Xenoblade X Eurogamer Preview: Maybe 2015's Most Impressive Open World

USBs still cannot handle the amount of total read/writes that an HDD can, though technology has improved greatly in that regard. It is just a little unsafe and is not recommended by Nintendo, just like Y-cable attachments are (what I use btw).

The only officially recommended combination is a HDD with an external power source.

Cheaper USB Flash drives tend to be unbelievably crappy. They tend to not handle random reads/writes well and can often wear out quicker than they should. A good enough Flash drive would be fine in theory, but figuring out where to draw the line is difficult.

Thanks for the info. I can live with that sort of risk.

Don't particularly feel like adding it to the op because I've never heard of the site before, but in case people are starving for more impressions.

And just as I find that, the next part of the Gamexplain Q&A goes up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFJfl6AhEs0

Sounds like the inventory is much bigger than the original's, thankfully. You can hold 99 of each item.

In order to change time you need to go to a place you can sleep, ala Skyward Sword I guess. But there isn't as much need to change time apparently?

Not really sure why they changed that honestly, but as long as it isn't that big of an issue (like time doesn't matter that much), I'm not complaining about it.

I would guess it's for immersion's sake. Like not wanting enemies and NPCs to fade in and out of existence when you change the clock, or maybe it's a performance thing but I doubt that.

I prefer the convenience of having the option to do it anywhere, anytime. Hopefully finding NPCs doesn't get too difficult.

By the sound of the Q&As and the previews...

...I think i'm going to leave NeoGAF until i'm done with this game (like 2-4 months by the sound of it) to get a feel and fresh experience with it haha.

I hope their ain't Missables like XC had. Like the Affinity Chart which could not be completed after certain points and if you said the wrong thing to people.

On the Gamexplain Q&A, they said both Derrick and Chuggaa have not encountered any missables after 50 hours of gameplay. Take that as you will.

Speaking of the Q&A, part 3 is up:

GameXplain never noticed any timed missions after playing for 40+hours

I don't think that the negative Japanese reception even exist. Both famitsu and dengeki gave the game a positive review so i don't know what the hell these people are taking about. As others have mention, there was the kotaku import preview which was not very positive but that doesn't explain why some people think that it was poorly receive in Japan. As for import reception, dual shockers and nintendo world report both wrote imports reviews which are extremely positive.

So yeah, i have no freaking idea why people started saying that. It's very odd.

Mainly because the mentioned Kotaku article and two or three very vocal "import reviewers" here at NeoGAF and GameFAQs that put the game in a very very negative light so all the other positive impressions (japanese media, japanese players, the majority of import players) were kinda forgotten.

I'm still not even sure why the Kotaku preview got so much traction. Didn't the writer also hate the first Xenoblade?

Really interesting to see how people form narratives in their heads based off unreliable memories or hearsay.

I mean, the preview article is getting called click bait now.

"Xenoblade Chronicles X: The Kotaku Import Preview"

Man, what a villain! Must be trying to slander Xenoblade Chronicles X for clicks with a title like that, am I right?

Nevermind that the "boring" part didn't even appear until the author's closing comments and that the majority of the text is spent matter-of-factly describing the game.

From what I saw around here at least, Bebpo's review of the game also helped kill a lot of the buzz.

Which was strange because Bebpo didn't even say the game was bad; basically just "good not great". And just in general it's so rare to see a game that everybody is head over heels in love with that it gets near unanimous praise; of course there were gonna be some people that either didn't like the game or would like but not love it.

Anyhoo, can't wait, but I'm gonna probably wait until I finish this semester before I start it. A timesink like this would be the last thing I need with finals on the way.

Yeah, it wasn't clickbait. It's just that people took the opinion of one man way too seriously. No matter the game, somebody isn't going to like it

Xenoblade is one of those universal praise kind of games. we aren't used to hearing negative things about it, I guess.

just two more weeks!

And even then the guy played it for 70+ hours and praised the world and its scenery. "Liking" a game isn't always so black and white.

What the hell is "bebpo"?

There were some negative impressions for Xenoblade Chronicles though, and the Japanese import impressions for the game were not as positive as threads for the game have become since it came out in english.

I think it's just that, over time, if the game doesn't sort of develop a "hatedom" that some games like Skyrim for some reason have, the negative voices stop caring and move away, and thus we mostly only hear positive impressions.

Nah. I read people calling its combat and quest design garbage all the time. Story wasn't universally loved either.

It does have a rabid fanbase though.

I do get annoyed when people call the combat garbage. Substantially better than most JRPGs I've played. And I would include some sacred cows in that group, FWIW...

OTOH, I do not get annoyed when people call XB's quest design garbage, because it is.

Why on Earth would people base their hype on the opinion of some random dude?
You dun goofed, GAF.

Well, to you, he may be just "some random dude," probably because you had never heard of him until a couple of posts back in this thraed.

To the guy who claimed to have had his buzz killed and knew Bebpo by name, perhaps he isn't just some random dude, but is someone who is worth listening to. Even if that were not true, perhaps the content of said post contained objective information about the game that was enough to kill his buzz. It's hard to say.

I trust no reviews.

I don't go in expecting the greatest game ever.

I go in expecting nothing.

Yeah, and it's two-three impressions on which the impressions were formed.

There were equally positive impressions, such as it winning the Paris award for best RPG, getting 9 from Nintendo World Report, 9.5 from DualShockers, and Dengeki called it "limitless fun".

Dengeki even called it "One of the most complete RPG Masterpieces ever made".

I've asked a few times in other threads, but has anyone been able to source this quote? Googling turns up nothing, and the only online impressions piece on Dengeki about the game certainly contains no such quote in regards to XenobladeX.

http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/001/040/1040729/

Now, this article does contain something close to that English in the opening paragraph.

This is talking about the original Xenoblade, though.

The gaf translation doesn't mention it, but they do call X "limitless fun."

I checked the Google doc, and it's the same as the text here:

http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/001/040/1040729/

So, yeah, I don't think Dengeki ever said anything along the lines of "most complete RPG Masterpieces ever made" in regards to XenobladeX. Something close was said about the original game, however.

They do highly praise the game for its massive world in which the player can freely engage in a massive variety of things. That's the context behind what was translated as "limitless fun" in that thread.

Oh, my bad, i got that quote from a translator an IGN forum; should have checked myself first. Will edit.

Maybe you're right, but my memory of Xenoblade was in line with this thread:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=422089

Xenoblade had some pretty positive hype leading up to the EU release.

Yeah, Xenoblade scored really high on mk2. I just mean in terms of gaf I read a lot of mixed opinions.

But there is some pretty positive hype coming from the western press this time around. Hopefully that'll continue when reviews start popping up.

It still sounds ridiculous to let one dude cloud your opinion or change your perception of the game. The smartest thing would have been to wait to get a better consensus when a lot more people have played it. A lot of the things I'm reading about X mention that it has amazing gameplay, breathtaking vistas, insane amounts of content. Now why on Earth would I listen to one dude when other people are reporting extremely glowing impressions? On top of that, this is a trusted developer who already proved themselves with their previous game. If the past game was awesome, there's a good chance the new one will be too.

Like Reyn would have said, what a bunch of jokers.

I already explained that it could simply be a case that the poster in question trusts Bebpo's opinion. Bebpo has been around for a long time on NeoGAF, so it's not out of the question.

No idea why you would value an aggregate score or whatever you meant by "consensus" over the opinion of someone you trust or tend to agree with.

For consensus I mean what a bunch of people are saying. Like, considerably more than just one. I don't care at all for metacritic scores or things like that.

The general impression from the import thread was that it was a solid game, but the original was better.

somehow this telephoned into "the game was a disappointment"

The polygon video got my hyped and it wasn't for a flashy reason. It's because it's the first video where I saw someone running around NLA talking to NPCs. I always do that in RPGs because I like the way that the characters' little comments build the world's atmosphere.

Seeing NPC's talk about the fickle weather in Primordia or how another character was attacked by a monster disguised as a flower and how she's now a nervous wreck pulled me in and made me want to play. I just really like random stuff that fleshes out the game work and XBCX seems to have a ton of it.

Also, I loved Xenoblade but it often made things difficult for me by combining a linear story that made me want to push forward with tons of area quests that I wanted to complete before moving on. I gave up at Eryth Sea because the story was heating up, the area was HUGE and somewhat hard to navigate and so many quests had the clock icon.

That's ridiculous. Ocarina of Time might be considered better than Majora's Mask. But that doesn't make the later any less of an amazing game on its own.
