Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Surprised this wasn't mentioned at E3

Yeah I expected some BC news but we didn't even get numbers or anything.

EIther way 100M hours sounds a massive number in ~6 months, considering there's only a few of the most popular games... do have to wonder how many of those hours came from GWG's but I don't think that should retract from it either way (I think it's a good thing and is actually one of the main reasons I'm a big fan of BC)

Dat numbers. So glad Microsoft sees BC is a major feature that gamers actually uses. 100M hours isn't something to laugh at. Wish PS4 has that feature because I want to play some PS1 and PS2 games on it. Guess Sony doesn't care, let alone PS2 HD games aren't coming quick enough.

I would have been more inclined to buy the Xbox One before my PS4 had it been BC out of the box. I was primarily a 360 user before this gen so I had a lot more games than I had for my PS3. There are other reasons I chose PS4 first, but having BC from the get go would have made my decision a lot harder. Even though I have owned my PS4 for about a year longer than my Xbone I already have way more games on my Xbone due to BC.

I just hope going forward in future gens that BC is a given and not an afterthought.

Yeah, I'm hoping with Sony and Microsoft moving to incremental hardware releases, as well as the move to x86 this gen, means future generations being backwards compatible.

I was mostly a PS3 gamer last gen, and let me tell you going back to that console to play some of my games is not fun at all. Xbox One BC is great because the games I had for 360, or the games I double dipped on all work really well with the XB1 interface. I'm still in the modern console ecosystem. I never want to go back to using old consoles if I don't have to.

I believe Microsoft has confirmed 360 BC will head to Scorpio too. Hopefully original Xbox games BC will happen later in the future since Phil mentioned he would love to see it one day.

strange...

Edit: OH! The collection for the SoR games doesn't work for me anymore. Streets of Rage 2 has replaced it. That sucks because the only game I like playing is the first one.

Thank you for pointing this out. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why my ready to install list dropped from 140 to 139. The original version of SoR2 installing itself and replacing the collection is exactly what caused it.

German website xboxfront.de reports that Gears of War 4 will include all 4 previous backwards compatible Gears games. Old news?

They should do a "The Marcus Fenix Collection".

Yeah old news. Same promotion they did last year, all BC digital titles if you buy before December 31st

Also weekly here's my weekly request for Dead Rising

Sounds like they're just doing the Gears UE promo again. It's basically a stealth Collection.

Streets of Rage Collection is back. I tried to launch Street of Rage 2 and it prompted an update. I guess someone got confused and updated the wrong version of the game. But fixed quickly, good job.

Huh, another new emulator build popped up. Soul Calibur II HD is running on 1.0.1606.42318. That's the third build in the past few weeks. And more and more games keep getting updated to 1.0.1606.40419. I got three today (Lego Star Was: The Complete Saga, Rainbow Six Vegas, and Just Cause 2).

Wonder if the Gears games will get bumped to the new version soon. No updates for those since early January, making them the least recently updated of my 47 Xbox 360 games. Reach hasn't been updated in the same amount of time, but the Gears games are all running on an even older emulator version (the oldest of all my installed games).

I hope if they ever stop updating/improving the emulator someday they make sure all the games have the latest/final version.

Gears and Reach are probably taking the longest to be updated because of their complexity, size, and importance. I imagine they're all getting some pretty intensive testing before getting bumped to the next version, to make sure no severe bugs are introduced. That said, considering how many games are getting bumped to 1.0.1606.40419 (or newer), I have a feeling they're hoping to get everything running on that build as the new minimum supported version.

As an aside, I wonder if MS is planning to update the emulator with some bonus goodies for Scorpio, like forcing a higher rendering resolution. I doubt it, but it would be interesting.

How ironic that a German website is reporting that because this won't be available for Germans.

Are they just updating games with issues ?

Or are they genereally updating every game to the lated emulator version?

you have committed a crime and will be arrested

But officer! It's the one I grew up with!

also... It's the only game in the series that has good music, in my opinion.

Just sent a tweet out, if anyone wanted to do anything similar, and contributed to the existing thread about the issue on the preview forums.

@majornelson @XboxQwik @XboxP3 Why has SVC Streets of Rage collection on BC been overwritten with vanilla SoR2? Different conversion/dev!

I wrote a lengthy "report a problem" thingy about it.
edit: well, two reports. First one about being able to play the game when I didn't actually own it, and the second lengthy one about the strange game swappin' dance.

I'd like to thank Xbox One BC for letting me experience Halo Wars.

Finished it yesterday and enjoyed it completely. I'm ready for HW2 (campaign) now.

Cool you liked it! I was sceptical to it back in the day, but picked it up cheap and really enjoyed it on the 360. A friend helped me out coop too, which was even more fun.

I initially thought RTS games weren't up to much on consoles, but I liked the Command & Conquer like gameplay and all the recognisable units from the Halo universe.

While I'm happy they are adding new titles, has anyone heard of these titles before? I follow gaming pretty closely and they seem to add titles even I haven't heard a hint of.

Bioshock Remaster trailer, explains why BC didn't happen: http://youtu.be/-UaeVy-tutU

Shows why publishers in general are cunts.

Microsoft needs to dramatically change the way BC works, such that they don't require any permission from publishers to make a game BC. The current implementation is quite elegant but requires goodwill from publishers, of which there is virtually fuck-all.

Microsoft has tried to lead by example and show that you can sell a remaster AND still make a game BC (Gears of War 1). But too many publishers seem to be holding back... =/

They probably can't do that until they figure out how to natively launch the game from disc instead of having to download the whole emulated game. I would love for that to happen though so that MS can get passed the publishers.

Bloodforge was a Summer of Arcade title in 12 or 13. It wasn't great. Got patched, and now it's very good. God of War-esque.
