Xenoblade Chronicles X - Review Thread

The GameXplain video review was great, and long ~20 minutes. They praised the story and gave concrete details, not spoilers, why its good. Apparently it has some pretty major themes and you get to expeirence as much or as little of it as you choose to engage in it.

These reviewers slamming the story - remember they had to cram it down their throats for review in a short time span...

Some RPGs have mechanics where you lose either items or money when you die. WoW for example had you lose 10% of your gold.

I would assume the risk of losing the skell is a counterbalance.

I don't believe WoW has ever had a penalty as stiff as losing gold. You take durability damage to your weapons, that's it. It costs money to repair them, but you don't need to spend it immediately.

This should be posted in the OT but I will save that post so I won't have to repeat it, lol XD

Thanks for the feedback. Probably not for the traditional JRPG fan then.
I'm a traditional JRPG fan, really like games like FFVII, Golden Suns, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound etc. but still like Xenoblade even more than those. Didn't know that'd happen, but it did. I think the game reminded me a bit of Secret of Mana in a way that it's basically real time, but you still can't just smash a button to attack. And Secret of Mana is one of the best RPGs ever IMO.

Otero is easily IGN's best reviewer. I don't know why you people hate on him so much. He actually internally fought for the Splatoon re-review that people asked for.

I like Otero too. I don't think XenoX is his kind of game, so I think he'll give it a relatively low score (like seven), but a man is entitled to his opinions, right? I trust his review will be fair.

He still hasn't found a Skell, he thinks it's up Death Mountain.

It took him a while, but he actually found it a few days ago ^_^

The combat in xenoblade is still somewhat menu based but with real time cool downs and positioning rather than turn based. Still feels very jrpgish.

There's no button mashing. The basic attack comes out automatically at regular intervals and you do all of the damage and healing and comboing based on the timing of you special attacks which are chosen from a menu.

Some of the complaints such as the lifeless protagonist have little to do with rushing through the story and instead is a larger structural issue.

Your lost I guess

Not really when it doesn't seem like the game for me.

I wanted a traditional RPG but they decided to try new things with this one but which is great IMO but stuff like compulsory boring collectable quests to continue the story and not getting the mechs until half way through the story is crazy I think

Don't you also get less XP if you use a Spirit Healer?

If you use the Spirit Healer, you get a huge penalty to your stats for like, 10 minutes, which is a pain in the ass. But no XP loss or anything.

Getting rid of shitty death penalties was a huge part of what made WoW appealing compared to its competition, IMO.

Man am I excited for this one to come out. And depending on how my week goes I might not even get to start it for awhile but that is ok, it will be there for me when I am ready.

Got mine pre-ordered from Amazon with the hardcover strat guide to go with it. I want to explore every nook and cranny and see all this beautiful beast has to offer.

Dang. So it seems like the concensus is that the quests are repetitive? Was hoping that the gameplay would be more compelling than what the reviews I've read are saying...

Now I'm seeing more 9's than I thought I would. O_O

Sounds like folks who've played this game are pretty impressed, despite the shortcomings in comparison to the original Xenoblade.

You've 4 types of sidequests :

- Affinity quests : which will bring depth to the story, lore and characters
- Fetch quests : to make money fast
- division quests : depending of the guild you choose to side with you will be ble to access different reward as equipements/skills.items
- squad quest : 4 party players quests to go kill some big badies.

Affinity quests are the most important since you can even ruin the life of an npc if you handled it badly, lol
But yes, like in any other game, you kill monster, get the loot or just find the loot mechanic.
There is no revolution here.

But what you've to keep in mind is that the game will always reward you.
You're not doing those quests just for the sake of it.
That's what Jim liked.

It’s a game that understands the importance of rewarding players for their personal investment, and it makes sure that, no matter how convoluted its design, no matter how lengthy its tangential content, the payoff is always worth the time and effort.

Edit : thanks TheMoon

When I played the first Xenoblade on 3DS it didn't really grab me as much as I thought it would. Strange, cuz I like most JRPGS. I honestly think the muddy graphics had a lot to do with it. I don't usually sweat visuals too much, but for whatever reason the way the game looked turned me off.

This game though, I think I want it.

Kizuna Quests = Affinity Quests

Huh! The squad stuff is actually pretty cool! Kind of a "passive-multiplayer"... where you are always in a "lobby" of 32 players, and you are working together on a common goal, able to put found loot up for roll, able to message each other, and even take someone into your party as an NPC.

Very unique and VERY nice!! I like that it is passive instead of active because it puts things completely on my own terms. I don't need to keep a schedule with anyone to play together, I don't need to worry about another player sucking, etc.

I'm actually VERY excited for the multiplayer component now...

Edit: Still reading, Squad Missions are basically 4-real player Raid activities, that you can unlock by completing squad tasks. And being able to choose if you want to be in a passive squad, or active squad when you log in is great too. It's whatever I am in the mood for.

LOVING THIS

Nah. I think the decision to give you a mech later in the game is one of the smarter choices. Assuming this is how it works, after the player has explored all they can horizontally, giving them a suit and opening the rest of the world on a vertical scale is super cool.

One problem i had with xenoblade is that after about 40 hours the fatigue started settling in even after rotating through all playable characters. From what i hear getting the mech is a pretty major event and will hopefully help keep the experience fresh.

I've read that the affinity quests are highlights of the gameplay and the dialogue. Haven't seen much negativity towards the questing in the reviews.

Only complaint I'm really seeing widely is that the systems of the game are fairly complicated and take a while to learn.

I like how Nintendo World Report and Nintendo World are both in the op ;).

Yeah I think this game will have a better sense of gameplay variety and progression thanks to mechs and how they're handled. Getting at least a boat or something would've been really nice in Eryth Sea.

The thing is, this game plays more like Monster Hunter. The fan of those games don't really play for the story they play for the hunt & gear. I cannot wait to try to get the gear set from that lvl 99 dragon with a team of 4.

Getting XBX is like getting a Monster Hunter game with a more MMO'est type of combat, with less loading times and more Open World :)

It's intriguing to see how dismissive a large contingent on GAF was on this game based upon a few import impressions. It always seemed odd to me how every XCX had a discussion on how disappointing the game was. I really didn't understand it and I still don't.
