Seriously, Nintendo Switch is a disruptive device. Please read on…
I believe that the reason people get so upset about the Nintendo Backwards Compatibility issue is Nintendo caught lightening in a bottle with Switch. I fundamentally view Switch different than 3DS / Xbox / or Playstation.
Nintendo created the hybrid console that could play console quality games. Nintendo essentially created the first video game “iPOD”.
Nintendo Switch = Apple iPod. Everyone’s iPod at the time was a disruptive device that was ”personal” to consumers. A first of its kind. (Mainstream anyway). The Switch is the same way.
I am not sure Nintendo or consumers view it like this. I do believe Sony, Valve and Microsoft do! Recent revelations that MS is considering moving to ARM for next generation is another in a long line of comments that make me think, the traditional “box” console model will die for Xbox and they will move to “streaming” or a hybrid model as well. (Probably both).
Furthermore, I believe Sony’s PlayStation Portal is just a Trojan horse to see how much interest consumers have in the product without having to move to a full fledged handheld Or hybrid device.
DOES Nintendo need Switch 2 to be Backwards Compatible? NO!, it will likely sell well regardless. Will it outsell Switch 1 without BC? No idea, but I would think it is HIGHLY Unlikely.
Public trust would be eroded in Nintendo because of the lack of BC. Digital purchases would not mean anything.
The Nintendo Switch is also a “battery” backed device. We WILL NOT be playing Switch in ten years like we do older consoles today. The battery will mostly be expired. Then we will have no way to play these purchases without backwards compatibility.
What would have happened to iPod if every time you upgraded, you couldn’t play your old content? How would have that gone over with consumers? What about PC/Mac? iPhone / iPad?
The Nintendo switch has become “personal” for most everyone. We all have different point of view on how we use the device, when we use it, etc.
This is in my opinion, what some media are not grasping.
**Personally, in Nintendo’s defense though, I do not expect FREE graphics or performance upgrades of any kind**.
Should Nintendo choose to Not offer backwards compatibility, it would be a potentially monumental mistake. Especially, as it appears Nintendo‘s competitors are posed to copy them.
If Nintendo is really channeling Apple, as Nintendo executives have commented in the past about their admiration for Apple. It is time to be forward thinking and not be stuck in the past. Allow consumers to carry their content forward. No one says you can’t repackage it with upgrades and additional content. Those will sell anyway!
