Xbox Series X|S Best-Selling Console in the UK in March, Switch in 2nd and PS5 in 3rd - Sales (Christopher Dring)

"March looks like it's been another tough month for console stock in the UK," said Dring. "Particularly on PS5, although it's better than February. Xbox Series S and X had the best month in March, primarily due to the arrival of more X consoles. All three platforms are down year-to-date."

GG MS, more stock = more sales. The demand for the next gen consoles is real high even in their 2nd years.

Well not sure if that was the case in UK right? It was in stock for weeks out here in the US.

But it being down year to date does not point to a lot of inventory regardless.

Wonder if all the insane inflation and general goings-on are having an impact on gaming demand.

I def saw it was in Amazon UK for like two or three days earlier in March. It was like two days at the end of the month in US

I wonder why the ps5 is in such short supply? Maybe just more world wide demand? Less fab space because of increased competition from other industries?

It was in stock for weeks at Walmart in the US. I expect a bigger month in the US unless demand has truly dropped. There is no other explanation if there was seemingly that much available stock but it's still down. That would mean in actuality people aren't buying what's there nearly as fast. I mean when you're paying 6+ dollars for gas out here when it's normally 2 or 3 depending on where you live ... that's not that outrageous a turn of events. Gaming spend would likely be the first thing to drop in times like this.

Who knows? Who cares? it is what it is. Xbox sold more in the UK this month. I expect the same in the US.

Uhh ... what are you talking about? No one is doubting this. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Talk about a huge straw man pulled out from nowhere.
Do you know how to read? People in this very thread are talking about it being a less than reliable source. Go back and read previous threads when these monthly figures are posted and tell me that PS5 fans aren't doing victory laps.

Sony isn't able to make PlayStation consoles. At least not until the summer. Ps4 and 5 are impossible to purchase anywhere rn.

Irrespective of sales numbers. You can just see how MS is pulling out of all stops to make the Xbox a very competitive proposal. Sony can't even supply plastic PS5 face plates. Not sure what's happening at Sony HQ, but certainly ain't looking good from this end.

Vg chartz are fucking kidding? They have no clue and guess at numbers!

Back in the old days of this site, people realized that VGchartz is fake numbers. They guess and always have.

Vgchartz...

I can guess too

The tweets are from the head of http://GamesIndustry.biz

VGChartz is just the article reporting it that the OP decided to quote.

I'm guessing a lot of people will dismiss this just seeing the VGChartz name in the header without reading the post first.

Good for Xbox.

Bad for the industry that is supplying the market enough… lower than last years, that was already heavy supply constrained, means the numbers are really bad.

For reference March 2021 had 217k consoles sold, down 7.6% from March 2020.

Tough year for PlayStation sales so far.

Good for you though MS, great consoles and deserves the sales. If they keep this up it will be crazy.

already have a switch but probably will pick up a series x. i am holding off as long as i can in hopes for a slim or pro version. i got my PC for now but won't upgrade it. £11/month to access game pass is really good value.

as for ps5, i don't know if/when i'll get one. i have a ps4 to play my ps4 games and the likes of HFW, God of War, Gran Turismo 7. going to need some good exclusives to tempt me to buy. maybe in a few years.

You do realize PS5 has outsold Series X by a large margin so far and both are selling record numbers?

Sony is having ZERO problems selling PS5s. They're having issues making enough because of the chip shortage. Every unit that comes off the factory line is immediately sold. Same with Series X until very recently. The only difference is Sony has made more PS5s and thus have the current lead.

Oh, no. I'm well aware of the situation. I wouldn't say the ps5 is massively ahead of the xbox this time. This isn't 2 to 1 like last gen.

Sony needs to sort their manufacturing. I hope the high clock on the gpu isn't causing issues in binning the chips.

Sony had head start, with MS focusing on xcloud. that is why have higher numbers. Especially with them ordering 2x wafer of xbox from amd.

Still, Sony has markets like japan and Europe. In the long Sony, would outsell Xbox. But that depends if xbox doesn't penetrate Europe.

Vgchartz is just getting ahead of the Gamesindustry.biz article, there is nothing about the accuracy of vgchartz to be raised here.

Look. It could just be me, but I don't understand the logic of how can you have zero problems selling something that you can't make? Sooner or later, people may move on and the opportunity will be gone.

Edit: Imagine you invested 500 mil in R&D and you sell only 400 consoles.

Because the consoles didn't hit 30m yet. People want them now.
I still don't have xsx.

Xbox or PS beating each other doesn't mean much since stock is low and nobody ever brings up exact numbers anymore.

But beating Switch is impressive. Not too often Switch gets beat the past bunch of years.

Tired of seeing this Christopher guy in these forums lol.

Welcome to 16+ years ago, the guy is a grifter but if you're not British you'll not be aware of him being a small fish in a small pond. He's the UK's Jason Scehrier except not as good as baiting the woke for views.

Never heard of that guy. With 11k Twitter followers, I don't think many people do either. Jason S has 340k.

I removed them now. I didn't know they were hated here.
I don't get the hate but they have been off previously. I think they have gotten slightly better but ehh.

I hope to get Chris's numbers tomorrow including software sales numbers, want to see more stats about Elden Ring.

On the sony shortage, hopefully we get some insight in the next earnings call about a new 2022 forecast.

Chris Dring will only come up cause of the weekly, monthly sales articles. The link to Jason S is a bit weird as they don't really post articles on the same topics aka crunch or leaks

Vgchartz counts today?

Anyway with stock available you get sales.
GJ Teamxbox.
When the later year games release it will be real interesting.

Good news for Xbox taking the top spot, justifies the strategy this gen.
Those lower sales will probably lead to more cross gen versions of games already announced like we have seen earlier this year, too much money to leave on the table.

Vgchartz counts today?
You ignoring the OG source is Chris Dring?

Yeah, it will be interesting to see Sony's updated forecast for next year. I am trying to find the yougov survey that showed that 60% of sampled consumers would buy another console if their preferred console wasn't in stock.

That's the one that really counts as it's not really supply constrained in any way and has been taking top spots everywhere for months.

Sony said they only had 2 mil for the quarter, and they blew a lot of that early, leaving everyone else to clean up later.

Will be interesting to see what thier next guidance is or if Xbox has managed to secure more wafers going forward.

That early lead could evaporate quickly if Sony is now investing into PS5 streaming chips like MS did last year.

They are just regurgitating everyones favorite Gamesindustrybiz information.

(If you bothered to look,) We all know many here regard Gamesindustrybiz as the be all for UK sales.

Yes, worldwide demand. Found plenty in my country recently and it's much easier to get. Xbox doesn't sell here at all and if any found here they're US spec (imported).
