I really really hope that "Console is DIE" and "This is a console? THIS IS A CONSOLE? THIS IS CONSOLE" becomeGAF memes along the lines of "I don't know how much you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert).

Seriously if the market is big enough to sustain PC/Steam, Sony, Nintendo, Google, Apple, and Xbox all at the same time there really isnt much concern for anyones future

But let's be honest here - if that happened, both Sony and Microsoft would shit themselves.

Honestly, I feel like if MS had sold 10 million units to customers they'd formally announce it. At the very least Major Nelson or Phil Spencer or someone would tweet it.

They already made their 10 million statement with that "soon" article. Them announcing an official 10 million number would be redundant.

Anyway, no: I think it does have a future, though obviously not the one it was originally designed for. It's an all-in-one box with an increasingly respectable stable of games.

While I agree on what I think you point is, namely that consoles as they should be, simple game playing devices with no other functionality whatsoever, booting extremely fast, offering no visible OS and working by plug & play, seem to have vanished, and also agree on the notion that this is a bad thing, I do have to say that I couldn't stop laughing after reading the lines "Console is DIE" and "THIS IS CONSOLE" :D.
 
It has a future. Just not the one Microsoft wanted. They will be second place and sail along. Next generation they can try again to compete for first place
 
I couldn't care less about the OP's broken arguments (and english) about the Xbox One "inevitable failure", really. The Xbox One will be perfectly fine.

Answer to both, yes!. both are consoles. Only difference is time of introduction and effort spent on developing the consoles from different timeline (with respect to costs).

Console is not DIE, Console attain accession to TRANSCENDENCE currently by not dying a premature death in current hardware evolution rate.

Change of perspective you see, where consoles life is extended by attaining non_hardcoded/non_hardware'd/non_perma_embedded_chip/console_ROM life. Prior if console buggy, console dying and later dead. Currently if console buggy, console get rebirth with firmware upgrade via internet (no need to take console to factory or get replacement)

Same with game, games not die because of online updates. Games live another life, because of updates. Because time/cost/effort to make games high; when games are complex, then games not perfect against time of introduction. Because everyone want complex game, visually or rules wise.
 
I don't understand what you mean. The XB1 is selling quite well relative to the average for console releases. You discuss the online paywall, but sony has the exact same thing. Isnt the future of the console simply "try and secure better exclusives than the other guys" and as a result "try and sell as many units as possible in order to justify the division"?

Why is the 50 million and 18.6 million on the same level? It destroys the purpose of a bar graph which is to get information very quickly in an easy to read format, this makes the PS4 and 3DS look like it has the same sale numbers.

Because the graphic is in percentages and portable and home consoles are sharing the same graphic without hardly any visual separation. However, the values of the graphs are quite clear underneath each bar so it's not all that terrible if you have a bit of common sense.
