So I'm still in the second chapter and I'm just taking my time now, exploring all the side games and stuff though I don't think I'll be playing much Shogi or Majong but I do enjoy all the random side stories. Some of them have been great like the Yanki band needing advice from Kiryu.
I'm still trying to figure out who Louis is supposed to be based on. Can't just be some random dude, otherwise there'd be no point for him to even be there.
Now that I've put some time into the game this is quickly rising up the charts of my favorite game of the year. Its so damn charming and I'm not even that far into the actual story. The side stories are rather well done as well. One thing I noticed about this game is that they use subtle simple facial animations or bits of body language and camera shots to really emphasize something in a scene. Seems like such simple stuff but its apparent even in all the side mission stuff that might just be characters just standing about and does so much to just flesh out things and sell the scene better.
Are the side stories missable? I've already done over a dozen with more popping up as I just run around but I'm loving nearly all of them and don't want to miss any if possible.

No. They never expire and can be done any time. Also, if you finish the game before doing them all you can just play through the game in Premium Adventure mode to finish up anything you didn't clear in story mode.

Agreed, there is a great spread of side stories on offer - plus there are a pair of secret boss battles for those that clear all other side stories so they are worth doing for that alone!

Yeah, all Yakuza games (bar Yakuza 6) have hidden boss battles that unlock once you complete all side stories (and a couple of the early ones require other conditions to be met as well). Yakuza 6 makes things easier and only requires you to clear two particular side stories to unlock the optional boss battle.
PrinceofWhatever is doing the Kiwami OT, but he hasn't really made many posts in the Yakuza threads so I don't know how its going to turn out. Hopefully well!
So finally cleared the game. 120 hours at 90% completion. Needless to say I fucking adored it. It was extremely nice to go back to a more simple Yakuza game in both plot and features after Yakuza 5 really got a bit too heavy with everything going on.
Story was a really awesome. Was actually easy to follow with some great turns and phenomenal characters both new and old. Sagawa and Nishitani were the best new standouts. Makoto was cool and definitely ranks up there with the female leads of the franchise but was kind of dull. Story was refreshing compared to Yakuza 5's clusterfuck of a plot (which I still enjoyed but boy was it tripping over itself). While it definitely played up the dramatic irony at times with future entries I still got a kick out of some call backs
(seeing kiddie Daigo was super funny as was Ryuji)
. What I really wanted from this game was to see the transition of both Majima and Kiryu into what they would become in later games and they delivered. I think Majima fares much better story and development wise although Kiryu was still a wondrous badass.
That final "Kiryu-chan!" brought a huge smile to my face.
On a small story point that really made me happy, I am so glad that certain big plot points from later games are not ignored.
I am specifically referring to Saejima in this case. So happy they acknowledge him in both action and how Majima still carries that burden. They could have easily just played him down to nothing. Majima's final request really nailed the character.
It still has that Yakuza jankiness which is unfortunate but after going through now 7 games of clumsy menus I am used to it. The big mini-games were fun for awhile but their importance to level progression can be somewhat of a buzz kill. Unless you start cheesing Mr. Shakedown you are stuck doing them
(also they needed for Legend Styles)
. They are fun but the Hostess takes its time while not providing enough cash quick and Real Estate is just a slow wait for usable money. The C.R.E.A.M aspect of the game was really fun at first but by end it just becomes annoying. Also, having to sit through that fucking animation to level up a skill point really got on my nerves.
Especially bum rushing Legend Style level ups.
Will definitely be going back for that 100% completion later down the line. Hopefully before Kiwami comes in. Nothing major left although the ones I think will break me will be OutRun, FantasyZone and those fucking horrible batting cages. Still got some substories to clear out but majority of them have been really charming.
I am so hoping Amon delivers in this game!
Overall, it was a fucking amazing game and definitely ranks up there as one of my favourites in the franchise. It was looking like GOTY at the start of the year and now I can confirm it will stick. It going to be hard choosing between this and Persona 5. Kiwami going to be more streamlined which should be a nice change of pace. As for Yakuza 6 I worry it is going to be even bigger than Yakuza 5 which can be both a blessing and a curse. Ah fuck it, I will be there day 1 regardless.

6 isn't bigger than 5 - it only has 2 cities, one playable character and technically less of anything whether it be mini games, side stories etc. Not that I'd say that's a bad thing in itself, while I love 5 dearly, I totally understand how many people felt it was just too big. I feel in many ways 6 is more focused - less side stories for example - but the quality of said stories are better than past games. Likewise while there are less mini games to do, the ones that return all get decent make overs (gameplay wise) and the new stuff that is added was stuff I really enjoyed (especially the new Sega arcade games).
Indeed, the game never references it again nor does it offer an explanation.
I guess it's just supposed to show how much of the real estate Tatchibana owns and that they're a force to be reckoned with in spite of Yakuza competion.
Man, why are Majima's CP requirements to get the Limit Break unlock seem more ridiculous than Kazuma's? I know the devs want you to do every activity, but do I really have to play every single minigame to completion just to get the limit break unlock? That talisman unlock just seems out of reach as well. It's like the devs are saying, if you want to best stuff in the game, you better get gud at Shogi and Mahjongg!
Anyway, Majima's Cabaret Club minigame was pretty fun, but you make so much less money compared to Kiryu's real estate business, and even that doesn't really give you enough money frequently enough to get your skills leveled up in a timely manner. I'm not really worried about it though since I exploited mister shakedown. I'm just waiting to be able to send cash to Majima.

The problem is Majima generally has less content in the game. This makes sense since Dotembori is smaller. He also has 40 vs 60 quests. My problem with CP balance is then that I had to use a lot towards the hostess game to get the bonus hostesses then there is not enough to unlock his upgrades for the legendary style. Not sure they thought this through. In Kiryu's game there is no tie-in with completion in spending CP so I saved all my CP for useful stuff instead.

Dang, I decided to read up on what the War God Talisman/Amulet actually does and now I want to get it. Unfortunately, the amount of CP I need is utterly absurd! I'm a few CP away from unlocking the Golden Shotgun for Majima, which I absolutely don't care about, but I have to unlock it in order to get to the Limit Break unlock, which is another 30+ CP!!! It's like, if you invested CP in to the Cabaret Club, or Adventure tree, you pretty much screwed yourself over!
You are so correct, the CP balancing is terrible! Kiryu's isn't half this bad. He also has more to do.
Man, Yakuza 0 is so much more fun when you're not grinding.
Beat the game tonight and it was amazing. Really enjoyed it and took my time. Sadly I didn't complete as many side quests as I'd have liked. What is the best way to go back and complete them? I made a save before the final chapter but a new mode unlocked after beating it so I'm not sure if I can play that to do the side stuff?

Yeah, I got a bit confused between the different modes that unlock. There's Premium Adventure, something about a Clear mode as well? Still not sure what they all are, to be honest.

You can play Premium Adventure mode in one of two ways. You could load your save file and continue your side stuff right where you left them in the main story. Or if you wanna experience all of the side stuff from the beginning, you can make a clear Premium Adventure save and do everything all over again.

In Yakuza 4 we see that Majima lose his eye while he was in the Yakuza, but in 0 he already lost his eye and said hes a civilian. Did he get kicked out of the Yakuza at one point and join back in?

So I just played and finished my first Yakuza game with 0. And I love it. And I need to know what happens next. I need another Yakuza game! I have the 4th one on PS+ and I'm itching to start it. Buuut I should probably wait for the remake that's coming out in a few months right? Will they be remaking 2 as well?
