Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

I don't get it, isn't Gamestop etc the main reason they're limiting used games sales? Because they promote used games more than new games etc? These are the ones who keep being portrayed as evil in threads justifying this, not the small stores.

So solution to this is to ONLY allow Gamestop etc to sell used games, and not the small stores?

Wut?

No, your fellow gaffers are the real evil:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=506332

They don't even promote new games, unlike gamestop!

I really think calling the consumers 'entitled' is disgusting and a pathetic substitute for an intelligent argument. The consumers are just that, consumers. This is economics and they are DEMAND. They will spend their money on what they want to buy, not just what you hand them. The publishers and developers and asshole analysts are entitled. They think they are owned some fixed some of money simply because they choose to create a product. SUPPLY doesn't not build an industry, DEMAND does. What do you have if you make a product people don't want? Not a damned thing. 'How dare those entitled gamers not buy whatever we choose to make for them!!' FUCK

The only thing gamers are OWED is whatever they want to spend money on, and if we've reached the point where the two ends just don't meet, then it's over and that's that. Make all of the comparisons to other products and software or PC games you want. The fact is that right now we happen to have certain rights with the products we buy and go figure people get pissed because you tell them in a year those rights come with conditions or restrictions or may be gone completely.

Just like what Angry Joe said, if Sony does the same thing, my oh my, streets are gonna turn red with the blood of nerds and publishers.

Shame Microsoft was too cowardly to face the press/public in E3.

Sounds fine to me, the family stuff actually sounds amazing, sounds like I could share a game library with my brother in America.

And with that confirmation it's been decided I won't be buying an Xbox One. It's going to be a world of trouble once the casuals see how these restrictions effect them.

Question: Any one know the XBox360 market penetration globally?

Getting a bit of a vibe that MS may be taking the approach of concentrating on the US market, as that is where xx% of their market base; and tieing that market base into their ecosystem above and beyond everything else.

Other regions buy in, great, but if not, screw them.

Well the worldwide figures show 360 more or less even with PS3, though once the US is removed the PS3 is ahead a bit, but not massively ahead.

Probably more interesting is internet connected consoles in terms of the regions. For 360 I thought that was 60-odd percent.

Adam Orth resigned. He was not fired.

Allowing an employee to resign rather than fire them is a common courtesy in business when a normally loyal employee commits a sackable offence in error as it looks better on their CV when they apply for their next job.

I do think that MS picking who can resell their games amounts to a violation of the law.

don't worry, if it is at all shady this woman

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Commissioner_for_Digital_Agenda

will ruin their shit in europe. She's the one that dropped the gabillion dollar fine on MS when they were being anti competitive with I forget what.

I hope Don Mattrick gets booed out of Los Angeles next week.

I just want the cops to hurry up and find his seedy sex torture dungeon. With a smile like that he's obviously got one.

Just like what Angry Joe said, if Sony does the same thing, my oh my, streets are gonna turn red with the blood of nerds and publishers.

Well they'll just have to deal with it. Especially if they like the kinds of games that don't appear on the WiiU.

That said...I am hoping Sony doesn't go back on the statement that the PS4 is a console that can be used sans internet.

Every person I've argued with that took on the 'consumers are entitled' mindset has given me run-arounds about why we should be grateful to be sodomized by pubs and devs. One guy in particular on Kotaku sounded exactly like some of the shills earlier in this thread, which leads me to believe they're a lot more common than most people think.

The "upside" to how they have their system is set up is that they can change it if people bitch and moan enough. 24 hour check in won't go away, because every game is downloaded to the HD, but I can see them easily updating the system so users can just go into their xbones, select a game, then click a "release license" button or something, allowing the game to be played under a different profile.

At the very least they could update the number of people that can share a disk to more than one person. So if you don't like it, complain to MS, Ubi, EA, and Activsion. It can be fixed with a software update.

It's going to be a world of trouble once the casuals see how these restrictions effect them.
I don't think Microsoft are concerned about that. By the time they realise, they'll already own the console. The chances of them getting rid of it and buying a PS4 instead are probably pretty low at that point.

Exactly, Now we have on GAF people simping for the publishers trying to convince people 'hey, if we just put up with this, they might be REAL nice and lower the price of games' WHY? After fighting for so many years get get this chunk of money they say is killing them to not have, they would just turn around and give it back again?

As stupid as it sounds, and as much as I hate this, I support their right to do this dumb shit. They make it, they can restrict it if that's the path they want and consumers have the right to tell them to fuck off, which I hope they do. It amazes my that so many people in the industry seem to hate their own consumers now. They seem to think there is this magical 'non gamer' market waiting to be picked. That someone how people who don't play games or care about them are going to latch on and out spend people who, you know, actually buy and play games.

I actually (right today prior to this revelation) want an Xbox One over a PS4. That's saying a lot considering I've owned every playstation since launch. Turning on my xbox and skyping with friends without using a controller is very appealing.

I'm concerned about renting, loaning, and private sales in addition to trade-ins. If we apply this logic to current gen then this seems even more ridiculous. Imagine purchasing Madden for PS3 at launch and having these rules attached. There would've been hell to pay.

I don't want to overreact because Microsoft hasn't spoken on these issues in-depth. They have a lot of explaining to do. I hope Sony learns from this and doesn't implement the same policies.

They just explained everything to you, and you're sitting there saying "well, I still want one."

This is why we are fucked.

Ignoring the implications for a second.

Does anyone genuinely not have there PS3/Xbox 360 not connected to the internet? I'm genuinely curious.

I don't, Haven't since I purchased it last year. Only internet on my phone or at work/school. Shit's expensive and I make minimum wage, how hard is it to understand?

I hope Don Mattrick gets booed out of Los Angeles next week.

Not going to happen. The Xbone reveal had plenty of paid shills in the audience and pre-recorded cheers and applause pumped in.

The whole fucking auditorium could be rioting and you'd never even know.

I had 0 intentions on buying an xbone, but I'm slightly concerned sony will follow suit (or at least 3rd party pubs will make their games use these restrictions).

This is gonna be the 1st e3 where instead of being excited about the games, I'm nervous about how I'll be negatively impacted. Makes me even happier I bought a Wii U last week.

Agreed, this is probably the most fucked up result to come out of all this news, E3 is supposed to be about console hype and games, I could care less about what games will be shown right now, I just want clarification on this drm nightmare

They just explained everything to you, and you're sitting there saying "well, I still want one."

I'm sure there's a lot of people who aren't directly effected by these policies, and lack the moral conviction to boycott a system that doesn't directly effect them negatively for purely ideological reasons. It's definitely a selfish position, but it's one that I'm sure many will hold.

they should be, if this gets traction in the mass media I'm pretty sure the families with kids that don't like shelling out 60 everytime timmy wants the new lego game are gonna being saying 'wtf'

If its indeed Ubisoft, EA, and Activision who requested DRM at hardware level from console makers, then I don't see how Sony won't have a DRM something akin to MSs' own. There is no way they can brush off demands of three of the biggest publishers in the world. Best case scenario would be Sony extending game check to something like 72 hours.

"People need to realize what time we're in" ugh

The last time I checked...today...we have these rights as consumers. That's what fucking time we are in. Soon though, it's gone and we're just making a big deal out of nothing. It makes me ill.

'Hey come on guys, it's time to let it go. You had your fun, and we let you get away with owning what you buy and having the right to sell it to other people for a long time but it's over now. Don't whine about it.'

ffs

Three brothers and other family members all have Xbox360's and in general all huge fans of the console, after this anti consumer/restriction Bullshit the family discussion has swung over to the PS4 and now they are all seeing the bad and the hype has been dead/killed because of all of this unnecessary confusion.

I had a Xbox360 since launch and loved every minute, purchased a PS3 soon after but never really attached myself towards online on the PS3 due to Cross game chat, clunky UI and Controller, no mics and inferior ports, all the good PS4 press and confirmed powerful components, free online (+), no always online and Kinect has really made discussion interesting while sitting and chatting with my brothers about our choice. as of late the vote has swung, another point is most likely multiplatform titles will perform better on the PS4.

Why do all good things have to die? seriously.

The Xbox360 catered perfectly to me and these restriction really has put me in a whirl spin, a always online console? you have cut your install base by a good percentage who simply just cant play it without internet, They could at-least make XBL free to offset all this bs but in typical and logical fashion, they wont. the one time lending thing is a complete turn off, i want my brother to borrow it having in mind ill get my copy back, is that so hard to grasp?

Also that Ps4 controller really needs to be good, that could honestly swing me over to never get a Xbox, the ball is in Sonys hand not to screw things up at E3 after being in such a great position from MS blunders.

They just explained everything to you, and you're sitting there saying "well, I still want one."

I still want one. these policies do not effect me in the slightest. I don't sell games, xbox is always online for me so it's fine for me.

day 1 for this and the ps4 as well. I'm in it for the games, not the politics.

I really don't know what to say but, at least, for me, this is awful. AWFUL.

yes but the real question is, are you going to vote with your dollars?

Now Sony does it as well.

Are you still voting with your dollars?

pretty much for most people I'd say. I always buy 100% digital and live in an area with very good internet connection so these don't affect me in the slightest either. I still think it's a dirty as fuck business practice though and I'm on the fence about supporting them again because I feel they should be punished for obvious greed. I really want the goose that laid the golden egg story to come true for MS in this case. If sony does it as well then fuck them too. However, the Wii U is a pretty terrible effort by nintendo this time around.... only other option is the steambox which sort of feels a bit like half life 3 in terms of existing in a tangible form.

Considering the amount of retro gaming that I do, I can't imagine a console with the Xbox's draconian DRM bullshit. Imagine your games being lost to time and locked away behind an online DRM check. I have no intention of ever owning an Xbox One.

My son does not.
His bedroom is not wired for internet, and his Xbox360 is an older model that did not come with wireless internet.
Kinda ironic, considering Microsoft's stance now.
Didn't both the Wii AND the PS3 come with wireless internet from the get-go?

I'd be extremely delighted to see all media outlets covering how horribly the Xbone failed. What I don't want to see are the people that are brainwashed into thinking there's any kind of positive outcome to this console, justify it, accept it, and praise it. Also it'd break me to see Sony following suit for at least some of these anti-piracy restrictions.

uh, yeah? i live in a city prone to hurricanes, internet can be down for extensive periods even without network fuckups on their end.

i also really love playing older games from time to time, as well as lending, borrowing, renting, bartering and the like.

10 family members can share? So, what will the 10 member family plan cost? Right now, a family plan is $100 a year...so $250 a year for your "family" accounts? I mean, I'm sure Xbox Live gold is required.

I love my Xbox, rarely buy used games (but I do trade in a lot of them), and hate paying for gold.

I feel like I'm not buying the next Xbox. If I do, it will be years after launch and only if game prices depreciate with age. Until then, I will just work through my huge Xbox 360 and Steam backlogs.

I actually was wondering if we might get some nice jeers from the crowd this E3. Exciting.

Considering the people that attend these events, namely journalists, I highly doubt this will happen. They want their free food, their free games/console, and the opportunity to advance their career.

Besides, like at the unveiling, we will probably get some more fake applause mixed in with "real" applause from those who worked so hard on this project to finally see it unveiled.

If no major media outlets trash MS today, or even gaming sites, then you can pretty much forget anything happening at E3.

This is probably why they cancelled all those interviews and round tables, right?

Must be. I can't wait for their event. I hope if they don't have embarrassing internal guys cheering again, I hope there's no cheers, and maybe even boos. Though I do imagine that their new tactic is to try and paint all of this one way, so I do imagine people who were working on this awful platform will be the only fools cheering for it.

Wait so 10 family members can play the same game on 10 different xbox ones all at the same time!?

Yourself and 1 other family member in your 10 member list can play a game from your game library which is all defined on your 'home console'

Not sure if that means 2 people can play the same game at the same time though....probably not

its better than before i guess.
my internet never craps out so even if it does i could watch some movies while its gone.
not the best way to handle this but whatever.

You miss the point here. It doesn't affect you today, but a few years from now they might just change something that affects you greatly, and by then it's too late. None of this affects me either, but in the long view this is just a very bad direction for the industry to be headed.

Turning on my xbox and skyping with friends without using a controller is very appealing.

Who says you won't be able to do that on the PS4? It will also come with a camera, and may have voice actions. You could still use a controller at least.

So I've just moved into a new flat and won't have Internet access for 5 days while by line is activated. If I had an Xbox one I couldn't play my games until I got online. Thanks

(Posting from my 3G phone)

Wait so 10 family members can play the same game on 10 different xbox ones all at the same time!?

10 can have it installed but only 2 can play the same game at the same time.

No? From the text I get the sense that any retailer can participate if they want. The OP construed the word "participating" into some negative, selective process but I don't see anything in the document that implies that.

Yeah, but the retailer will have to buy into Microsoft's Azure computer system to set this up and pay all the relevant licensing fees every time a trade/sale is made. That's quite a large barrier of entry to an independent retailer.

uh, yeah? i live in a city prone to hurricanes, internet can be down for extensive periods even without network fuckups on their end.

So if Sony pulls similar, you'll buy neither console? really?

I can't see it to be honest. A game will come out that sets the gaming world on fire and most of us won't be able to resist. The bullshit they are pulling will become less and less important to all of us rapidly degrading everytime a 'last of us' is released and scores 10s across the board.

This is the new normal. What is really terrible is they just could have avoided this by allowing you to play from disc and only from disc if they wanted. Just push digital sales and they would have what they wanted.
