Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Just some math

We are currently at 202 BC games.

According to Wikipedia there are 1173 retail games + 715 arcade games = 1888 games (I believe Kinect-only games are already excluded from this list)

So 10,7% of those are available as BC right now.

In the last 3 months we got an average of 17,3 games / month

=> If they continue this pace it will take a little over 8 years for all Xbox 360 games to become BC :-)
Lots of those are sports games and licensed games that will never come

Will never happen due to publishers or licenses though.

Exactly. Many games like Afterburner Climax or all the Marvel fighting games, etc. will never make it to BC, sadly. As a result I will have a 360 forever. So while X1 BC is convenient and appreciated, thanks to these issues it will never allow me to say goodbye to the 360.

How many of these are XBLIG? Any?

I still don't get why publishers would be against this, if they are not created "HD remasters" of games. It's free money.

Maybe they would rather people buy their new games as opposed to playing their old ones. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1&2 was just announced for PS4/XB1. Maybe publishers would like to keep the door open for remasters, even if they aren't currently pursuing them. Maybe they want to hold on to them as pre-order incentives for a game that may or may not ever happen.

I can think of lots of reasons. Publishers allowing the game to be BC is mostly an act of goodwill. It's not really a good business move unless they have absolutely no plans to ever re-release or make a sequel. The users that don't already own the old game and would buy it as a result of BC is probably pretty small, and even then they are buying it at cheap, low-margin prices.

Still doesn't make sense. Then make it BC and sell it for whatever they see fit. Gives them a whole new system and a group of people who might buy it and cost them nothing.

I've never seen the original in testing, just 2 and case zero/west.

They are dumb not to consider it. I think a lot of people have forgotten about what a great game the first one was and haven't played it in years. It's also a full-on 360 exclusive so unless you still have one hooked up you didn't even have the chance to play it lately.

Just needs to happen for the DR4 release.

I disagree. Look at CODBlops1. Instant influx of sales. No effort. Also Castle Crashers is BC and they also put at an X1 version. Same with Limbo. And some others.

I'm simply giving you some valid reasons why companies might choose to not allow BC. I did not say they couldn't or shouldn't allow it. Some of them are less focused on maximizing every sales opportunity than others. Behemoth is the type of studio that enjoys getting goodwill from the gaming community, so they chose accordingly.

Yeah some studios just HATE when consumers like them.

;)

Yeah, all you have to do is look at how Steam and even GOG have been successful at selling digital copies of older games and many publishers have taken advantage. I don't see BC being much different.

On a somewhat related/unrelated note...

I hate to admit it but for consoles I was always considered owning physical copies of games as a must. Somehow the concept of BC on Xbox One has changed my mindset. I just want to have a massive library of digital games on my console now.

If the console makers really want to push an all digital marketplace providing high discounts on older games, and making them playable on the newest console is a great way to start the conversion process. My big concern with digital on consoles was lack of support for games as they get older. That might still be a valid concern, we'll have to see what MS does on future consoles (beyond Scorpio, which is still a ways off itself)

The only game I don't have a digital copy of on my Xbox One now is Halo 5. Xbox converted me, and it was through BC.

Apparently Symphony of the Nights splash image changed?

It was the Castlevania title card from the post Richter intro crawl but now its a picture of Alucard from the Japanese box art.

I think a few 360 splash images changed, actually. I was going through my 360 games to force any remaining updates that hadn't been auto-downloaded, and a few of them seemed really unfamiliar/different.

Heads up for anyone else thinking about uncrossing their fingers and just getting another 360, Gamestop has the 4GB E in stock new for $109. They're also doing a 50% bonus trade in through the 26th. I traded in a handful of games I'm not playing anymore and ended up only coming $35 out of pocket. I'll just pop my 128GB flash drive in the back and roll with that.

I think it would be nice if MS would be a little more transparent. If they know for sure about certain titles which will never be made BC, just tell us. We don't need to know the exact reasons, just a list and "Currently the following Xbox 360 titles will not be made available in the Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Program." That way people can temper their expectations, decide on whether or not to hang on to their 360s, or buy another one like my dumb ass just did.

BTW, considering my luck and history of immediate regret in regards to buying electronics, now that I've bought this 360 expect every single 360 title to be made BC all at once sometime next week. You're welcome in advance.

That reminds me; I'm surprised that the splash image for Super Meat Boy hasn't changed at all. It's just a red screen, with the red being the same shade as Meat Boy.

Playing Portal: Still Alive and don't remember the performance being this bad on 360 (Orange Box, though I doubt there's a diff). I actually hope it's the emulation and not me just being spoiled by current gen games. What's the early word on Portal 2's performance?

Yeah, I was playing that a few months ago I think and it was so bad I was getting headaches at parts.

Was just wondering, anybody have the Stick of Truth BC? Thinking about picking it up, not sure it has any major performance issues/problems.

Plays perfectly for me so far. Such a great game, surprised at how good it is actually. Underneath all the toilet humor is a fantastic RPG.

Yeah, only complaint with Stick of Truth is the combat is a bit too basic. Looks like Fractured But Whole may have fixed that.

Welcome brother to our dark brotherhood

The moment I connected a 4tb drive I knew I wanted everything digital forever

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I've heard it's quite a surprisingly good game. Want to get into it before the Fractured But Whole

It's really good, especially if you love South Park. As above the combat is pretty basic but the game is perfectly paced.

Can't speak for the performance on BC though. I'm actually hoping the XBO (remaster?) has decent performance because I plan on getting TFBH and it's been a while since my SoT play through that im due for another .

I bought SoT last week or the week before when it was on sale for $10 and it runs great on BC imo. I recall that the slow loading menu system was my biggest gripe when I played it on my PS3 last gen and I believe it loads faster now but it might just be my poor memory too.

Either way it plays well enough that I am enjoying it. The journey of Sir Douchebag continues...

Yep - one of the few games that I have completed and just by paying attention and having a go at everything i got myself very close to most of the achievements. My only gripe was not realising near the end that you cannot get back out into the world to get some of the achievements, so I had to load a slightly earlier save and re-do.

I autosaved a lot and also manually saved quite a bit so I had options in case i did miss any achievements.

To me the button timing felt off, or certainly very very tight, but I could hit anticipate the timing a lot of the time. After the first third or so I had got a lot of "extra" weapons etc so i was always fairly easily levelled for combat.

Some fun game mechanics with an excellent South Park skin over the top.

Ah, there it is.
There's that feeling I've become so accustomed to dealing with...

[1] see thread bumped
[2] get excited, hoping that new titles - titles I will actually PLAY - just got announced for BC
[3] check thread
[4] feel crushing disappointment in realizing it is just performance talk for past BC-announced games.

Has anyone tried Portal 2? I'm thinking about picking it up again if it runs well.

The framerate can get a little chunky in a few spots, but the game runs pretty well and is perfectly playable. It's a fairly slow paced puzzle game anyway, so the odd bit of slowdown doesn't effect the experience too much.

I have a question:

I have Gears 1 and 2 for 360, on disc. And I am German so yeah, I ordered the games from amazon UK. The games play fine, of course. But will they also work on XBO? It has to download the games so I don't know if it will stop to work then.
Also, is there *any* possibility that I can buy the games digitally on XBO? Can I switch to an austrian account? Or is there no way that as a German you can buy Gears digitally?

Anyone had issues with X-Com? Played a couple of hours yesterday, went to load my save game and it has vanished

I havnt noticed anything but now that i think about it the game may not be autosaving, im pretty sure everytime ive ended a playthrough ive manually saved multiple times just to make sure i remember which save state is the most recent but thinking about it makes me realize i havnt noticed any auto save states just my manual ones. Side note, ive also noticed that recording is disabled in xcom, not sure if its for everybody or im nust experiencing a unique issue but each time i play and try to record the xbox says "record is disabled in the game/application" or something like that. Is there other games this happens with? And can anybody else confirm this happens for them aswell?
