Yakuza Community Thread - FEEL THE HEAT!

So carrying on with the Yakuza 6 hype the trophy list has popped up for 6:
http://yakuzafan.com/yakuza-6-trophy-list-no-spoilers/

There aren't really any spoilers in the trophy list, only one boss battle is mentioned by name and that's the usual optional secret boss, and any fan of the series that has been playing from the beginning will not be surprised to see "him" return to fight Kiryu once more.

Looks like the trophies just involve clearing/enjoying all the playspots as per usual, maybe one of the completion goal trophies requires you to 100% the entire game but its not clear at the moment. Only one that concerns me is the "100 wins" in the gang creator mode. Hope that doesn't mean online wins against other people, I tend to dislike online trophies and would rather the Yakuza series not include any.

Nice to see the return of Legend difficulty, so would save my maxing of everything for it, I'm thinking the 100 wins might be overall but if it ends up for online only that would be a hassle so I wouldn't mind doing some boosting sessions if anyone wants the trophy if it comes to that.

Sooooo glad we finally announced these! Super stoked for all the Yakuza fans who stuck by the series. We did it!

Hey, John! It's great to see you here again.

Would you mind doing me a favor? Please find the people who are responsible for Y6 & Kiwami localization at Sega & Atlus and give them the biggest hug of their lives. And if you were one of them then ask someone else to give a long and heartfelt hug as well.

Because me simply buying these games won't be enough to show how much I love everyone who made this happen. Honestly, THANK YOU.

And don't worry, I'll never stop posting Yakuza gifs :)

Thanks so much for going above and beyond the call, I don't know any publisher who'd be willing to release 3 games so close to each other in the same series but you guys took the risk so we won't be so far behind and you have my thanks.

Now waiting to cry buckets when I play and finish Yakuza 6.

I've said it before and I'll continue saying it.

Always believe, even when things look dark and you think Sega wouldn't deliver, always trust in this man!

Finally gave Yakuza 5 a bit of a spin. While it'd be convenient to say it was because of the Yakuza announcements it was really down to the fact I FINALLY could get the damn game fully downloaded. Still kind of want to play the prior 3 (beat 1 years ago) though, but playing 2 would be a pain and the HD collection never hit PS3 in NA.

this, so hard!

you know what's crazy, was talking with my roommate bishopcruz (also a huge yakuza fan) and this feels like the first time since part 4 in 2011 that we were caught up, at least as far as only being 1 year behind the current chapter in japan. how cool is that?!

5 took 3 years to show, but here are <3

Yeah, it's so damn amazing. I haven't really felt like Yakuza was alive in the west for the longest time up until now. Man, I still remember those days of checking YakuzaFan.com every single morning in hope of Y5's localization.

We've truly come a long way.

Yeah, I also agree about the catching up part. For the longest time we've been behind, but with this next set of announcements, not to mention the uncertainty about what the next Japanese release is and when its coming, we've finally got confirmation all the non side story Yakuza games are getting translated, and the announcement of 6 was before the game was even released in Japan! So that's great news.
Now I just need to work out how I'm going to find the time to play all the Yakuza releases without overdosing on the series! 6 will take me a couple of months at least to finish if past games in the series are anything to go by. At least Kiwami is a shorter game in comparison to most of the series, so I can probably replay that one faster. 0 will take a while though... (and I wanted to do a run on 4, Kenzan and Black Panther 2 sometime next year, not sure when that's happening now!)

Yeah, I'm hoping its just 100 wins, not 100 online wins. Oh well, not long to wait now anyway, 4 days :)

Thank you so much for bringing it over!

This series has been through thick and thin. After Yakuza 6, this series will have had 9 western releases.

Y1-6
Yakuza Dead Souls
Yakuza 0
Yakuza Kiwami

Let's hope it finally takes off and gets the success it deserves.

Wait, what? Is this confirmed?

Please, for the love of Majima, let it be confirmed!

I finally finished up Yakuza 5 this week. I don't have much time on my hands these days with kids and work and I've generally always played through the main story of the Yakuza series only. After finally finishing Yakuza 5, I get the feeling that that is probably the wrong way to play through the game. By 'rushing' through the game, it made Chapters 2 and 3 stick out a lot more. I'm going to go back and try and explore a little more, having not done many of the mini games or side quests, I think there's still a lot in the game.

The problem with playing just the main story in Yakuza 5 is there's such a big drop in pacing during chapter 2 and 3. I don't think chapter 2 is well handled, but that doesn't mean the rest of the game isn't good. I think both chapters 4 and 5 are great and among the best in the series. If they could have just given the player more to do in chapter 2 in the prison areas and once he gets out, that would have rescued the chapter significantly.

In terms of the cities, Kamurocho and Sotenbori were easily better than the other three cities. Both Kiryu's and Shinada's cities were fine, I did not like Saejima's city and I certainly did not like playing through the part when it was in his imagination and it was black and white. The detail in both Kamurocho and Sotenbori were a step above the other three cities and I feel like the other cities were rushed a little. There's also a lot less activities in the other cities too. One thing that's very frustrating is that you don't get access to all the cities until right at the end of the game and at that point I just wanted to finish the game rather than hold off completing the game. I think for future games in the series, they should definitely open it up as soon as you get to the new city.

I think they should also have reduced Haruka's section significantly, I know its integral to the rest of the story, but there should have been a way to reduce about 5 hours from Saejima's section and another 5 hours from Haruka's section, making the game roughly 25-30 hours, and not the 40 I ended up playing.

Still though, I'd like to do a more thorough playthrough one day (if I stop buying games I might be able to!), because I don't think I've seen everything yet.

Congrats!!

So all Yakuza games will be available and you don't have to worry if the next game will be localized anymore. Isn't it a good idea that Sega&Sony push back Y0 and release Kiwami next month?

Finally managed to play RGG6 for about two hours straight.

I like the new food & stomach guage system. Even if you aren't a completionist, you have some motivation to do food crawl in RGG6.

In the previews, Yokoyama says erning money is harder in RGG6, but I found Mahjong got easier and earn good amount of money in a short time, you can earn the same amount of money in a battle in RGG0 though :p I played it about ten times but never lost.

I kinda got used to RGG6's performance issues but having them in Karaoke (rhythm game) is atrocious. hope the game to get some performance update.

Yeah, Mah Jong is currently a really easy way to earn money. I've got some really good hands that in turn earned me a lot of cash real quick and there's no question that its easier than previously. I've only been playing on one table though. Maybe the other table is higher stakes/higher difficulty but with a better payout?
And yeah, I love the new food system. I also like the amount of new restaurants that have opened up, I'm going to enjoy going for any food related completion goals in this game that's for sure.

I've not really experienced any issues with Karaoke myself bar a couple of instances of the video skipping very briefly on my first play (I had exactly the same problem on Yakuza 5 recently). Otherwise it seemed fine performance wise, I can already 100% one song very easily.

I never thought we'd be in a situation where we know about three Yakuza games coming to the west.

Such timid excitement coming into this generation.

And now here I am, Shenmue 3 announced, Sonic Mania announced, 3 Yakuza games are coming over, Daytona 3 has been announced, Gravity Rush 2 coming out soon, truly we're in the era of dreams.

Where will I even find the time for some of these games if I'm visiting Kamurocho THREE TIMES IN JUST OVER A YEAR!

Last time I was so excited about going into a year was 2012, man 2017 is going to be amazing.

I wish Hidenori Shoji would saturate more of the new Yakuza music OSTs because he really is the GOAT between all the new composers they try to shove in.

I'm listening to all the music he did in Y3 including usually the final boss themes in like all of the games and they're all sooooooo good.

I love 3's soundtrack - especially the final boss version of "Fly" as well as Amon's theme and the music used for Lau. It might actually be my favourite Yakuza soundtrack, I've listened to it tons lately.

I forgot Kiwami had the "Majima Anywhere" system! That feature is the best! It's like walking around and when you turn the corner, you see Vergil. I'm so excited for Kiwami!

funny, i kept picturing Nemesis in RE3
Nemesis in RE3 was the stuff of nightmares man. There was this one time that he was chasing me and I ran into a new alley (the first one with the dogs if you remember it) and then immediately went to save room. I saved the game, calmed my self and went outside. The moment that I stepped out of the room Nemesis grabbed my face with his hand and shouted "STARS". I jumped and screamed like a little girl.

Man, I would kill for a Nemesis equivalent in Yakuza series. Though, maybe in some spin-off title and not the main series. (Dead Souls missed that opportunity)

they totally did!! almost wanna say Goda would've been perfect but i did love getting to play as him

Yeah, for a game that was basically Yakuza's play on RE, L4D and other similar games on survival horror genre, they really missed that opportunity. I honestly would've loved it if they had made Goda the Nemesis of Dead Souls. He certainly fits the mold with his huge build and body.

Also, am I the only one who is now (after Y6 and YK's western announcements) rewatching the Japanese trailers for these games and finding them to be much more hype? Even more than before? I think knowing the fact that they are coming to west, just makes it a lot easier for me to enjoy and get myself hype over them.

In the tone of the game, Hayashi would have worked as a Nemesis type character in Dead Souls - he was initially shown to be pretty darn strong in the opening and I really loved his character in 1&2 so I'd not have objected to basically making him Nemesis (my favourite non Mega Man Capcom character).
Zombie Majima would have worked perfectly as a Nemesis type character though - retaining just enough of his twisted humanity that he'd hunt down and stalk Kiryu at every turn just for the heck of it (don't forget, Majima originally stated in the first game that he wanted to be the one to take KIryu down). Still, then we wouldn't have had him as a playable character in DS, and that would have made it much worse...

@Sparda - I love watching the trailers, they are well done and never fail to hype me up (much like the intro vids to each game). Its now just 3 days left to the Japanese release of 6, can hardly wait!

I also got around to finishing 5 this weekend and I tend to agree with you, its not a bad game but it does suffer some serious pacing issues. I also find its expecting the primary mini-game assigned to each protag (apart from Akiyama) to do some heavy lifting and most of them are boring, Hunting is boring, glad handing and dancing are boring, driving was meh, I essentially skipped baseball entirely and never gave it a shot because at that point I was sick of the game wasting my time.

Yakuza games should have mini-games but this game felt like a mini-game collection, this was the first time I've felt that way about a Yakuza game.

I don't think its story helped tie the loose mini-game threads together they were asking the story to pull far too much weight and it ended up too melodramatic and it required everyone to know everything and nothing at the same time, and play along with the bad guy . Also how many times to you want to tell me about passing dreams on.

That being said I quite liked Shinada and thought he added some comedy and his profession and supporting characters were a good low level of seedy that doesn't show up in these games often enough for what and where they are based on.

Id rank the games I have played so far as such: 2, 4, 3, 1, 5.

@Triteton

I also found Shinada's character interesting, and the baseball angle was something fresh for the Yakuza series. I didn't really know how it was going to be connected to the rest of the story, but it didn't really matter. There was the mystery of the man with the mask and his identity and the loan shark Takasugi and who's side he was really on. Also I got into a lot more fights than usual because Shinada was skint broke. The adult writer part didn't really go anywhere though.

Saejima was really bland in comparison. In Yakuza 4, Saejima's character's is rescued by his plot arc, by getting sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit and made that chapter interesting. But there's nothing like that in Y5, and his character is boring for the majority of his chapter. Couple that with yet another prison sequence which was even more drawn out than the last game and it really dragged the game down.

Yeah, they were pretty hype back then but they've just become that much sweeter to watch since the localization announcement. I especially love that YK Japanese announcement trailer finishing with this, which I think is one of the hypest things ever.

Yakuza Kiwami confirmed to be getting a retranslation from scratch (which, I guess, goes without saying, but nice to hear anyway).

Well that's good news indeed. Not that I wasn't going to buy it again anyway, but its certainly nice to see it confirmed all the same.

Well if it makes you feel any better I'm fairly certainly they at least use some of that badass gif in the
start of the final battle.
. Which is another thing I love about the series in general - I forget which game in the series was the first to do it but I love the transition from cutscene to boss battle. Its gotten so seamless lately - such as the finale of Ishin or the end of the first (alpha) demo of Yakuza 6 back at the beginning of the year.

I was actually hoping that they've somehow included that in the final game so it's pretty cool to hear that they actually have.

And yeah, I totally agree. I think one of the most hype things that I've ever seen in any game is that Kiryu Vs Akiyama & Tanimura pre-fight cutscene. Series has been so good in that regard in general. Even Y0 that (some of) us are yet to play, seem to have more of these stuff that they've shown in trailers (that I'm assuming are from pre-boss fight scenes) that look absolutely amazing.

Welp, I did it. After taking a long hiatus from Yakuza 5, I've finally picked it up again and finished part 3.

I liked the idol stuff with Haruka, but at the same time, I don't think it would've killed them to include more than 3 songs for as many missions as she had. The Akiyama parts left me hanging, though I decently enjoy the dynamic between the two characters.

The plot is... still nonsensical. Yakuza 4's plot, while still quite wacky, had lots of enjoyable moments and was the good kind of dumb.

Yeah, there are some great bits in the vids (and intro) that are pre boss scenes - Majima has at least two that are incredibly well done (heck, thinking about it pretty much any Majima boss battle in that game is epic!).

I've been avoiding Yakuza 6 footage because not knowing whether it'll get translated and watching gameplay of it would probably kill me, however I did watch one piece of footage when they revealed it. They were showing new HEAT system, I never saw any contextual heat animations (you know, slamming sb against a wall, cigarette punch etc.), are they back, or did they scrap it in favor of some slow mo punches/kicks with camera zoom?

^^
I'm wondering if I should pre-order digitally or would it better to wait out and see if I can get my hands on one of those physical copies with the sick card holder.

Actually can you link me to that video? Like you I haven't followed Y6 that much for the same reason, so I'm curious to see how they have changed the heat system.

That's a alpha video from February. It was practically just a tech demo at that point and doesn't represent the finished game all that well in terms of Heat moves.

The latest demo showcased way more heat moves, I personally saw the following:

Heat combo finishers (mash triangle when using heat mode and finishing a combo to get one of several zoomed in heat finishers)

Grab an enemy and walk toward a wall (standard smash against the wall heat move)

Run into the Millennium Tower and throw someone off the second floor (as in previous games, throwing them from a great height)

Grab an enemy and walk up to a lamp post - throw the enemy into the lamp post in what is almost certainly the most painful heat move in the demo (enemy has their legs spread, so the lamp post smashes them straight in the groin area!)

Pick up weapons and pull off heat moves (new animations but the same as per previous games). Stuff like Sword and dagger have all new awesome animations.

Stunning the enemies and then entering heat state lets you pull off a couple more combo finishers like Pile Drivers or throws. There is also one where you do a multiple knee attack but I don't remember what the input was.

Also, enter heat mode and grab an enemy while being surrounded by many enemies, then press circle again to being the spinning throw attack. You'll get a heat prompt and you'll pull off an attack where you hit multiple enemies with the one grabbed enemy.

And it should be pointed out that this is just the demo - your not levelled up and can't unlock new heat moves so the final number of heat moves in the game will be certainly higher with more awesome heat moves unlocked as you go.

So in short, yes far more heat moves are in the final game which is finally out tomorrow! Its going to suck waiting for my copy to arrive!

I still can't believe I bought Ishin. I CAN'T READ ANYTHING!!! I'm low on health and I can't find a store to heal myself!

Depending on where you are in the game - in the starting town on Ishin there is a a guy that sells you healing medicine, once you hit the main town/city there is a dedicated medicine shop where you can buy health supplies. I'd imagine KHHsubs has a decent map on his site, I've not played the game in a while so I can't remember exactly where the shop is but its fairly easy to find.

So the game is out here today.
My history with the Yakuza series:
- Played the demo for Yakuza 3 or 4 years ago, was impressed.
- Bought used 5 for very cheap, disc was scratched and it didn't work, but it was too late to take it back. Whatever!
- Grabbed Ishin with my PS4, played it for an hour or two, but sold it back. I honestly don't remember why.
- Played Yakuza 0 for 5+ hours, loved many parts of it, mainly the over the top story missions, attention to detail, minigames. Didn't like high random encounter rate, the "money guy" who'd beat me up and side quests which felt like busy work, not even voiced.

I'm thinking about giving the series a fair shot with Yakuza 6, but I'm honestly a bit worried about the story, since I've heard that it's a direct continuation of Yakuza 5, but there's no way I'm playing through the 2 back to back.
Should I just ignore 6 or read up on the "story so far" somewhere?

The first cutscene of 6 basically covers what you need to know about the end of 5's story so its not imperative to play 5 before playing 6. Plus there is a weird dream sequence near the beginning of the game that gives you some background on certain characters/past events that I'd imagine are somewhat important to 6's story. So its up to you, you won't be lost not having played 5, it'd just completely spoil the ending and main story of 5 by playing the two games out of order.

I think I figured it out. I just went to a bunch of stores and bought stuff until it healed myself lol.

I gotta use KHHsubs. When I first started Ishin and Kenzan, I used the text guide for Ishin and the video guide for Kenzan. They were fantastic. They started a video series for Ishin, but I don't think they're finished yet. I mostly need the cutscenes with subs, but I can deal.

Edit; Also I'm at the part where Kiryu gets the blue coat.

Listening to Soubou from Yakuza 6 and getting heavy nostelgia for the series.

Man, what a ride it's been, getting hyped for it first in 2006 and then getting it, all the twists and unexpected character deaths
Shintaro Kazama :(
then the torture waiting for 2 and the excitement over it being announced and then one of my favourite ridiculous plot points "I WAS KOREAN ALL ALONG!"

Finally seeing 3, I stayed up all night to see it during SEGA's TGS livestream and being amazed at the first next gen title to really interest me and wondering back then, would this be it for Kazuma? The quotes and even the cover completely had me hook line and sinker on it. That obviously didn't happen with 4 and Dead Souls flashing by and then the pain that was 5 (Which I imported because I thought that was it after Bomba Domain) and now I'm seeing so many people with Yakuza 6 in my twitter timeline, this is it, we've really hit the end, this will be Kiryu's final game.

Now I'm sad, my favourite series is going to end pretty soon :,(

2017 is going to be filled with me just replaying 0 and Kiwami over and over until 6 arrives.

This game is just not for you.
