Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

That's not happening.
In the realm of large scale top secret domestic surveillance, I'm going to have to give the intelligence services more pull than a Microsoft PR statement.

And its fucking crazy that MS was signed up for the program first, and so long ago. That makes them part of the domestic surveillance apparatus, with a required internet connected camera with facial recognition perfectly framed and positioned at your living room comfy couch.

Yeah... no.

Exactly. The 24-hour check thing defies explanation.
Everybody wants you online. Every vested interest in this platform wants it. DRM is only part of it.

They think casuals will buy it for tv tv tv, sports sports sports, and that "hardcore guys will buy anything."

Or maybe there is a percentage of gamers that doesn't give a shit, because they buy games legit for themselves and keep them, always connected to XBL. No worry of sharing. No worry for always on.

Disks should be able to be played without installing, they wouldn't need to check them then. Installing games should of made the online checks activate. That way physical releases allow offline play etc.

This nonsense is crazy, the media should be blasting them a lot harder.

Microsoft has to know something that we don't. Otherwise they'd just be handing this generation over to Sony. It's just not adding up to me.

You mean corporate espionage right? I'm sure both Sony and MS have been going at it hardcore, but Sony has so far proven that they're more savvy in secret-keeping than MS. Time will tell though.

That's not happening.

I wouldnt trust MS on this at all. They were more than happy to be the first company to jump on board.

A;so, notice that not only was MS the first to jump on board, but they have been collecting Skype data as well.

Hahahaa what a load of BS from Microsoft. Regarding this:

"If the publisher enables it, you can trade-in disc-based games at participating retailers for cash and credit."

So it means that basically the whole Asia is fucked? Asia doesn't have any big game shops (count HMV out as their prices of games (and basically other stuffs) are ridiculous) like GameStop, Best Buy or Target that constantly sell updated and new video games. So Microsoft bailing out of Japan confirmed? As the 2nd hand game market in Japan is really huge.

And regarding this:

"If the publisher enables it, you’ll be able to give your games to friends. However, you can only give them to people who have been on your Xbox LIVE friends list for at least 30 days, and it can only be given once."

So I have to choose one friend that is worthy enough to give/lend my game to? Dafuq is this BS? And if my friend just gotten a Xbox One and I want to give him a game but he's new to Xbox live and is not on my friend list for 30 days I can't give it to him? This is just so stupid!

They think casuals will buy it for tv tv tv, sports sports sports, and that "hardcore guys will buy anything."

While I believe this is partly true they have to be aware that the online checks, killing of used games/trading & other draconian DRM will make this an undesirable system. So unless they've gone mad with arrogance I find it hard to believe that they would go this far without some inside knowledge, of either Sony doing something similar or them (MS) getting exclusives for pulling this kind of shit.

There's a big difference between tapping into data from servers (which is what PRISM is doing) and Microsoft uploading data from the Xbox when they explicitly say it doesn't leave the console (which is what you're implying).

I finished Zombi U and sold it to a mate for £20. I used that money to buy NSMBU brand new on Amazon. I then traded that in at CEX for cash and used that money to buy some eshop games on the 3DS.

with the Xbone, none of that would have been possible. I'm absolutely amazed by how fucked it all is.

there is no reason why you cant lend it to your mate for 30 days.. Once hes done with it take the game back to the shop and take cash or trade for NSMBU then do the same again once you've done what you want with NSMBU.. As in take it back, get cash or an e-card thing and get your e-shop games.

i see no problem what so ever with that.

I see plenty of problems. The most potent of them being the complete raping of my consumer rights and freedoms.

Will I wake up and find that this nightmare is over? Like Hans in Das Boot? Or will I wake up and still be pissed off as shit at this hot mess. If Sony pulls this same shot I'm gonna drop console gaming like it's hot.

Demonstrably where?

Right above you.
PRISM. They're not telling you that data can be pulled from the console just like they didn't tell you when they signed up in 2007.
Also, there's a big 'Hack Me' sign on this console, the biggest ever.

I used to spend a month every summer at the cottage (no internet connection). It was fun gaming at night after all of the outdoorsy stuff. That would be impossible to do with the Xbox One. I can't even play a game without internet. That and their policy for lending out games is ridiculous.

How exactly does this DRM help publishers at all? Gamestop still exists in this equation, the same people they were rallying against. All Microsoft did was make them more important than they were previously...

If Microsoft was uploading data from the Kinect to an intelligence agency, I'm pretty sure they would be required by law not to disclose that fact.

But I'd also imagine that it would be detectable, but I'd assume that the xbox will have periodic encrypted traffic moving between the console and Live pretty often, so maybe not so simple.

This too. If the connection exists its exploitable.

If someone decides to DDOS the Microsoft check-in servers, does that mean that within 24 hours nobody is able to play games anymore? Even singleplayer games?

The way they try to portray everything on the website as a positive feature is just pathetic.

Will never buy, and I can assure anyone that with these restrictions, no one in South America will either. It's a very "first world"-centric design.

Publishers get a cut of every used games sale, which is what they've always been after.

Except there is only on transfer :)

If they ran it over a 25 hour period, then that would be a big 10-4. All games, doesn't matter if it's Single Player only or Multiplayer. Just think Sim City or D3.....

Ignoring the implications for a second.

Does anyone genuinely not have there PS3/Xbox 360 not connected to the internet? I'm genuinely curious.

I ran a blockbuster in the UK for five years until last year. A staggering amount of gaming customers did not have internet access. Most of them lower income.

guess they aren't allowed consoles now in the next generation. Ah well.

I've read that several dorms block internet connections for game consoles. I know I had that problem when bringing my 360 to a motel. It shouldn't be that way. What about kids "staying at grandma's for the weekend" who want to bring their console with them, or those in the military? There's lots of scenarios which would disconnect you from the internet for a period of time.

What are the chances that next holiday season Xbox One.Five comes out as a "bare bones" version that doesn't let you you install games but also has none of the DRM?

Pretty good I'd say.

For a while i didn't as my Wifi went out and I was too cheap to get a new router. it must have been a month or 2. However currently I am renting a modem/router.

Despite all this I cannot support the new box based on the mandatory connection, drm, whatever. it wouldn't actually affect me but on a moral stance I cannot support it

Like I said, allowing access to servers != intentionally uploading data to servers after you say it doesn't leave the console.

You're very trusting. Especially right after finding out they were hiding this from you.

My 360 is connected, but it doesn't need to be. I don't do anything online. I don't play multiplayer. I don't watch movies. I don't buy content. I don't buy outfits for my stupid avatar. I rarely download demos, particularly since it seems they want to screw up the navigation every 6 months or whatever. In fact, I have half a mind to kick my 360 off my wifi network entirely.

Here's the problem with that, though. I'd have to turn it on. Haven't done that in a while.
