Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Craziest thing about the 24-hour checkin is the thought that in 20 years, or whenever Microsoft's servers go down, the console will just straight-up no longer play video games.

Which is mainly why I disapprove of it. I'm a nostalgia gamer. I like to revisit games later down the road. How can I do that if the servers are EA'd

Yeah. Personally I think Microsoft is a great company with forward-thinking, consumer-friendly policies. I can't wait to purchase an Xbox One console and maybe a copy of Kinectimals 2.

Not seeing how this pertains to my post. I understand your frustrated but people here are acting like it's the end of the world. Again, I understand the frustration. I bet it'll eventually affect me at some point but MS is going to be releasing games that I want to play. So will the PS4 and the WiiU. I'm not going to flip out and rage over the internet. Feel free to do so. I just think people need to chill out.

24 hour online check is the biggest bummer to me. Everything else I could live with, I hate the idea of no used games but I'd combat that by waiting for a sale or the bargain bin for every single game I bought. But I can't justify the 24 hour check, there'd be no way around it. You're being treated like a criminal, only allowed permission to play the games you've bought if MS decides it's OK. For all the comparisons to Steam I've been seeing for weeks, this is a thousand times worse than Steam which at least has the common decency of an offline mode.

but as pointed out before the only way to make it like steam was DD only and people were not having that either but in the scheme of this, they probably should have just done that for christ's sake

would have been easier for people to understand and just not buy it and it would be different from Sony so disc people had a choice (As far as we know right now)

Should have done a Steam-box...

if ms is giving publishers the ability to enable/disable game resale, i can 100% assure you this will be on ps4.

Would it be possible on the PS4? You need to remember that the PS4 has been confirmed to work offline whenever you want

Could someone make an "Adam Orth: A Look Back" thread? I'd find it really interesting to see what folks think of the guy now when he was just saying essentially what Microsoft has said in a more formal tone. Do people still think he got what he deserved?
The fact that the entire company seems to consist of assholes like him doesn't really mean what he did was appropriate.

I personally hope everyone in the xbox division gets the same reward. This shit is toxic.

Or they lie about it. I can see major griefing and trolling with this system. Get a few people to lie another person said N word over and over. Get him banned and he loses all his games with no recourse. This is going to back fire.

Ive read the Xbox banned forum a few times and yea its pretty intense.

Can you buy used PC games and play them online?

Is there a such things as used PC games anymore? Are you going full ....

That is the most awful thing about the system. Microsoft's answer to this would be you can still listen to music and watch blurays.

If they're feeling generous maybe they'll patch it out.

But that's STILL hoping they're nice enough, AND requires you to get your system online in case they pull the patch itself. It's a rotten, short sighted scenario, but then this is from the publisher of games whose libraries usually aren't the ones you'll care to revisit in another decade or two anyway, and most of their titles that are like that are the fruits from acquisitions of some sort.

Well Microsoft sure do have a history of obsolescence so I wouldn't be shocked if this was the plan all along. I mean no one would buy Xbox Two unless The One didn't stop working right?

My point is, I can probably pull over 1000 things in my life right now that would worry me more than a consoles DRM rules.

I use my xbox to play games and to relax. I can play games on the new consoles.

I guess if you're ultra passionate about game politics this would interest you.

It's not even something like my phone which I use throughout the day for work. Gaming is just a small side hobby that brings me enjoyment.

Of course and that is understandable. The reason for the excess uproar etc however considers both the direct and indirect consequences this may have. It's more about the precedent it sets, and how it may change the current market dynamics in regards to prices, ownership and such.

They really could have branded this communication better.
Something like:

What is the maximum number of days my console can be offline before it refuses to play all my games?
ONE.

How many people in my family can play my games at the same time as me?
ONE.

If a publisher allows it, how many times can a game be given to somebody else?
ONE.

How many months does someone have to be on my Friends list before I could give them a game?
ONE.

Xbox ONE.

Well, while we are on the topic of astroturfing, I figured I'd check out the top comments on another astroturfing hotbed in reddit.

TLDR:

You need to connect at least once every 24 hours to keep playing offline. So there you have it.

They also punted the used/rental/borrowing thing back to the publishers aka Xbox One supports used games and license transfers with no fee.

Plus 10 users per account, like one big family account. Hmm. All under one XBL plan?

When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too.

Also, launch digital releases it seems.

So in conclusion, and by design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup.

Who the heck says something like that conclusion if you are not a marketing robot? Also the only negative he happened to include was the online requirement.

'As we move into this new generation of games and entertainment, from time to time, Microsoft may change its policies, terms, products and services to reflect modifications and improvements to our services, feedback from customers and our business partners or changes in our business priorities and business models or for other reasons. We may also cease to offer certain services or products for similar reasons.'

Fucking ominous

It's not even gonna take that long if you compare it to the original xbox live servers :x

Again, cboat has confirmed that his outburst and the subsequent (GAF-initiated) furor caused Microsoft to alter their "always-online" policy to the current 24-hour one.

Anyone still planning to get the XBOne should probably be thanking him for his dumb twitter moment - and thanking GAF for getting MS to at least dial down their dumb DRM a little.

Seriously, anyone with an ounce of concern over their privacy should look at this and take particular note of slide 4 where it shows Microsoft becoming the first company to join the NSA's PRISM program to collect data on users. This is definitely one of the more troubling things I have ever seen to have it laid out so plainly.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/prism-collection-documents/

If you doubt your privacy because of Kinect 2.0 and its always-on policy, PLEASE READ THIS and RECONSIDER YOUR PURCHASE.

someone should make a thread!

Only you and another one of the 10 "family members" can access the games at the same time. Also, for those non-owners, the system requires an internet connection every hour instead of 24 hours.

I bet each account can only be tied to one "family" also, so you can't join multiple game-sharing circles.

Now be aware of Microsoft strategy:

1- This info was released today because they don't want to ruin their E3 with it. Also, the dust is having some time to fall back on the ground.

2- They will stay nebulous about this during E3 and really focusing on games, so it can soften your mind and appease people.

3- Without meetings after the show, they will keep this whole thing in check and hope people just stop caring and forget.

Now its all about us not letting this happen!!

also, I'm kinda thinking the TitanFall leak right before this nuke is kind of suspect...

Good lord, the way this is playing out... Between Microsoft's announcements (or failure thereof), WaPo's blowup of NSA datamining, and other certain factors, any hope I have for Microsoft this generation is done.

Sony has already made some good announcements (primarily the no-always on due to lacking infrastructure), but I want to see them follow through at E3. Otherwise I may have to throw in the towel. Depressing, really.

Back to that wine.

I can't believe someone is releasing a console on which you cannot play single player games offline.

Someone finally went and did it.

Crazy times we live in.

It's absolutely inexcusable. What if I lose my job, and we need to tighten things up, financially? One of the things we could cut is our internet bill each month. Now if we do this, our XB1 becomes useless as a game console.

Not so far fetched, we've been there before. Obviously I hope it's never an issue again, but seriously, it's one of many reasons I've lost internet access in the past. Power loss, moving, switching internet providers... any number of things have happened.

Fact is, no one should be allowed to tell me that I can't play the games I bought, ever. I've never bought a used game. I've never downloaded an illegal copy of any game, ever.

I buy every single piece of videogame software new, from retail. Never traded anything in. That's hundreds of games, that are all sitting on my shelves. All of which I bought because I support the hell out of this industry.

How anyone can sit here and say "Day one for Xbox!" at this point, is beyond my comprehension. I've got an Xbox and a 360, but they can take their new policy and fuck themselves, with all due respect.

Really hoping Sony doesn't pull a similar card, would be really disappointing.

Sigh.
