Xbox360 and VGA: Success!

Just curious Stinkles, how does the 360’s output look on a 1080i TV? I know that the 360 will scale to that resolution; I’m just wondering how well the scaler works in practice.

Wait, so natively it can't render at this res? It's scaled up? If so, from what res? 720p?

360 can render at a native 1080i, but typically games aren't coded for it. No worries, 720p scaled to 1080i still looks very good (not perfect, but notably better than 480p).

Ok I have what may be a dumb question. If you were to manually squash the image to 16:9, where the black bars are, would those just be black pixels. So say if you put your 4:3 monitor at 1280x720 to create a stretched image and manually squished it, would you be getting less res than the full 1280x720?

You get full resolution in the squeezed image, no pixels are wasted... But I think your monitor is ought to support a higher resolution than the one you're currently "squishing" if you want every pixel to be counted for... In other words, the 16:9 area should have at least 1280x270 physical pixels (phosphors dots) because the electron gun of the CRT will be beaming 1280x270 pixels on a portion of the screen when it was supposed to be beaming them on the entire screen instead... I don't know how correct this is as it just popped in my head right now (never thought about it before), and I wonder what the maximum resolution of a 4:3 CRT would have to be in order to get a full 1280x720 resolution in a 16:9 area... Mine for examples maxe out at 1280x1024 (a 17 incher).

Ah fuck it, I'll just run it at 720p.

I'll take progressive output over interlaced anyday. Also, I don't think that TV I have renders things very well when displaying an interlaced signal.

Would I get any sort of degredation if I used a VGA to DVI cable to hook up to my TV? I only have two component inputs and they're currently being used by my Gamecube & Xbox. Would be nice to finally use the DVI input.

I too have a DVI connector.

Wonder if 360 will ever have a native DVI/HDCP cable....?

Question, what length is the 360's VGA cable?

Uh, you can't really convert VGA to DVI without spending a lot of money, and you'd gain nothing.

Unless your TV supports DVI-I (analog over DVI). But that's feature for monitors, not TVs.

I feal pretty stupid for asking this...but im gonna anyway :D

i kinda understand what the hell your all talking about, but i have no idea how i would do it...

what sort of connector thing and where do i buy these things ( in canada ) ??? i would love to get my 360 hooked up to my moniter...hell i would be happy to get my xbox hooked up to it :P

any help? :)

You buy a xbox 360 VGA cable and plug it in, simple as that.

They're supposed to be available at launch so you just have to find one. ;)

# DV-15S Standard VGA Connector
# Video output settings of 480p, 720p, or 1080i
# Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound output
# 8-foot long shielded cable

that's it. :)

oh...haha, thanks :)

see i feal stupid :P

i thought it was something i would have to get that plugged into my PC, then the normal 360 cables would plug into, this looks like it plugs right into the moniter or something.

to bad, woulda been nice to have it set some way so i could just flip from PC to 360 nice and quick.

You could just switch back and forth between PC and 360 input, but then you'd have to buy a switcher.

I wouldn't recommend it though simply because you can save the $ you'd spend on it for something else and it takes all of 3 seconds to switch the cord by hand.

Just checking, but this 360 cable does plug into the back of the moniter right? but where do those red and white sound cables go? im guessing i need one of those things pictured on the first page i guess...

it all sounds so weird ! :P

Yeah, the vga cable goes from the system to the back of the monitor. The red & white connections go to whatever you're using to provide the audio. Monitor (if it has 'em), pc audio(card) or another external source like your stereo or external speakers etc.

The things on the first page you're talking about are for headphones, but you can't use that directly unless you go through an amplifier first (because it'd be to low and you couldn't hear anything).

sounds like its gonna be difficult to get sound for me :P

hopefully i can pick up one of them nice samsung tv/moniters ...they do this much easier ! ...and then i can tap the PC button or PIP button and talk on trillian at the same time :P

thanks for the help and info, i may give it a try anyway :)

If you have desktop PC speakers with a 3.5mm connection, you just need to buy a 3.5mm input to 2 RCA audio input cable, plug the 3.5mm jack into the 3.5mm input on the cable and plug the VGA cables 2 RCA into the cable too.

With this the Xbox360 will output audio through your PC speakers.

Could these be modded for use on other console's like PS2 or Gamecube?

Why was Stinkles banned?
If it's official and I had to guess I'd say it was because of this:

I'm sorry, does your vagina hurt? Read the rest of the stuff - the other games are coming. I do get that there are multiple reasons to get a 360 AND worry about BC, but that's not what most of the complainers are doing. they're just bitching to be bitches.
...and similar posts in the BC list thread. He went a bit crazy trying to explain the same thing over and over to people who like to reply to posts before reading them (or using any logic for that matter).

Again, if it is official, I can't say I blame him. I personally had to rewrite three of my posts in that same thread after thinking about what I wrote. It's frustrating as hell trying to talk to people who won't listen...

Really, doesn't sound that bad to me.
