Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Honestly the only reason the no used game thing bothers me is because how future proof is this system? In 10 years when there's a new system out will I still be able to play my old games? Also will these games always be available digitally? I love playing old games from time to time and not being able to do this seems tragic. I guess emulators?
They'll make you pay for hd/4k re re re releases. Bc is dead. Publishers are now going for maximized profits and that basically means you are just borrowing games for 60$ for a few years.

NeoGaf is still a minority in the large scheme of things.

One of the most vocal and knowledgeable minorities, but a minority.

The X1 will sell to the casuals in great numbers in the US and UK, especially if there is a subsidized price plan. And the publishers probably know that, even with this pro-publisher DRM solution. And it is something they want enough that Sony not playing ball in some way (note NOT the SAME way) could lead to seeing the X1 had numerous exclusives, timed or real, extra support, etc... just so the publishers can promote sales on the platform they prefer.

Like it or not, it is a pretty easy business choice when you look at the numbers.

I tend to not buy into theories that require a tinfoil hat to seem plausible.

ms is taking the advantage of idiots and i like it. Good step indeed for business.

no patcher and someone like you could think this

patcher is wrong and you with him

in the long run ...ms will fail with this console...no doubt about it

customers are not this idiots..and theres no way to choose xbox one and not ps4 this time around...

3rd party games saved the xbox 360

this time console power is only up on ps4
and with all this restriction...well theres no choice..

xbox is drawing a big fail road

I still want one. these policies do not effect me in the slightest. I don't sell games, xbox is always online for me so it's fine for me.

day 1 for this and the ps4 as well. I'm in it for the games, not the politics.

What games? What games that are not coming for the PC? I can't think of anything. Titan Fall, Destiny... PC.

Literally the only time I used my consoles was when I rented games before buying them or if they were console exclusives (rented for single player). I have no interest in a closed system "version" of Steam.

You know what's cool about Steam? I can use a free VPN and unlock games early if they're out in Europe first. Done that three times in the last four months alone. It's real nice. I also have "backwards compatibility." I can play whatever the fuck I want, wherever the shit I want. Xbox One: can I play my old Arcade games? No. Can I play my 360 games? No. Can I rent a game? No. Can I borrow a game? Fuck no. Can I... no.

I urge you to reconsider giving your money to companies that want to fuck you over.

So, our worst case scenario with these modifications:

+ No MS fee to participating retailers (but probably a publisher fee?) so used games price increase might not be as much...
- ...but publishers can disable even trading at participating retailers.

+ "Family" (would like to know the restrictions here) sharing to up to 10 users...
- ...but when gaming on a different console with your profile, the online check is not every 24h but every 1h

+ Friend trading!
- ...but only if a friend for more that a month (so basically no private trading anyway) and only once (the receiving friend is stuck with the game)

So instead of just crap, the system was crap with a cherry on top.

this is not a defense of microsoft but rather a criticism of a ridiculous argument

if your internet is regularly out for 24+ hour increments, then you have far larger problems than not being able to play your xbox in this hyper-connected day and age

a broadband connection is practically mandatory in the 21st century.

Let me shoot you a scenario.

The Xbone just checked your system 23 hours and 50 minutes ago.

Your internet just went out. In 10 minutes you have to have your system checked.

Is this not a real scenario? Doesnt have to be out for 24+ hours. Just has to be out enough that the Xbox cant check.

Correct?

after this the ONLY reason to buy an xbox one would be if the OS of the ps4 is a total bullshit and dosnt have any of the thigns of the xbone

but this will never happen

MS as a big xbox brand supporter....im saying ...you have failed hard this time

Exclusives and if Kinect and the media interface is a draw to you. I can see a decent number of people picking it up for that reason.

I'm confused why some gamers say it isn't as bad as expected, because it's actually worse than we have heard since Mai.

ms is taking the advantage of idiots and i like it. Good step indeed for business.

I wonder how many uninformed parents will be surprised.

Pc only where drm alreadyrules?

Who gives a shit? In case you didn't notice we aren't talking about PC games. Right now, as in this very second we have these rights. Rights we have had for a long fucking time now and they are being removed. Why is anyone supposed to care if PC's game do it. The people in this thread play console games (maybe not exclusively, but who cares) and that's what's being fucked. I play pc games too and I get it works that way on that end. Why the hell would I want console games to be the same way if they aren't now.

I mention again, we aren't talking about how things used to be, not yet. Right NOW we can do these things with our console games. It's really stupid that we keep being told we aren't supposed to care.

They'll make you pay for hd/4k re re re releases. Bc is dead. Publishers are now going for maximized profits and that basically means you are just borrowing games for 60$ for a few years.

I'm not even talking about backwards compatibility. If the system needs to check whether I own the game ever 24 hours... then what if they stop supporting that and I can't play my games. See my point?

Some thoughts....

1. Will games cost much more to download to buy physically like it is now? (Games on PS Store cost like £50, which you can purchase for £40 or less from zavvi or whatever).

2. My country does not have access to Xbox Live, will I still be able to buy games from the cloud? Or I'm getting the middle finger?

3. They say that up to 10 members of the family can play the same game. Can these be on different consoles, concurrently and from different IPs?

I don't know how many other people have said it but...

...in my 32 years of Gaming, this is some of the craziest shit I've ever heard.

This is a very niche corner case. Let's not pretend it's common or a prominent use case. I don't doubt some people do it, and it certainly sucks for them, but I don't think that angle is of high concern.
Yeah sorry, I didn't mean to say it should. My point is, here's the reason why I won't buy one and I don't like the dismissive attitude of people here that are basically telling us to "deal with it" and "stfu". I am very disappointed to not buy one, and I'm worried about my console gamer future. If Sony pushes something similar, and it looks like they may, I'll be done with 28 amazing years of couch gaming. And it breaks my heart. Maybe I'm just too old and the kids will love it, what do I know ?

I care about using it today, but also tomorrow. Nobody ever buys a product like this for using it just for today.

True in that sense. But I don't care about games beyond a couple years into a new generation as I've never kept my old consoles. I finish up what I want to play on them, and then sell/trade them in toward next gen hardware.

I just have little interest in replaying games. It obviously sucks for those who do, but is moot for people like me.

The limited resell options are the only part that really pissees me off.

I am concerned about the future prospects of my potential investments on the Xbox One as a platform.
I put in money today, just to have their policy revised and the servers being switched off sometime in the future.

And given the money mongering attitude of guys such as EA, God only knows what they will up to.

I am out as a consumer from the MS ecosystem. If Sony does it , out from there as well.

Considering, EA shut servers of their games every few years, what happens in 2018 when you feel like playing Fifa 2014? Will it work, if the authenticating server detects the online multiplayer server is shut down?

Exclusives and if Kinect and the media interface is a draw to you. I can see a decent number of people picking it up for that reason.

every xbox user inside of him (im the first) know that sony ps had, have and will have more exclusives

we kept defending ms hoping they would adjust their route....but no...they didnt listen didnt understand...

also if the new kinect 2 look good enough isnt anymore that "WOW ITS SOMETHING NEW" that excited millions of users...and ps4 is going to sell a dual camera too

media interface? here in italy i still use the xbox 360 just for 2 apps (that soon will be also on my ps3)

in the most of the world ppl are not excited about football games and nfl partership ( in europe we watch soccer )..espn and other shit that we dont watch and dont want
in most countries of the world...netflix dosnt work ...and where it works..the most used device was the ps3...

i dont know what kind of partnership xbox one will have...but i really dont see and cant imagine they have somethign that could be a "game changer"

honestly ...xbox one failed hard

I'm not even talking about backwards compatibility. If the system needs to check whether I own the game ever 24 hours... then what if they stop supporting that and I can't play my games. See my point?
Oh I definitely do.

Technically it's not your game. You buy a license already on current systems. All you own is the plastic case, manual and disc but not the content on the disc.

So what I would imagine would happen is pretty much nothing as I expect some ridiculous Terms you will have to agree to play games, which will allow MS to take away more of your rights. So when the check-in service stops, so will your license. Welcome to next gen gaming...

They say that up to 10 members of the family can play the same game. Did they say if members can play from different consoles with a different login, concurrently and from different IPs?

Nice. Lots of restrictions, hoops and bullshit to wade through just so people can actually play the £40 games they pay for. Just what we all want. No thanks MS, and a big middle finger to you and anyone else who adopts such measures.

What in the fuck? I stop paying attention to games for a few months because of work and school, and I come back and see that "Xbox One: Spread the Word" thread. Nah this can't be real life. Not cool.

Fuck buying games from Xbox Live. Good luck buying games from your local store.

I already missed a lot of games because they were available only online for purchasing. Or you buy a game from a retail store, and it comes with DLC which you cannot use (which you have PAID for without having any other option).

Kayle, you have seen the light :)
I asked you the same thing on N4G a few months ago.

Thank you Microsoft for finally spelling out your policies at last.

Well that's the xBone crossed off the shopping list for good.

Your move Sony...

It's unrealistic to Sony the ps4 will run just like the ps3...no chance.
Then, what's the best we can hope for? Some other kind of similar DRM that instead doesn't have the online requirement? Is that the best we can do now? I really don't want to skip getting a ps4 but I don't feel like I can support that. IF this is the way things are now and I want there to be a negative repercussion to the industry. If I don't assist that and I would just feel guilty for owning one. Fuck, I really don't know what I would do.

So if Sony pulls similar, you'll buy neither console? really?

I can't see it to be honest. A game will come out that sets the gaming world on fire and most of us won't be able to resist. The bullshit they are pulling will become less and less important to all of us rapidly degrading everytime a 'last of us' is released and scores 10s across the board.

This is the new normal. What is really terrible is they just could have avoided this by allowing you to play from disc and only from disc if they wanted. Just push digital sales and they would have what they wanted.

We still have the PC.

Well someone needs to forward the memo that people aren't going to pay $60 for games that you can't trade in.

Fuck yeah, man. Fight the power and the man. Oh, oh, I, wait what is this: www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=462068

Microsoft had no problem with taking down the Xbox Live servers for the original Xbox once the 360 had been out for a few years. It might be longer for the Xbox One since the servers are required for even single-player games to function, but my guess is at some point MS will decide that the money spent maintaining the servers isn't it worth it to support 10 or 20 year old games.

not sure if anyone on GAF really follows Blunty but it seems he's taken the same path as Total Biscuit

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et8X0H6JslY

new video he just put up where he pretty much sides with Microsoft and insults those who disagree with him

what is with some these bigger name (sorta?) youtube gaming personalities siding with Microsoft on this crap?

Kayle, you have seen the light :)
I asked you the same thing on N4G a few months ago.

as i said at ms should fire EVERYONE who worked on this new console (most of the managers at least)

they fucked up everything
sony was struggling and with their big financial problem they should hit hard the market witha serious rival
not this ridiculous piece of hardware (and im being good)

i really dont see any reason for this move that ms did its just crazy
restrictions on restricions
cheap and poor performance compared to the direct rival
great pr bullshit like the infinte power of the cloud
useless technology "oooh look how much fast the xbox one switch between tv-games-bluray..wow"
xbox live continue to be a paywall
for the most of the world countries useless partnerships (espn, nfl etc etc)

patcher can continue to talk good about ms .....he is wrong like he been many times and soon ms will realize that ppl r not this idiots

and im talking like a ms xbox user (and fan) ..as u know already

this is not a defense of microsoft but rather a criticism of a ridiculous argument

if your internet is regularly out for 24+ hour increments, then you have far larger problems than not being able to play your xbox in this hyper-connected day and age

a broadband connection is practically mandatory in the 21st century.

While I don't personally subscribe to that argument, my problem with the 24 hour check in is that I have to ping the server to allow me to play a game. I'm always online (the longest I've gone without a persistent connection is 7 days in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy when I didn't have power). So there will be very few times where I will not be able to play a game. But, forcing me to check in with a server to play a game that I physically own is outrageous to me. It is intrusive and rips the relationship a consumer has with his/her product in two. So this is where the hypothetical comes in. If my internet were to go down for over 24 hours, I can no longer play a game I bought with my money and that I can physically hold, taste, smell...whatever. I have no rights to play that game unless a server tells me I can play it. That sort of restriction on a physical and yes, even digital game is not where I want this industry to go.

Keeps getting them the free games so it doesn't bother them I bet.

*wakes up* What did I miss?

So much for "potential scenarios", "we ARE listening" and every gaming podcast that game them the benefit of the doubt. "They have 6 months to clarify", they said. Well, here we are motherfuckers; can't hide now.

No renting or loaning, private sale only if that person has been on your friend list for 30 days (and it's stuck with them?), 24 hour checks, the very real possibility of this console not working in 10 years' time when they shut down the servers... In some ways the news is even worse than we imagined. You can play for one hour at a friend's house? What. Used game sales only at participating retailers and only if the publisher allows it? I love how all of this is to fight the new publisher boogeyman in used games (I'm sure they're going to allow used games), as if used games are at fault for morons pumping $100 million into Tomb Raider. "Hitman: Absolution only sold 2 million copies, why?!" Because it's shit, that's why.

It is blindingly obvious that none of these, uh, "features", transfer any benefit to the consumer; if they did Microsoft would not cancel roundtables, one-on-one interviews and spend months avoiding questions. They're releasing it now so at their E3 conference with millions of people watching, including the mainstream press, they can show shiny games and the mind share of the non-hardcore then becomes "this thing is the one item in my living room AND it plays awesome games! Amazing!" If they mentioned any of this draconian bullshit on stage they'd be torn to shreds.

So we're left with an underpowered, always online, region-locked, backwards-incompatible console that severely restricts how, when and where we can both play and sell games that provides absolutely none of the benefits of such an infrastructure (infinite backwards compatibility, lower prices, etc.). But it can control live TV and provides great TV features, except it doesn't if you're one of the 6.6 billion people not blessed enough to live in North America.

"We ARE listening." Good. They can hear us all say "fuck you". This whole thing is vile. The console is vile. Their treatment of consumers is vile. Even their response to the press is vile. For the good of the industry this console has to fail. I truly hope it does.

Oh I definitely do.

Yeah that's bull.

I have had a time where we had three days worth of storms in my area where we had no tv or internet. I live in America and rural area.

LOL. So yeah. Also several people have said no internet for long periods when moving, soldiers, and then random internet crash from the two major companies in the US.

Correct?

I wonder if you can instruct the Xbox to make the check at a specific time, say 4AM. So the case you've stated above would be fixed.

So what happened to "We are listening"?

Because about nothing changed, we still need to connect to the internet every 24h. I still can't lend my games with my friends. I still can't buy second-hand games from my local gamestore, were I also can't trade them in.

The only good thing is that Microsoft themselves aren't charging a fee for used-games but the problem is is that the publishers will charge it when they're given the chance.

So in the end we are back at square one, only this time we know the lay-out of the board.

Only just got into work and seen this so apologies if i repeat whats already been said. Anyone really concearned when it says
'Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. '

Give the publishers a choice and i doubt any games will be resellable. :(. Don't let us down Sony!

Top Bottom
