How does the party work in the preview? If I opt in for the preview can I still party chat with my friends who are not? Or can you just party with people in the preview?

They tell you right in the sign up that you will not even be able to see party requests from people not up to date. So no, you lose access to all friends not in the preview. Anyone who beta tested some of the 360 dash knows what this isolation is like.

Turned my xbox one on this morning and no update, go upstairs and come back down and it's showing an orange light on the power brick so turned it on and it updated.

Set the audio to optical out bit stream out then dolby digital so looking forward to testing it out tonight.
