Ya know, Final Fantasy X doesn't deserve the hate

Anybody who says FFX sucks is an ass (cause you lack common sense).

Anybody who says FFX is overly difficult should stop playing videogames.

the final boss in FFX actually gave me some trouble. mostly cause i never level up in RPGs. FFX was the first RPG i've beaten in a rental

GOD, I hate that scene!
My major beef with the game. Ugh. The voice acting was really bad.
I don't fear the text box even in the age of the PS3 and XBox 360. :D
If your voice actors suck, DON'T USE 'EM!

I think whoever did Auron's voice did the best. When the game first starts and you're in Zanarkand after the Blitzball game is one example of this. He starts getting all retrospective and for some reason it demonstrates what sets him apart from literally every other voice actor in the game. That could have easily been in a movie.

beating a FF game in rental sure aint easy :)

eh tamanon, i dont really believe you. you didnt actually hate a squaresoft game, you are just saying that. heh.
anyway, battle system was fun, but i leveled up too much at the omega temple, so i was able to beat the final boss with one sword strike, even without any character modifications at that point. so i guess i didnt find the game difficult. even the omega weapon died after 3 strikes i believe.
aside from battle system, music and graphics, i didnt like the game, at all. it was mind numbingly dull, insipid and boring. i thought it was trash geared towards teenage girls.

FFX is awesome, and I don't even think it gets that much hate, other than some pretentious "gamers" on forums.

It's probably the most mainstream popular FF ever, behind FFVII. Especially with females.

Jesus I forgot how much the monsters start to ramp up on Mt Gagazet, should've taken the advice and grinded some before Seymour in Bevelle haha.

Fun game! I might have spent as much as 60 hours with it. Dunno.

The story often suuuuucked, though. The voice-acting was poor and I cringed during most of the cut-scenes.

I seriously hated on the game before it came out; the removal of ATB was an absolute crime, and the Sphere Grid looked rather stupid.

When I borrowed a PS2 and the game, I had an absolute blast, and played through the game about three times (twice unlocking all of the Monster Arena monsters for the people I borrowed the game and PS2 from).

After getting my JP PS2, I picked up the International version and enjoyed the hell out of it even more. I love in-game variety for characters, and the Expert Sphere Grid gave me just what I wanted, the ability to make any character how I wanted. The actual game itself is of course very one-way for the most part, but I don't mind at all with having my black mage Yuna whooping ass early into the game.

As an in-game kleptomaniac, I really liked how steals worked in the game. Also with a reward from stealing was making new customized weapons/armor earlier than you normally were supposed to. How CTB(?) was in FF10 kept the battles still on a fast pace just as if it was ATB. Very fun.

FF10 was a definite crow-eater for me, and I'll gladly admit that my first impressions were absolutely wrong for me. If anything, I do wish that X2's "skip cutscene" was in 10, though. The lack of a real world map, low amount of dungeons, and the insta-airship I didn't agree with, but they didn't detract from the game as much as I thought they would, in this game's case.

North America was robbed by the International version not being the Greatest Hits, though.

I fucking loved FFX. The Sphere Grid System just gave you so much freedom. Probably my favourite RPG this generation.

It's my favorite Final Fantasy game. It's also the first RPG I've played in Japanese, and the only one I've ever replayed (the NA version). I loved the battle system, liked the characters, and think that it pulled off the whole cinematic-RPG thing very well. Also, the voice acting, as flawed as it might've been in some cases, still made it better than if there was no voice acting.

The worlds were breathtaking and varied. The music, while not my favorite, was always appropriate. And the battle system is the most fun I've had in an RPG. The only real flaw was the crappy animation when the characters were talking (not during the cut-scenes).

I also actually liked the linearity of the game. You're supposed to be a stranger from another world who's tagging along wit ha group on a mission, so it only makes sense that you have no control over where you're going.

Miburou respect +1000

FF X is easily my favorite FF to date. Miburou's post covers most of the reasons I feel that way, including the bit about linearity - much of the game revolves around Yuna's ritual pilgrimage, so being constrained to that route enhanced the atmosphere of the game for me. I also loved the world of Spira, which was so well-realized as to be practically a character in its own right.

Another point I think is worth mentioning is the way the character dynamics shift throughout the game, particularly the other guardians' gradual acceptance of Tidus. All too often, movies and games fall into the same rut: New character joins established team, team members dislike and distrust 'the newbie', then a pivotal event occurs where the new character 'proves himself', after which, the rest of the team finally accepts the new character as 'one of the guys'. Rather than going this route, FF X gives us a close-knit group of friends who gradually come to think of the new guy as one of the gang. Watching that slow shift take place over the course of the adventure felt... real, for lack of a better word. It was one of the things about the game that left a strong lasting impression on me. :)

I dont believe it deserves hate. I dislike it yet I admire games that are of high quality and polish. Add the fact that millions enjoy this game and it is a part in one of the best and most recongizable series of all time, no hate from here.

Games like Delta Force:Black Hawk Down should have more hate. People on LIVE are in denial over this game.

Sure the game supports many players online...But the game has NO BULLET HOLES and the guns look like cardboard!

Sure the game has vehicles.....THAT MOVE AROUND THE MAP ON A CONVEYOR BELT!

Sure the game has voice chat....but you don't know when your talking or who is talking.

Sorry to put a game out of the genre in here, but to me this makes a big difference on deciding if the game is total crap or I just dislike it.

....oh, nevermind.

Sigh. I'm getting sick of that I knew it was a little off post so I underlined the pertaining information. I'll give you another example...

The Summoner vs. FFX.

Just the look, feel, system, expierence is vastly superior in FFX still if you hate both games. I was just trying to use that as an example, most recently DF:BHD came to mind after playing that filth last night.

the story is just so embarassingly bad, and poorly told, with cringeworthy va. this is one of those games that is so awful in that manner that screw being embarassed for others seeing it, i'm embarassed for myself playing it.

i can't get past a rpg that has that issue, their too narrative based. i can't imagine someone who's read a few books or liked decent films putting up with a game like this because it has some good interactive elements.

and the whole water volleyball side game is beyond dumb.

Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and blah blah blah. I never finished the game. Got to that big, open field near the end and then quit after getting lost in Skeeball or whatever the mini-game was. But that was around the time Madden became an obsession for me, so it's not really the fault of the game. I didn't like the story as much as 7's, but seeing as 7 and 10 were the only two FF's I've ever played, I'll give FFX a big thumbs up. Compared to other stuff I've played like DQ or BOF3, it's a great game. And it's even better than Wild Arms, which I thought was an incredible rpg. PEACE.

So you basically named those who play:
FF7 (as their first - a large chunk of new FF players in 1997)

FF4
FF5
FF6

Three FF's loved by a lot of SNES fans.

That's a LOT of people. Not as much of a minority as you may think. :lol

Musashi: consider it a lucky guess :lol

Diablos: Wasn't being serious but was implying gamers who like consoles not games. You know...all those "FFVI is the last good FF" gamers...all...2(?) of them

None of those statements are correct for me. I started the FF series on snes, and even though I am a nin fan, I loved the FF series to playstation 1. FFX jsut didn't do it for me, but I am hoping FFXII will. Too bad the wait is so long.

Wakune said:

Actually...I never gave FFX a chance because I was so turned off by how poor FF7 was (that and I didn't feel like buying another PS2)

I don't see how someone can say the story in FFX is "embarassing" and "poorly told" and then not dislike the story in previous FF games.

I couldn't stand FFX's linear world map, sphere grid sucked ass compared to junction system, music was meh, and the main character was even a bigger douche than Zidane.

The junction system is one of the most poorly thoughtout systems in FF ever.

I loved the Junction System, I *HATED* the drawing of magic, but at least you only had to do that for the first half or so....

Just made it to the outskirts of Zanarkand, I love the whole scene with Yuna's farewell sphere and the team just camping out together. Really makes you think that you've accomplished a long journey.....plus the fact that it ties into the opening, is just masterfully crafted.

BTW, Seymour in Gagazet was an absolute bitch:P

I've played all the FFs (Except 11) and 10 is one of my favorites, easily golden age (3-6) quality. I just hope FF12 continues that return to glory that FFX started.

I liked the materia system over the sphere grid (which pretty much forced you on a track). I would much prefer the fighting system from Vagrant Story though...*dodges fruit*. PEACE.

The Expert Sphere grid in the International/PAL version, really showed the potential of the system for balancing characters with set roles in battle, with the ability to customise them how the player wanted, and eventually create an-uber character, or make all your characters uber.

And for those saying they needed to level, there's a powering levelling trick in the monster arena that worked very well. I can't remember the exact details, but there were abilities that let you convert damage into AP, then into Exp, then you could add multipliers etc. you set this on one character, then have the other two characters set their overdrives to when that character received damage, stock up on phoenix downs, then fight Don Tonberry, making sure only your main character attacked. Don Tonberry's karma attack always does 99,999 damage which was then converted into that much exp, and by reviving the character (and casting haste on every as well) you could get quite a few hits in, before running away and receiving a butt load of exp. I think the most I ever managed was going from sphere level 0 to 46 in one 2 minute battle.

FFX was a funny game I loved the battle system and the shere grid. I liked the look of the game. Here's the weird thing I loved the characters but I hated the story.

I absolutely thought the SIN story was utter shit yet the characters were great. I don't know how anybody (who likes RPG's) could hate this game. Dislike maybe but hate is a pretty strong word.

I stopped playing FFX around the 11 hours mark just before entering the "something Temple", a couple of years ago, because it started to get really boring. Who knows? Maybe I should give it another try and see if my opinion changes.

I thought everything about it was great except for the world map situation. Yeah, it was linear, but what FF game isn't? Only thing that comes to mind is the second half of FFVI, which many would argue is where that game really falls apart.

This is exactly why I hate it. At least FFVII seemed to be attuned to gamers.. FFX is clearly a product for the masses, and along with Kingdom Hearts, it turned me off not only to the FF series but to Square as a company. FFX-2 was worse still, I have no idea why that game is even still in our household.

But no, it's not a horrible game. I liked the leveling system. But I've never been able to fully accept voice acting in RPGs. If I have the option, I change the voices to French or Japanese or something and just read the subtitles, because I always liked reading the text better anyways. It left the expressions to the imagination...

ffx is the worst ff ever imo. i loved the battle system and the sphere grid though. but the game was so fake. tidus and yuna? gimme a break

Fake? I think you're thinking of Squall and Rinoa. :p

i wanted to like viii and x, but couldn't.

i found them to be too much like a teen soap opera. playing dawson's creek in a fantasy setting is a very boring experience imo. i felt like yelling 'ffs tidus, grow up!!!', too many times to mention. unfortunately many current gen rpgs this follow this trait. i don't mind playing as a teenager, but i object to them moaning at me for 30+ hours.

i thought the sphere system was okay, but didn't like the fighting with summons, and hated blitzball.

ff8 has a better story and less whiney characters than 10.

I could go on for pages about why I think you're wrong here, but considering how many times I've done that before on old GAF, I'll just give you a quick recap of the high points instead: Squall is an emotional cripple who lashes out at the people who try to befriend him, and repays their kindness with abuse through most of the game. He is, in short, an asshole. The excuse for this is that he's withdrawn from people because of the painful events of his childhood. Tidus also has issues (with regard to his father) that have left their mark on him, but he doesn't let those issues control him. He hasn't withdrawn into a shell over it and he doesn't treat the people around him like an ass. Right from the outset, he's a better (and certainly stronger) man than Squall was. I might have overlooked FF VIII's other flaws, but Squall's unlikeable nature pretty much poisoned the entire game for me.

The romance between Tidus and Yuna developed naturally, while Squall's relationship with Rinoa seemed painfully contrived. The whole thing felt awkward and forced, particularly the way we're expected to believe that a character who's spent most of the game being an utter dick has been magically transformed through the power of love. In fact, that entire subplot felt like a straight-to-video teen romance flick - moody loner jock (Squall) is brought out of his shell by bubbly cheerleader-type (Rinoa).

Last but not least, if you honestly believe that FF VIII had a better story than FF X, either you didn't finish X or you're on crack. VIII was such a train wreck in the plot department, it'd make anything look good by comparison. I've got two words for you: TIME KOMPRESSION. :p

Yes it does. It's so utterly generic in almost every way -

*The characters - cookie cutter amalgmations of various characters from previous FFs. There was barely an interesting character in sight.

*The music - worst FF soundtrack ever. Not one memorable tune. No seriously, I can't even fucking remember a single one.

*The plot - seriously, what a piece of shit. Same shit in different clothing, only it doesn't seem like the developers even tried with this one. It was an uninspired, tedious mess.

*No overworld. What the fuck. I expected linearity, but fuck me this is taking it too far.

The only aspects of FFX I found even remotely entertaining were the excellent graphics, and the sphere system. The battle system was neithere here nor there...it wasn't offensive, but neither was it really entertaining.

So in conclusion, FFX deserves every drop of hate that falls upon it. No I take that back, thsi game doesn't even deserve the attention required to hate it. Just don't go near this piece of shit, stick with FFs IV to IX instead.

Wrong in almost every way possible.

Even if you dislike the game, calling what is generally looked at as one of the best games this gen a piece of shit is a bit much, because it simply is not.

The plot? Even if you didn't like it, it was different than the past games and focused more on the actual characters relationships than VIII or IX. So same shit in different clothing is just wrong.

No overworld? Deal. You don't need an overworld where you just walk around to get to the next town. I personally enjoy it a bit more, but it does feel somewhat old right now, just like many people think random battles feel old. And with today's graphics, the transition from real world to overworld wouldn't be very smooth.

Worst FF soundtrack ever? Please, you couldn't possibly exaggerate more. It was more ambient than usual, but is that a bad thing? "Those Who Come Closer" (kind of forgetting what might be the actual name now) is a brilliant yet simple song that builds up tension. The battle song was kind of weak, but the boss themes? Awesome. (Especially the normal boss, Yunalesca, and the Summoned Beast Battle theme.)

To Zanarkand? Beautiful.

Uh, I don't really give a shit if you don't like the characters but they, for the most part, WERE original. Tidus was fun and easygoing, and if his whining annoyed you, then Square did their job. Lulu? Uh, what character is she a copy of again? Wakka? He has one of the most distinct FF personalities in a long while. The characters were good for the most part (certainly better than the bland no personalty characters of FFVIII) and after 10 games, of course you're going to be able to compare characters to old ones. But carbon copies? Not at all.

Best FF ever? Well no, obviously. But you're way too harsh on it.

FFX is awesome, awesome is FFX. It's the second FF game I played. FFIX was the first and I think the one I prefer, though it barely edges out FFX. Never had a problem with the VA really.

Actually I think my biggest problem was that in most times I ended up reading faster than listening and just skip the voices. It sucked because in order to have the 'full experience' I wanted to listen to all of it, but it's just too slow. I also didn't want to turn VA off (can you even do it in FFX) so I was just stuck in the middle, alternating between reading text and listening to the VA.

I really don't know where I stand on this issue. While playing Tales of Symphonia I turned VA off, but I also plan to replay FFX and I can't imagine playing it w/o VA. I guess I'll go with whatever is best suited to each game. OT: How's the VA in Shadow Hearts 2?
