Xbox Play Anywhere Boosts Player Activity by 20%, Says Microsoft

The Xbox president says players spend more money and a lot more time on Xbox Play Anywhere games compared to those that don't support it.

In an interview with Fortune on YouTube, Sarah Bond reveals that users are taking full advantage of Xbox Play Anywhere. The service allows gamers to buy a game on a single platform and enjoy it across other devices.

The convenience of a one-time purchase naturally attracts players to these XPA-supported titles, and in return, they spend more money and time on those games.

When we actually looked at the player behavior of people who were playing XPA games, we saw that they were spending 20% more time. We said, 'okay, people actually really love this feature.'

Based on these metrics, Xbox decided to go all in and invest more in Xbox Play Anywhere. This has resulted in a more amplified roster over the years that includes games of all scales and genres.

The publisher has also announced a bunch of new games for the service in the latest Xbox Partner preview event.

Sony also did this with Vita-PS3 and later Vita-PS4, without giving it a fancy name like "Play Anywhere". Thats just the basic thing you expect from an online platform, like Linux-Mac-Windows cross buy in GOG and Steam.

I know it's a great feature. But without Play Anywhere some people would buy two copies. Now they buy one… Or zero if the game is on Gamepass too.

But I see a couple people in this thread saying they wouldn't buy any copy without XPA so I guess that's it.

I mean they called it Cross-Buy and put it on game cases; is "Play Anywhere" that much fancier? Also, getting dual-entitlement to a PC version and a console version isn't exactly the same thing as what Sony was doing.

Wish Elden Ring and Red Dead 2 were Play Anywhere. I bought those 2 games on the Series X, and then sold the series X.
I think Alan Wake 2 was another.

I like their mental gymnastics but you feel like these numbers are meaningless due to the current structure of the way they even track or obviously provide these numbers. Since 2012 between Vita and PS3, later between PS4 and Vita. GOG and Steam also do this between different operating systems. None of them used a fancy title like "Play Anywhere".

It says "spend more money and time on those games", a subtle wording but think about it. By grouping money with time, they give away that they are talking about what you do with the game post-sale.

Start the game on another device and spend $1 during that play session? You have now spent more time and money on the game.

There's nothing fancy about saying "cross buy". They have to communicate the existence of this feature some way. GOG and Valve don't even do that though.
