer. I fell like that was trailer they planned to show at begining, but then decided to show more gameplay and had only that old build. That looks much better than long one. Even contrast is correct.

Horizon didn't show a second of gameplay.

Done.

Jim Ryan stated eveyrhing that was going to be shown back in June was running on a PS5.

From what Guerilla Games can bring nobody needs to worry about that, they'll deliver in the visuals like they always have with their games.

MS on the other hand have been playing a dangerous game, people have been using Hellblade 2 as a benchmark for next gen graphics, yet they don't even have anything to show since December 2019.

That Hellblade trailer was nothing but CG, anything MS say at this point should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Yeah Gears 5 campaign was good and the multiplayer rubbish. Horizon? Hands down the only racing game I enjoy. But as you said, where are the games that challenges games such as God of War, Horizon...etc?

Thats where MS lacks and it seems to me that they haven't learned

Can you link the 1 minute trailer?

I've always enjoyed Xbox consoles and I have always believed their engineers are top notch - BUT - I have always tried to ignore their management teams. To me they have always come across as disingenuous and annoying.
Look at my post history, I've always stayed quiet about this. Lots of Xbox owners rave non stop about how wonderful Phil has been for the brand and how he has righted the ship. I've always felt the dude is just another mouth piece saying what Xbox owners want to hear.
He generally says one thing while actually doing quite the opposite.
Well after listening to him build up today's show and witnessing all of Greenberg's back handed remarks I just knew they were digging themselves into yet another hole that they would have to unnecessarily dig themselves out of again.
I enjoyed the show and I am looking forward to a good handful of games that should be releasing with the console but seriously can the management fools finally just shut the fuck up and stop over embellishing things.
There is so much good that the Xbox has to offer and seriously it can easily stand on its own two feet at this point. Yet every time one of the idiots open their mouths they push the brand back another step.
Why can't they just focus on their brand and it's offerings in a non hyperbolic way and deliver a clear message instead of constantly trying to hit it out of the park.
Just hitting it over the fence will do just fine. Fuck, sorry for the ranting here people but I'm just sick and tired of these tools and I hope people will start to see Phil for the phony he really is.
Damn man, just deliver a realistic message, back it up with a realistic console (which they certainly have) and stop treating people like idiots.
Now I'm just waiting for someone on the management team to apologize like they did for the last show, but just go right ahead and start blowing the next event out of proportion. Rinse and repeat. They must think people have the memory of a fly.

The PS5 can run cutscenes and cinematics. Doesn't mean a damn thing. HZFW clearly wasn't gameplay. Don't care if they can deliver or not. It straight up wasn't.

And of course Hellblade 2 will look nothing like the trailer lol.

How? It was shown, In-Engine, and people were holding it up as RealTime and best graphics of the Generation already. So, I was looking forward to it. The full version of UE5 is suppose to be released next year, but UE4 is getting updates soon that, or already have, that gets it closer to UE5. At least that's what EPIC has outlined in their roadmap.

I think the smartest thing Sony did with the PS4 (and they are repeating that again with the PS5) is getting a FROM Software exclusive on your console roughly around the launch window period.

Let's put it this way. I'm someone that always buys both consoles. For reasons I can't avoid, for now, I have to choose one first. I waited for this showcase to help me decide which way to go. It did. I will get XSX later. Not that there weren't things there that looked fun to play, but I didn't see enough to make me want an XBOX first.

I didn't see much to back up that smack talk either. If you have a beast of a system in people's mind, and you talk smack, either deliver or spend time making up for it at best post launch.

And then in five years we are going to hear "We heard you, the player, and we get it now!"

Lmao. Don't be naive.

i'd agree with what you said OP. halo definitely needs more time, i wasn't impressed when i saw it live during the show but thought i'd check the 4k youtube video afterwards and still didn't feel a wow effect. i did see some games that i was interested in mainly avowed, stalker 2 and the medium.

problem with xbox is they just seem to hype stuff way to much and then never deliver. i'll still get the series x because i have gamepass until 2023 so may as well use it but yeah show wasn't great and even i kept my expectations low.
