Yakuza KIWAMI |OT| Translator's Note: "KIWAMI" means "EXTREME"

At the end of the day, it's still your call. It's just that I've played all of them and if you want my opinion, it's better for any newcomer to start with Zero.
I want to. It's just that I missed out on a sale and now it's $59.99 everywhere and I don't even know when I'll get to either (I just wanted to play intro of Kiwami) so I can probably wait for it to go on sale again. Even just $40 and I'll order it.

Just finished chapter 1. Weird how seemingly important Yumi is to Kiryu and Nishiki yet she was nowhere to be seen in 0. That bothers me.

That was by far the weirdest omission in 0 :/ I think they mention her literally once in the story.

I might be mistaken on that, but Yumi is younger than both Kiryu and Nishiki and by the time Y0 happens, she's still in the orphanage. I also remember that they mention her in Y0 once too, but I don't remember when that was.

Yakuza 0 -> Kiwami would be the ideal way to start the series (since both stories would feel stronger that way), but It's okay to start with Kiwami as well.

Just don't forget to get Yakuza 0 whenever you have the chance.

Yeah they talk about her in Serena like one time, but she still a too young to go at bar so she can't work at the bar like they mention.

There's basically two ways I'd recommend people to start the series now:

Y3 (KInda optional, slow start and while I really like it it might not get people. Nothing in it really has any bearing on things in the other games other than establishing Kiryu's orphanage)->Y4->Y5->0->Kiwami, which is the natural progression.

Or 0 and Kiwami now and go through the PS3 games as time/money allows if you plan to play Yakuza 6, since it's putting the cap on the Kiryu saga and it's a direct sequel to 5.

Anyway really enjoying this so far, put about an hour and a half in.

Y3 is one of my favorites, but I wouldn't recommend anyone start with it. The slow start feels like a reward for everything that Kiryu went through in the previous titles. I'd rather even start with 2, then to start with 3.

PS2s are like $20 on Craigslist/kijiji

I'd say either Y0-Kiwami-Y2-Y3-Y4-Y5-Y6 (Potentially wait until Kiwami 2 comes out if you are patient)
Or release order

Yeah, Yakuza 4 is also a pretty good starting point.

Anyway, when the crane Gods are angry with you:

I can't get any ultimate heat moves to proc. I'm doing the
first shimano
fight now, and he's gone into the rechargey state twice now. Both times the aura was purple, and both times I was in rush with full heat, but I just didn't get the prompt. I tried lock on and without, and I don't know what's going on

You have to unlock the abilities in the soul tree. There are 3: thug, rush, beast.

Seriously. I don't understand how she was absent from Zero. This is super jarring for someone like me who started the series with Zero.

Just got my hands on this, quick questions, 1) is there any miss able trophies/hard fail-able sidequests like previous games and 2) if so is there any equivalent khh guide like from Zero

No missable trophies, but you need to play the game through twice. No failable side missions either unlike the original Yakuza. Not sure about guides, there are some Japanese wiki's that I used for my first playthrough, but other than that I can't think of anything.

You can really tell that the direction and composition of the cutscenes in these games have gotten much better in the later games. Kiwami's cutscenes are shot for shot the same as the original and even use the original animations. In the first cutscene with Majima, they added a new part to it and when it seemlessly goes from original to new cutscene, right away the overall quality goes up. It's a little jarring but w/e. I'll get used to it.

Beat Yakuza 0 on hard, but I am getting already destroyed in the stardust club right now haha. Guess I should have tried to get some healing items.

This was my only issue with 0 - felt like she was just put away for no good reason honestly considering they actually mention the Orphanage enough times. Really bizarre and this is coming from a fan since the PS2 days.

which one released first on Japan, Kiwami or 0?

I want to play the one released first so that I would feel the upgrades of the next game like a natural sequel.

0, Kiwami came next.

Yeah as a fan from the release of the original in the West.

It really bothered me that Yumi and Nishiki's sister was completely excluded and Kazama only had one talking scene. Probably my biggest disappointment with 0.

Damn this thread is pretty big already. I just got my copy and I'm super glad I got the steelbook. It's pretty awesome.

I should tell my boss to piss off so I can sit my ass down for a week and play it nonstop but I guess that's adult life lol.

Its not a bad way to start the series for sure but you will also miss out on some of the fun of the nods to Yakuza 1 and 2 that are in Yakuza 0.

Thanks! Had to wait until the end of Tokyo Game Show to approach Nagoshi and he kindly signed it for me. Sadly it never crossed my mind to take a photo with him, I was a bit star struck at that point!

He's pretty tan but not enough to be called a star I think.

Finally going to hop on the Yakuza train with this installment!

I also bought Yakuza 3 when the reprint happened a few months back, but I won't count that for now. :p

Yeah, but if Kiwami is the only thing that they can get at the moment, then there is nothing else that can be done.
Can compare to Y3 ? If yes F Horizon I jump direct to this game !
It's been years since I last played Y3 so I can't really compare. But it is pretty difficult. Zero was like a cakewalk compared to this.

Just finished. They didn't fix some of those original bullshit fights, huh? Easy, but long and frustrating because of health items unlike later games where it feels fair if you know what you're doing.

Still so worth it though, what an amazing game. And I appreciated the ending even more without Eliza Dushku sounding kinda sexy but acting awfully.

Roll on 6 and Kiwami 2.

Ironically, if I didn't know beforehand I'd guess Kiwami came first because 0 is so much more polished and well designed, it's absurd. Like, Kiwami isn't bad in the slightest, but it feels like it introduced stuff like fighting styles and the new level up system and then 0 made it all work more cohesivelly.

Feels like the closest to 3 out of the games that came after it, yeah.

Playing this without healing items on Hard is suicide... Although it's not completely unfair either. Most (all?) bosses get cooldown periods after a while to let you breath and trigger kiwami climax attacks (these have to be purchased in the Soul board though, I suggest getting them ASAP) now.

Need help, i've got a mail telling me that an hostess absolutely wants to meet "kiryu-san" and that she's waiting at Shine Club!

I did go there but there was the regular hostess.... do i need to do something special?

Can I get some help finding
Majima? He is supposed to be in some alleyway with props.

same here!

Picked up two physical copies and a digital one. One I gifted, the other's for my collection.

I started the game tonight and got up to chapter 4. Loving it so far. I went totally out of order after 0 since I already finished 4 and played a bit of 5 while waiting for this to come out but I'm totally fine with it, I actually kinda like it to connect the dots afterwards.

Has anyone seen the glowing butterflies? What do you do to them?

There's one in a tree and I can't figure out what it does.
