Xenoblade |OT| Sorry I Kept You Waiting!

Sorry for the double but I just randomly unlocked another skill tree for Dunban just by doing a random sidequest in Valak Mountain. Was this attached to the quest itself or did something else trigger it?

all the characters unlock skill trees by completing certain quests, for those quests you'll have to have the character at the lead of the party so it should be fairly obvious which one it is

I've had a playthrough of this game going for probably a little over a year and a half, and I had left my playthrough off at about 22 hours in. Finally started playing again a couple days ago and now I'm 30 hours in.

I wasn't really too crazy about the game before, but I am finding it more enjoyable now that the story is picking up some, and more importantly, I've (with the help of the internet) found a party that makes all the battles recently manageable without having to grind (they probably were before and I just suck; I've never really played an RPG similar to this).

I'm still not quite seeing what the hype is about with this game, but I've had a good feeling if I stuck with it long enough it would eventually click with me. I feel it has now, and hopefully it keeps improving and I'll understand the hype better by the end.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure I know who the last party member is from a Google search suggestion (I let my guard down once and that happens...) and an interface spoiler, but I'm not as upset about that spoiler as I normally am.

Unfortunately, my timing was kind of bad to start playing this game again since Persona Q is releasing this week. I have no idea how I'll juggle these two games.

I've dropped this game pretty hard myself. I'm up to around 14 hours but then started binging on Hearthstone. Was enjoying myself thouroughly the whole way through though.

I find it hard to focus on RPG's nowadays. Too many other games demand way too much time to get the full experience, like Hearthstone. Plus I just got into the Heroes of the Storm Alpha so I'm not sure when I can ever pick this back up...

Late game spoiler (I'm level 68):

Any tips for fighting
Gadolt?
I forget the name of the attack, but the attack that does a shit ton of damage and hits everyone regardless of how far away they are from it is destroying me. I've tried a few different parties, and I've had some decent results with Shulk and his shield art, but that finally didn't work out.

Is the attack I mentioned considered Ether damage? If so I'll throw some gems on my characters to defend against that.

Did you get Monado Armor? It's extremely good for stuff like that.

I heard about it when I was trying to find tips for the boss last night, but I don't know where it is, and I was a bit afraid of running into spoilers if I kept looking around.

I'll look it up later I suppose.

Thanks.

It's a sidequest reward from the last quest hub (well, the last significant one). It requires you to raise your affinity in that area a little first, but the quest giver is one of the NPCs that hangs out right outside town.

isn't he at the last place with optional quests at all? :p

I don't think the Monado Armor sidequest chain has spoilers attached, does it?

Unless you count locations as spoilers, then it doesn't have any spoilers attached. It's just two simple fetch or hunting quests I think, don't remember which.

And yeah, he's at the last one, but there are only like 6 quests there so it's not really a significant quest hub.

I did not get Monado Armor, hoping it doesn't end up hurting me in the end. Last weekend I was able to push the story a bit more I am currently
fighting a large dragon in the hall of silence
. Getting beat up bad, but I'm only lv73-74, so might be worth spending some time leveling. Maybe I'll go back for it, assuming I can.

Agniratha's 14 quests are totally required if you want to fill out the map though :p

Actually the high level kinda helped considering the
mid bosses guarding the seals
.

Whichever one had the circling midboss in the sky was a pain in the ass: I killed it once but was blindsided at the top when I had to kill one of those stupid sky lizards, so I had to redo everything. I ended up rushing it with 20% detection reduction and just kill the thing at the top.

how much longer do I have left? I'm already at 80ish hours and am just looking to blaze through the story since the 3DS version is gonna come out eventually anyway and I need to move on to other games.

Uhh... quite a while still, actually. I think there's about
5 more
areas left before the final boss? You're definitely taking your time compared to some people :p

I'm just at over 100 hours and just reached
Egil for the first time in Agniratha
, I've been doing every possible side quest and reconstruction upgrade I can do along the way, lol.

I like getting my mileage out of games :p. Though the only sidequests I'm working on now are the ones that give skill trees.

I was doing this but most of the side quests have just been fetch this and kill that and I really just want to move on. I will still work on Colony 6 quests and the skill tree ones though.

One plus side of doing all the sidequests is that I have like 2 million gold and my Dunban is an utterly unkillable monster.

So I'm assuming I'm in the end game now, just finished through
Mechonis Core and the initial bit at Colony 6 with Dickson and Alvis
.

Quick story question. If this is answered later in the plot, just say that and I can wait.

If Zanza was really slumbering in Shulk this whole time, who was Arglas/Zanza trapped in Prison Island? Was he simultaneously Zanza? Or just a portion of Zanza powered down, with the other part trapped in the Monado and eventually transferred over to Shulk?

Simultaneous. The Monado is an extension of Zanza, and he was essentially sealed within two places, one was within Arglas, who was sealed in Prison Island, and the other was the Monado which was sealed in the tower. Kid Shulk touched the Monado in the tower which allowed Zanza, in part, to "escape" within Shulk. His power was still limited/locked due to the seal at Prison Island though.

I guess the idea was that if they sealed the Monado separate from the rest of Zanza it would be harder for him to be brought back. So much for that.

tl;dr version: shit's complicated man

random tangent: I love how video game bosses never set out to defeat the protagonists themselves until it's too late

I almost mentioned that, but that was a little more justified in that Mother 3 had been released for some time in Japan and there were never any plans to re-release it or localize it for other regions, nor were there ever any plans for more sequels. There was a fan translation in progress, but that's outside Nintendo. They'll be pushing the Xenoblade series heavily next year with the two big releases and hoping for Smash 4 to generate interest in them. Needlessly spoiling the game that's supposed to be pushing New 3DS sales makes no sense whatsoever.

NEEDLESSLY spoiling. It's not like they had this amazing idea for a cutscene and boss in Smash 4 and had to spoil some of Xenoblade to do it. It's just a few trophies out of like 700.

I don't know. I feel like the amount of people who:

have not yet played Xenoblade
would be really upset about getting story details spoiled
and
pay very close attention to trophies in Smash Bros.

is a pretty small group of people. I don't really think everyone is going to be going through all of the trophies, memorizing every little detail related to plots of games they haven't played, and then remembering that when they actually play Xenoblade.

You only have to see a trophy in the shop or results box for example to get spoiled, and if you're looking forward to Xenoblade 3DS it wouldn't be strange to check the trophies you have for the series in the gallery. Lots of people get annoyed at spoilers in story-centric games too.

I wasn't even spoiled by it--the GameFAQs board took care of that long ago when I had a question about the sidequests--but it's really a kind of a dick move for no reason at all.

Oh cool, found this thread. :)

My GameStop is apparently awesome. I found another copy of this and bought it so I could play it (sold my Wii U months and months ago and re-bought one a short while back). I have never played beyond the first few hours of this game, so it's pretty magical to be able to experience without knowing the story or what to expect. HUGE game that is blowing my mind.

I DID have a few questions though...

I just discovered [SPOILERS]Colony 6[/SPOILERS] and am entering the mines now. However, I'm closing in on the 13 hour mark and level 22. I feel over leveled but also overwhelmed by the number of sidequests. I have done all but like, 4 right now (the timed ones with enemies I have to find...they are annoying as hell). Is there any reason to really focus on doing all of the sidequests like I am?

Also, is there a good FAQ on how to gear up each character? Every time I buy gear or start equiping the stuff I have found or whatever, I have NO idea what I'm doing. I just sort of guess on all my gear and gems. I know gems don't matter too much early, but if I decide to take on the superbosses or whatever later on, I will be clueless. That's a LONG ways off (this game feels super long), but I figure I should start reading/learning a bit about that system now.

Overall, this game is blowing me away. I haven't really played an RPG to the extent that I am this since...Uh...Replaying Mother 2 I guess. I am genuinely interested in the story and the characters. I am making DAMN sure to not read a single spoiler or watch any videos on YouTube of anything because I don't want to know what happens (or even be hinted at it).

No, there's no reason to do all the sidequests unless you're a completionist. You'll most likely burn out on them if you do. Named NPCs generally give better rewards, if you want a logical way to divide them. Also, if you just accept every quest you find you'll end up fulfilling a lot of the simpler ones automatically on your travels.

Alright, thanks.

Are there any that are "must do" because of the items they provide? Or will I be able to complete the super bosses without much quest grinding?

There are a few important later ones that
unlock extra skill trees.
You probably want to look those up specifically once you get a lot farther into the game.

There're series of quests that
unlock skill trees
, a few of them requires
high area affinity
to trigger. Also some quests to
unlock bonus monado arts
. Those are what you'll need for super bosses.

I wonder how many people here got
Monapon
for
Riki
?

Welp just finished the game and beat the final boss.

That ending though.

So basically Shulk becomes god and gives it up to let people do what they want pretty neat ending. Alvis being a computer AI was kinda out of nowehere. Also, wtf Fiora got her organic body back?! I guess since Shulk was a god he could give his girlfriend an organic body without any issue.

I know that Xenoblade X is supposed to be a spiritual successor but I do hope we get to see some cameos or references to the original cast.

I was highly skeptical of people saying that is one the best JRPGs of last gen but man I was quite wrong to believe otherwise. The exploration, the combat, the likable characters. It was all done so well.

My only 2 gripes with the game was that even though there was so much content most of it was in the form of lousy sidequests which involved killing this or fetching that it just felt so mundane. I had to just drop all sidequests and move on with the story otherwise I was going to burn out on the main game. Another gripe was the grinding for materials and locking skill trees behind these mundane sidequests.

Aside from all that though, I would highly recommend this game and would personally place it as one of my top 2 favorite JRPGs. The other being Tales of Vesperia.

Now, I sit and wait for Xenoblade chronicles which looks more and more amazing with ever teaser we get :D.

I'd like to play this game, but haven't been able to find it anywhere in Canada for a decent price. Any recommendations? Worse comes to worst I'll have to upgrade to a New 3DS and play it on handheld when it releases.

Yea I had to buy mine from my local Gamestop for $55 USD. You're going to be waiting for awhile as the new 3DS hasn't been given a release date for US and the port for Xenoblade wasn't even announced for US audiences.

Man, I hope the story keeps delivering.

I just killed Xord and saw the cutscene with Shulk dismembering Metal Face. There were new characters, a whole bunch of confusing talk about the Emperor, and what APPEARED to be someone or something inside Metal Face when Shulk destroyed the armor. Don't tell me if I'm right or wrong, but that will be a game changer.

I am loving this game. I'm now 16 hours in and my party is level 26. I need to find a spoiler-free guide on getting
all the 4th skill trees
to make sure I don't skip or miss a necessary quest or item or something nutty.

I bought mine from Amazon for $60 a few months back. After I first played the game last spring and priced it because I wanted to own it so badly, it was going for $150 used (!!!). So at least it's better than that now.
