The Extraterrestrial Combat Unit (or XCOM) was formed to defend against increasing world-wide UFO activity at the beginning of the
21st century, an independent body charged with investigating and defeating the alien threat. This elite multi-national organisation is
funded by all the major world powers and is staffed by the finest pilots, soldiers, scientists and engineers, outfitted with the best
technologies that humanity has to offer.

But they’re not the only game in town.

Even as extra-terrestrial forces deploy previously unseen creatures into battle and XCOM scientists race to unlock the myriad secrets
of alien nanotechnologies, a new threat to the future of mankind has emerged. A secretive paramilitary organisation naming itself
EXALT has arisen and is vying for acquisition of alien artefacts and technologies while attempting to undermine XCOM field operations.
Their goals are unknown. Their capabilities are unknown. They must be eliminated.

You will be fighting a difficult battle, Commander, a fight for this world’s very survival, against forces unknown and within. You may not
be able to afford to bring all your operatives alive.

Good luck, Commander.

iNYMPljtJuWSO.gif

MIND YOUR MELD: Locate and secure the new nanotech resource Meld during field operations to fuel the enhanced development of
your soldiers. Be warned – meld is unstable and will self-destruct shortly after the commencement of operations, necessitating strategic
evaluation as to whether to risk your soldiers in pursuit of this unearthly substance.

GENOME PROJECT: Modify your troops at the genetic level to unlock an additional tech tree of abilities, granting them startling new abilities
such as regenerative health, better psionic resistance or bio-electric anti-stealth capabilities – through the mysteries of science, not magic.
Gene mod troopers maintain their class abilities and may still be candidates for psionic operations, if appropriate.

I NEVER ASKED FOR THIS: Augment XCOM operatives with Mechanical Exoskeletal Cybersuits to create walking, thinking tanks with
devastating firepower and their own unique abilities. MEC troopers sacrifice their limbs and any psionic or class-based skills for their giant
mech suits, but inherit an ability depending on their previous class prior to surgery. They also get to punch aliens with a giant rocket-fist.

MARS ATTACKS (AGAIN): Face terrifying new xeno threats such as the cyber-suited Mechtoid (twin-plasma mini-cannons, cannot use cover,
won’t be killed if mind-melded partner dies) and the squid-like Seeker (stealth-mode hit-and-run units that attempt to ambush and
strangle soldiers who aren’t being covered by allies). [More enemies may yet be forthcoming: situation uncertain].

EXALTED ONES: Combat the secretive-yet-dapper paramilitary organisation EXALT as they attempt to interfere with XCOM operations in
pursuit of their own unknown agenda. Deploy and extract agents from covert operations to disrupt terror cells and procure intelligence. Find
and assault their primary base of operations to eliminate the terrorist threat once and for all.

PROGENITOR: Operation Progeny, a set of 3 unique missions similar to the DLC release Operation Slingshot, is included with Enemy Within.
It’s about some psychic French lady and the three competing factions who want her. Hopefully it’s not super creepy, but it’s called Operation
Progeny, you do the math.

BASE ESCAPE: There’s probably a base defence mission or something, judging by the trailers and by lead dev Ananda Gupta repeatedly
avoiding the question.
CONFIRMED. Remember to place your hangers and elevators at one end of the base so you can chokepoint/kill zone
the entire invading force – oh wait, it doesn’t work that way anymore?

ALL THE REST OF IT: A host of major and minor tweaks to game balance, UI improvements, new cosmetic armour options, 47 new maps, new
items and abilities to be researched and developed, and additional Second Wave options (including an option that tweaks flanking, an
option that enables save scumming, and an option that randomises non-weapon-based class abilities). Panic has been rebalanced with a
drastic aim penalty to cut down on friendly fire instances, and audio packs for foreign languages may be used on a per-soldier basis (so
Russians can speak Russian etc). More here.

BUG FIXES: NO MORE GODDAMN TELEPORT BUGS. Patches have also been promised for those who choose not to upgrade to Enemy Within.

So is this an expansion pack or a standalone game? Does it have a fully new campaign, like a sequel or something?

XCOM: Enemy Within (‘EW’) is integrated expansion software for the original XCOM: Enemy Unknown (‘EU’). It will require the original software in
order to operate. On specialised console hardware, it will come bundled with the original software, as well as additional DLC modules for enhanced
enjoyment.

In line with the established Firaxis philosophy regarding expansion software, EW does not simulate a secondary or sequel campaign. Instead, it
layers on multiple new strategic and tactical elements onto the core systemic functionality of EU to create a new battlefield experience.

Wait, so it’s DLC on the PC, but you gotta buy it on disc on consoles?

Correct. Size restrictions and other classified issues prevent the effective distribution of EW via third-party controlled networks that are not
Steamworks-enabled.

So is a game of EW going to be longer and more difficult than a game of EU?

Uncertain. Current estimates claim that a full-length campaign should be only slightly longer than standard. Although ‘normal’ difficulty games will
likely be slightly easier to complete due to the increased availability of alien technologies, ‘classic’ and ‘impossible’ mode games have reportedly
been rebalanced to be even tougher.

This got anything to do with that 2K Marin “The Bureau” thingy?

That information is classified at this point in time. Research is ongoing.

Isn’t this one meant to be set underwater and you’re, like, fighting Cthulhu or something?

[[FILE NOT FOUND]]

Even with all these new crazy +1 modifiers and psychic genetic mechanoid abilities and all of this crazy bullshit, how the fuck did I still miss four
80% shots in a row and then get squad wiped from across the map?

That’s XCOM, baby!

Well I was pretty indifferent to this a few weeks ago, but now I am actually looking forward to it. With South Park being delayed this is probably the game I am most looking forward to for the rest of 2013.

Going to wait on a sale. XCom was probably my game of last year, but this doesn't seem to have enough content to justify the price tag to me.

I'm lucky they didn't do Terror from the Deep instead. No matter how much content that I had, nostalgia would have dictated I bought it.

Astery

the price tag is a bit heavy, but still acceptable imo, especially comparing with the slingshot DLC and elite soldier pack.....Bought and ready to rage over a 99% accuracy miss.

I was really excited about this, until I found out you couldn't purchase it as an independent DLC at a reduced price if you already owned unkown. Am I missing something as to why this is not possible? I understand why it might be an issue on consoles, but what about PC?

You talkin' about consoles? Filesize limitations on console distribution networks is the official explanation.

You can just buy it as a DLC on PC

Still not really convinced that the new content is enough to make the campaign interesting again but I guess I'll just buy it and if it turns out to be boring, too bad. Real sequel in 2015 please though!

About the same as gods and kings at first launch, iirc?

You realise you need enemy unknown for it to work on pc, right

I have unkown, and the other DLC's. Although I got the DLC's once they went on sale for next to nothing, guess I'll be waiting on this as well.

I've beat the game three times, and absolutely love TBS games. But I just can't rationalize the price tag.

I'm gonna start a new classic run with the expansion but I will probably get murdered because I lack patience.

Seems like it comes with a lot more content than I first thought. Would have been nice with a new campaign, but I think all the other new stuff will manage to bring out that x-com addiction again.

Is it wrong that with new hardware launching the same month, I am far more interested in an update to a game I've already finished 8 times?

I can't blame you, that's generally about the point I buy Civ expansions too

I loved XCOM, but I strangely never feel like replaying it; don't think I will bite for this price. Can't wait to read your impressions though (and Jintor's Let's Play, hint hint)

Just posting to say that my media blackout has been fairly successful, and I'm going into this relatively blind. I just know that I can punch aliens THROUGH FUCKING CARS and blow them up good.

Damn, sounds pretty good. Don't want to know too much about it myself; I just hope they designed a bunch of new maps.

So bought. Planned to do a new playthrough earlier during the summer, but felt I had to wait for this. The battles are so fun in this XCOM! :D

How was the ps3 version of this? Run well and what not? I own it on steam, but seeing how the commander version isn't much more, and my pc has been acting up, might get that instead.

Really hyped though, was my GOTY for 2012

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
One thing I wished with the game / series is that they had more bullet based weaponry. Since never was a huge fan of energy based weapons in general.

Having both exist and with trade offs for using one or the other would have been much cooler.

Still cant wait to play through this as dug the original game a lot more than I had initially thought I would. If anything granted its a different genre its a hell of a lot better than the TPS Xcom spinoff title.

As someone with both, it's fine. Mission load times are a bit longer, IQ isn't quite there, and there's some occasional rare framerate stutters/LOD pop in during in game cutscenes like the Skyranger landing shots... but for all other intents and purposes it runs great. Hell, even the iOS version runs well.

Yeah I enjoyed watching Jake Solomon promote the original game, but I pretty much spoiled everything about it before playing it. A huge part of the xcom experience to me is running into a 'what the hell is THAT' kind of enemy and then finding out the hard way what it is. Since they've already finished pandering to the people who just wanted rehashes of the old enemies, they're free to throw some creative aliens at us in the expansion.

Like most here I'm waitting for a price drop, price tags seems too high for the content it provides. It will be a perfect excuse to replay the game though, one of my favorites of last year.

Sweet, seeing how this is a game I end up playing for hours and hours at a time, a couch is a fair trade off;p
Just wanted to make sure it wasn't a garbage port before pulling the trigger on amazon. Thanks!

I wouldn't pay $40, and would agree if you're talking about the console version. But thankfully Greenman saved the day, $20 is perfectly fine if you ask me.

But yeah, an excuse to play again is a selling point all its own.

Woah, familiar faces all up in here.

LP vets, I still actually have one more mission archived... I just never got around to writing it up...

I actually find it rather difficult to play XCOM if I'm not constructing a story around it. It's somehow not as fun.

I'm talking about the PC version, it's 26.99 euros on steam ($36), haven't checked prices elsewhere but on steam it's too expensive for me.

Weird, both ps3 and 360 versions of the preoder for this are "temporarily out of stock" already on amazon. Small print run?

Parallel universe LP required!

It was one of my favorite threads on GAF to follow.

I'm really excited for this.

Hopefully those mechs can be coloured into Gundam-esque mechs!

If not I'll settle for giving them funny hats.

So does this include or sueprcede the slingshot dlc? As I purchased said DLC but never actually got around to replaying the game.

Nope, biggest thing to come out until next year as far as I'm concerned.

I really can't wait to get my hands on this.

Yep. Or any strategy game for that matter. Would love another LP.

Maybe in a few months when people have worked out strategies and I feel confident there won't be another expansion out in a year to pre-empt me. Though I kind of want there to be one... I'd love a BNW-style leap forward (though I don't know if it could happen, really)
