Bah, so they wont use RX100 sensor....
Sensor-Sizes.png

Its actually not that bad of an idea. It will keep the phone in"normal" shape and force Samsung use a similar sized sensor on the S5.

The thing about the 808 was that the camera was so high spec and expensive it didn't ignite any smartphone "camera war".

Samsung won't be able to match it though, because Sony won't be selling this sensor for at least another year, so basically if you want the best camera performance on Android or iOS you have to go for Z1.

until sony fucks up Z1 camera software...?
the early previews i read says the camera takes so-so pictures.
the phone is about 190 gram and battery life is not so good even with the 3000mah.
the ah-ips screen is not as good as Z Ultra.
I dont know, l love the Z1 form and specs, but it seems Sony is not hitting the right base again...same old story?

I hope this is not true. Its either this or the LG G2 for me........or wait for the next Nexus device.

The phone hasn't even been announced yet, all of those previews are coming from prototype devices.

Most of the P&S today have the same sized 1/2.3" sensor. Samsung can easily source it some where else.

i am sure they will also sell it to Samsung and LG and Apple... they make nice money doing so, Sony has >30% of the market for phone camera sensors.

I dont think anyone else makes-ships 1/2.3" sensor for phones, not the same sensor as for regular camera...

Is $759 MSRP normal for most flagship smartphone releases? It seems a bit hefty...

It's the Sony Tax.

Most flagships ring in at 600-700 tops. Bought my HTC One for $580 when it first came out.

That being said, depending on how Apple delivers with the 5S, looks like I'll be switching phones in September/October

I really don't care who make money on that camera module, I will buy whichever android phone that offer the best IQ.

The smartphones are taking over all "small size" P&S, this is where the market is going.

I miss the days when there wasn't a choice for smartphone. I'm tearing my hairs out between this, the new Moto X, and the Lumia 1020.

I'm not big into imagining sensors but from what I gather this will be THE sensor to have and it won't be available to others until Z2 ships. It's a Sony G Lens, specifically developed by the imagining division for the smartphone.

When did Sony fuck up any phone's camera software? Because it actually improved it with Z. The early previews didn't have a final build software and were talking abouta prototype unit. The screen will be as good if not better than Z Ultra. You've read one story from a russian guy that got his hands on with a prototype device. Call yourself and wait for the phone to be announced next week.

This phone looks so boring to me. There's nothing outstanding about the design whatsoever, just like Sony's past 3 phones. It's the epitome of what people complain about in the smartphone world nowadays. A black rectangle with no redeeming features.

It's certainly far from ugly, but it's just...I dunno...unremarkable.

I just hope it feels better in the hand compared to the Z, it looked nice but the ergonomics were awful. Not sure how that wasn't picked up in testing

Lol cmon. It's not even really debatable. The Z1 is head and shoulders above both the Moto X and 1020 unless you're looking for the great camera in the 1020 and giving up pretty much every app out there for it.

My contract with Verizon is up in October. I'm on the iPhone 4S now, but heavily considering jumping to Android. I'll see what Apple has in store for their next flagship device as well as how the release version of iOS 7 performs, but this Sony phone is looking nice.

How does it compare to the HTC one? It's fucking beautiful.

Power wise it'll be considerably faster than the HTC One. Display wise, if it's anything like the Xperia Z Ultra then it should be easily comparable to the HTC One. Sound wise Sony are apparently going with a new speaker design, so we'll have to wait for impressions on that. Beyond that the only other thing you might prefer with the HTC One is that it'll be a bit smaller and have a metal body. Plus there's Sense, if you like their UI.

The Z1 will have water, dust and apparently shock resistance. It should have a far superior camera and a dedicated camera shutter key. It'll also have a far larger battery, but we'll have to see how that translates into actual runtime. There's also expandable memory to consider. Overall given what we know and what's likely to happen, this should crush the HTC One quite nicely.

EDIT.
Here's a comparison between the HTC One and the Xperia Z Ultra. It might give you a rough idea of what to expect from the Z1

I think the term you're looking for is elegant :)

It's a simplistic, yet full of features and is extremely powerful. IMO it'll be very difficult to find a clearly superior flagship until the 2014 devices hit.

Elegant is probably the last thing I'd call it. It's too squared off to be elegant.

However powerful, definitely, bit you'd expect that from a newer device.

What, squarish can't be elegant? It's a clean design with edges and sides rounded off enough so that the phone should be comfortable in the hand.

It's also noteworthy that Sony put the largest sensor in any Android phone into such a device with no camera hump and it only seems to be a couple of millimeters thicker than the Xperia Z.

Me? I think the best words for it would be classy and functional. It's a great looking phone and its ruggedness means you aren't foced to hide it behind a case to keep it safe. The other day my friend was bitching about how he had to double ziplock his Blackberry when on a boat trip to ensure it doesn't possibly get wet. Who needs to take such steps when you're phone is water resistant/proof?
