Xenoblade X (Cross) releasing in 2015 (Xenoblade Chronicles X in the US)

Seriously at the "westernization"? Xeno is what it is, trying to change it's identity will alienate the fans(the bread and butter of the series) and make it something that it isn't. Look at how "westernization" worked out for other companies like Capcom and Konami. Fuck that business.

Oh and see how Xenosaga Episode 2's "westernization" worked out for Namco too, "Westernization" of Japanese games never worked and only decreased their popularity in the long run if anything. What a stupid idea. These are Japanese RPG's, complaining about them being too "Japanese" is beyond ridiculous.

Whatever happened to artistic integrity..

You're going to have to source this, because none of the interviews ever have him saying this. He's expressed frustration with all of his stories because there's always some kind of limitation preventing him from writing what he wants to write. Nowhere does it state that he thinks poorly of what was done in Xenoblade; this is projection on your part.

In fact, he sees that his old writing style has reached a dead end and has adopted one that has his writing accommodate a gameplay-first philosophy.

By changing the art direction and making it more western friendly?Or the gameplay?

Sorry it's just the confrontational way I communicate, but not taking it personally. It just seems contradictory to want something Japanese, but less Japanese to make it do better. You suggest not tossing away its essence, but how does one do that when there are suggestions that losing some of the essential 'anime' style will make it more commercially viable in the West? Just trying to understand logic.

Oh yeah, there's that. Probably a single-planet story then. It's.. Well tbh, it's not nearly as interesting a premise as Xenoblade's and I'd love planetary traveling, but I'm sure it's still going to be epic beyond belief.

JRPGs are a combination of things to me, and stupid looking anime faces is a very minor thing in my opinion. Just making the faces look better wouldn't be westernization in my opinion, but whatever

e: make them look like tales of characters, they're anime as heck but way better looking than the faces we have now
 
I'll be disappointed if we get run of the mill standard American dubbing.
The British voice acting for Xenoblade was fantastic, a complete breath of fresh air in the JRPG genre.

Well personally i prefer X's character faces than those from Tales games (with the exception of Zestiria which looks to me like a big improvement from previous Tales character designs)

And anyway i don't think going from the current character faces to Tales-like faces would have helped the game's sales.

In that case we're talking about different things - there are many anime styles and you're wanting a different one, whereas I was sort of gobsmacked people wouldn't want anime faces in general.

I'm fine with this style though, it's a more classic anime which is what I grew up with and I like :)

As somebody said earlier, I'm not sure that will work with this game. They are supposed to be from the United States. That being said, hope they ignore this and go with the British dubbing because I loved it in Xenoblade and American dubbing seems so plain and boring in comparison.

Edit: Though it is entirely possible there are other nations on the planet so it may only be the starting characters that are American. The main isn't likely to talk so yeah.

Probably not. I like them better but hey, opinions opinions. Like I earlier said, the current faces will take a bit to get used to but after a while, I'm gonna be perfectly fine with them. Had zero problems with Xenosaga, after all.

I should replay it and the other two episodes soon tbh.

Looks great though. I still like Xenoblade's areas better cause they were more colorful and thus nicer looking, but this looks fantastic too. Can't wait to explore the shit out of this planet!

Tales? Are you serious? I agree that Xeno series have mediocre character design in general, but tales design are generic as hell and they do not appeal to general western audience. And I say this as someone who play tales since the PS era.
 
The digital event trailer underwhelmed me, but the Treehouse demo got me hyped back up. It looks like the new Xenoblade is going to be awesome.

Simple. Trailers are what sell games to many people, so simply put out competent and appealing trailers.

Even die hard fans were questioning this trailer. There are games companies that put out amazing trailers for games that then dont see the light of day for years (XV, TLG) they do such a good job of grabbing attention that they keep people invested in the game for years.

What? Yes I'm fucking serious. I'm not talking about character design here, I'm literally talking about how their faces look. The style, the graphics, whatever. XBX has these weird dolls whereas the Tales faces are like blobs of flesh with eyes and mouth drawn on, which I like more.

I also like the Tales character designs better, generic or not, but that's not for this thread.

It's almost as if they weren't ready to show the trailer but they had to rush something out. It wasn't polished, it really seemed like a mess to me. So, holiday 2015 at the absolute earliest with a possible, but hopefully not, 2016 delay is what I am thinking unfortunately.
 
I agree they could have done a better job with the trailer and what they chose to highlight for the press and general audiences. Personally as a fan of the Xeno- series it was great to see that the game would have an over-the-top story featuring space battle cutscenes and an assortment of characters, but if you're not familiar with the games and this is your first time seeing anything about it (at E3, no less), you're probably going to think it's some random game with lots of nonsensical dialogue and okay but not amazing cutscene graphics.

Xenoblade was one of the most beautiful games on the Wii, but its cutscene graphics seriously lack "wow" power compared to other games because they're all in-engine, and the character models (especially the faces!) aren't ridiculously high-poly with detailed textures - they're serviceable and sometimes "good", but it's the game's environments and their sheer scale that impress the most.

I think they could have mixed in more shots of actual gameplay showing off new areas or the massive scale of monsters / creatures, and that would have given people more of a sense of what the game was about, and calmed people's fears about a "downgrade".
 
I skimmed over the treehouse demo.

-the graphics look good. a lot better than the story trailer it seems.
-the battle system looks very similar to xenoblade, which I guess is not a bad thing.Wanted to see more melee focused battle with bigger swords.
-I liked that it has more sci-fi feel compared to xenoblade. It feels more similar to xenosaga series, which is great.
-the character model is ok. Obviously huge improvement from xenoblade but the face could be better.
-I don't like the customizable main character. It really feels lifeless and I wonder how it will turn out in story cutscenes.

I have yet to complete xenoblade but this is definitely one of the titles that makes me want to purchase Wii U. I really hope it has more story element than xenoblade.
 
I'm hoping we get to see more mech action and maybe more free roaming. Show us what the limitations are to exploring this game, Nintendo! Can I go to a high mountain off in the distance? Can you swim underwater?

Also... I'd love to see some other different looking environments. I'm curious just to see how big this world actually is. And for last... if there's a multiplayer component to X.

I'm actually glad they are not showing different areas, I want it to be a surprise going it like it was for me with Xenoblade. That being said, maybe one other area that has lots of color for those that keep complaining about it, and I kind of agree with them to a point since Xenoblade was so beautiful with colors.

Looks like we got some misinterpretation here... I apologize.

Back to the topic, Monolith soft has never been good at face animation, so I think the weird & lifeless look was due to their skill rather than the style. And I believe that tales style would not fit the game well because of the (relatively) more " realistic" look of the setting.

I dont think its unpolished. It just was poorly directed and too narrow with its focus.

Fuck, I will lead marketing stategies for this game for as little as 30k a year +bonuses. If a Nintendo rep is reading this PM me dawg.

Good point, actually. At least one new area is good enough for me because I know Xenoblade for its color. I'd still like the rest of my questions on on my wishlist answered though...
 
You guys complaining about how the graphics look shittier now really don't know what your talking about. The characters look the same as the dude they showed in the first trailer (face shot) which in turn looks exactly like the original xenoblade character style (big googly eyes).

If you don't like the original xenoblade characters then fine, but you can't complain about these higher res versions if you were already a fan of the original game. Also the art in general hasn't changed at all. Go back and actually LOOK at the previous trailers.

The texture quality and model detail is exactly the same. Especially the second trailer with the dude walking through the mech hangar at the start. The mechs textures are muddy, the dudes hand textures are muddy. A lot of stuff is kind of muddy and always has been kind of muddy. That isn't to say the game doesn't look fantastic because it DOES! The amount of detail going into such a gigantic world is amazing. Also The newest trailer looks to be all in game (even the crazy space opening) so calm down people. Play the game and enjoy it.
 
So what is the general consensus after the Treehouse stream? Is the disappointment from the 2 previous trailers generally dissolved? I am excited for the game either way (despite horribly funny character models), and I think it still looks like we are eventually getting what we were shown at that very first hype trailer.
 
Game looks good enough to me from the Treehouse video. Not technically impressive, but attractive (except for those character models, wtf) and with really nice draw distance.

I never got around to trying Xenoblade, but superficially, the combat looks more or less the same general MMO-lite fare? I mean, the whole thing looks a lot more interesting to me than I anticipated. Maybe I'm just more interested now that I have a WiiU.
 
I thought the general style of the character faces in the trailer were a marked improvement over Xenoblade - especially with the male faces, you could see a bit more "structure" (brows, noses, etc.) which reminded me of the art-style of Xenogears and Xenosaga 3 especially. I liked the Xenoblade character designs too, but a lot of times it seemed like they were painted on flat faces.

I'm not a huge fan of the female character faces, even though I think they're okay; of the ones we've seen (e.g. Elma) it still seems like a generally flat surface with a tiny nose poking out - but I feel like the same can be said of many female character designs, in anime and beyond.

Yeah, why does the world look so brown and grey? Has it been explained? Or is it just an attempt to appeal to western gamers who hate color?

The rich colors was one of things that made Xenobalde so beautiful.

Well we have only seen one section of the game. We have yet to see the whole world of this game.
