Yankee Swap Ideas

Everyone's favorite gift swapping tradition, typically between $20-$30.
I'm curious on any fun/creative suggestions.

Last year for me was live Lobster (Bay Area). Caused a lot of laughs and if you get stuck with it, impromptu lobster dinner.

'round here we call it White Elephant - never heard it called Yankee Swap.

I used to go with the gag gift but these days I do something practical or fun like a game. I'd probably gift an NFT if I wanted to do something as a joke.

1)Buy restaurant sized Suran wrap.

2)Buy ~20 small gifts (pack of gum up to $50 gift card). Gifts should range from gag gifts, candy, decent gifts, money etc...

3)Starting with best gifts, wrap Suran wrap around one excessively...then put next gift in...wrap excessively...do this until you have basketball sized Suran wrap ball loaded with 20 gifts.

4)Everyone sit in big circle in your living room.

5)First person begins unwrapping Suran wrap ball (trying to get gifts ASAP) while person to their right is trying to roll doubles with dice as fast as possible. As soon as doubles are rolled, dice get passed to the right and original dice roller rips ball away from person unwrapping to their left. Go around room until entire ball is unwrapped and grand prize is won.

Game is instantly fun for the kids and adults start going nuts once the gifts start getting good.

Let us know what you got, OP. I wanted to post but couldn't think of anything other than items from The Office episode. Video iPod!

The hit gift I brought one year was a combination lock safe disguised as a Dictionary. You can find them easily on Amazon. They are practical (everyone has valuables they want to keep that little bit safer, even though in reality burglars probably know to check bookcases) and people usually avoid the gift because it looks like a wrapped book which no one wants.

One year the person who got it was visibly disappointed because they thought they got a real Dictionary as a gag gift. Only upon inspecting the dictionary and realizing it wasn't real paper did they figure out what it was, and everyone had a big laugh, and they went on and on about how perfect it is as they've been looking for a place to hide money from their house cleaner (lol).

I've yet to find a better gift. Feel free to steal the idea - enjoy!
