Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

I already knew I'd dig this game after playing around in the toy box months ago but yeah, definitely enjoyed my time with it last night. The world is vibrant and pretty and in the case of the first world, plenty populated. I think I read somewhere in the past that they were big barren areas but that person must have been smoking something. Yooka controls fast, especially while rolling and jumps pretty far too so I can see there being a learning curve for platforming in this game that will frustrate some but I like how responsive everything is. As for the camera, I feel like I'm playing a different game than many here because I had zero issues with it last night and was able to home it in behind me whenever I wanted. Maybe it will be more of an issue in later areas? I'll definitely be looking out for that with how many have complained about it. I enjoy Trouser's character, a fun little persona.

I knocked out all the pagies I've come across so far but believe I need to expand the world before I do more outside of possibly transforming. Can you get the item for the first transformation before expanding the world? On that note, is there a way to exit the world besides from the start menu? I'm paranoid I'll lose some of the quills I grabbed if I do it that way as I'm not sure when it last auto-saved. As for the first mini-game, I agree that it's uninspired and doesn't control very well but at least it's easy to get the top score. Still, it'd be a shame if none of the mini-games were memorable so here's hoping they step up their game in later worlds.

Oh, I wanted to ask, for those of us completionists, does it make more sense to jump to each new world before expanding so you'll have everything you need to fully clear the world when you expand? Or are there new moves you can learn in the expanded sections that I'll need?

Is it just me or is Laylee an unpleasant character? A lot of her quips come across as mean-spirited.

Did you ever play Banjo-Kazooie? Kazooie was even more mean-spirited. Especially in Tooie. I don't mind it, personally. Some of the obvious 4th wall breaking jokes feel a bit too common and forced this time around, though.

I got 100% on worlds 3 and 4. The last token in world 4 took me an embarrassingly long time to find. It was in such an obvious location too.

Hmmm, I always kinda had the same problem with Nuts & Bolts. The first two games broke the 4th wall quite a bit, which is a trademark of Rare, but then N&B ended up taking it to the extreme. I mean one of that game's central characters is literally the lord and creator of video games.

Yes. It's
up on top of the pillar the scientist is standing next to.

I'm curious about your last question as well.

Yeah, I think Rare got a little too obsessed with taking the piss on both themselves and their fans. It was too meta for it's own good.

There is no real reason not to expand the worlds right away, but there is a certain skill you get before the final world than can help a lot with exploring, while also kind of ruining the novelty of moving around the worlds as well as trivializing several of the challenges. Honestly, you should just do what you feel like doing, the backtracking Pagies aren't all that common.

I recommend expanding before moving on. Later on you get an ability that completely breaks some of the challenges in earlier worlds.

Dr Quack's Quiz is one of the worst things I've ever encountered, especially with that unskippable assault on my eardrums.

I'll never understand the people that dislike the quizzes in these games. I loved the Dr. Quack quizzes.

I'm adoring this game so far, but the quiz was a bit much. Only because we couldn't speed through the question and had to sit and wait for the dialogue to finish each time. It was mostly how slow it was that got frustrating, especially if you fail and have to redo it.

Quick random question, is there any button unused on the dualshock for this game? My Right Trigger is not playing ball with this game like a few others thus I can't initiate the roll so until I fix this I need to remap R2 to something else.

Yeah, I don't think the dialogue is really that clever. But it doesn't help that 4th wall breaking has been done to death recently. Every other line is just them pointing out whatever generic game trope is happening then winking at the camera.

Depends where you are in the game as it unlocks. (Though I have a feeling you know this, it's worth reminding just in case!)

I don't think L1 does anything (unless a move you get in the last world uses it).

I felt that it just instantly killed the momentum of the game with that long, unskippable gibberish and seemingly random questions. I knew a few off hand but the pictures ones I got totally wrong. It was just annoying and it sounds like I've got even more to look forward to.

Might be an unpopular opinion here but I'm actually enjoying it more with the sound muted. The grunts and squeaks and stuff are very grating.

Do you really think this looks like a full priced game? Just from the technical aspects it already is clearly a budget game designed by a small team. I don't hold that against the game or anything but I don't get the impression that this could have ever passed as a full priced exclusive.

Games have changed a great deal since the N64 days and I'm not talking about the genre the game is in or anything. I'm talking about the somewhat cluttered and unpolished level design that has unneeded geometry that leads to characters being able to stand on what would normally be unreachable parts of the environment in a 3D Mario game, or mechanics like the sonar shooting that doesn't have a lock-on or strafing option to help with precision, or the arcade minigames that feel unfinished.

Yooka-Laylee, from what I've played at least, is a fun game. It's certainly not up to the standards of what companies would make exclusivity deals for, though. I don't really know how to explain it without going on a rant about things like "game-feel".

I absolutely think it does, yes. Technical aspects aren't that important imo. Look at other full priced games. Some of them are terrible in terms of bugs and glitches. And I think YL has outstanding level design. Just because the genre died 20 years ago doesn't mean that these kind of games aren't worth full price anymore. It's about fun, replayability, length and gameplay (imo). This game great. But it's also just my opinion. I don't know if I would call Banjo Kazooie the better game. Maybe it is but Yooka Layle is definitely better than Tooie.

Yeah, most of it isn't even actual jokes. It's just characters saying something video game related and acting as if that alone is funny.

Ex: Trousers saying a move you're about to buy helped him beat the World 3 boss.

Ex: Laylee saying the game doesn't have regenerating heath so it's harder than "those soft shooters".

The one time this actually worked really well in the Banjo Kazooie games was when that camel (ashamed I forgot his name) said he was going to go to the lava world in the first game, only for him to show up in a lava-themed world in the sequel.

Except as a kid I spent hours trying to find Goby in the one room in the entire game with lava, especially since the Goby's Valley jigsaw board was there...

With the recent exceptions of the recent Mass Effect and Resident Evil 7, all the recent full priced games I've played a much more polished from a technical standpoint than Yooka-Laylee. I'm not talking about bugs or glitches either (but you YL has those in spades as well) but just when it comes to basic visual aspects like the engine being used, the shading, draw distance, frame skipping, stuff like that. You can tell this was a game made with a very small budget.

Just because the genre died 20 years ago doesn't mean that these kind of games aren't worth full price anymore.
I never said that. I'd love if there were more AAA full priced 3D platformers.

It's about fun, replayability, length and gameplay (imo).

I agree that this is what matters most when it comes down to whether I enjoy a game or not but that isn't all that's required of a game if you're going to sell it at full price.

Maybe it is but Yooka Layle is definitely better than Tooie.

Without a doubt, but that's not an incredibly high bar to pass in 2017. I don't think it's going to surpass the original Banjo-Kazooie in my eyes.

Well then. Haven't played it yet, but just assumed that it didn't because people complained about the camera. lol

The main problem with the camera is that it's a solid object. This means that it can get caught on the environment sometimes.

I've only had two issues with the camera across the four worlds that I've played.

Gobi. Whom Banjo and especially Kazooie mistreat and mock in every single encounter for their own selfish goals. It's played for laughs...and it totally earns them, bless this series' dark humor. I'll be happy if Laylee can live up to that (though I'm very sorry to hear the dreadful reliance on 4th wall jokes from N&B seems to show up here too)

Ugh so I finally got a slip from the postman in my postbox tonight saying they tried delivering my physical copy today and yesterday, but couldn't as it needs signing for, so they'll try again tomorrow. I rang the phone number that was left on there and asked if it can be left with a neighbour. They said OK. Why couldn't they have done this in the first place I don't know, but I'm quite annoyed at changing my mind to the physical copy instead of digital. I could have been playing it right now :(

I collected some pages on the first world and a message popped up with the page speaking saying that I had enough pages for "something" but I missed the dialog because I was starting a minigame at the same time. Does someone remember what the page said?

You have enough pages to expand the world. Go back to the hub and stand on the platform where you opened the world.

Ah yes, Gobi. Love that sounds that camel made!

The're probably telling you that you have enough Pagies to "expand" the level you're in. You can leave the level to learn more about it. (You need 3 Pagies in order to expand the first world).

Possibly to expand the world. Each world can be "upgraded" to a bigger version with more puzzles and things to explore. You go out of the world and can upgrade it using the pedestal you used to unlock it in the first place.

Is it impossible to do certain things/reach certain places in World 1 until you get moves in later worlds? There have been a few places where I feel like I need to be able to jump higher.

Played the intro yesterday and a bit of the first level, it felt and looked great on PS4.
The only negatives I can think of is that it feels a bit "stiff" and the camera definitely isn't "optimal"... And yes, controls would be better if Yooka was a little slower.

Yes. It's

Ha! No way I would have missed that so must have been distracted when I grabbed it and forgot to talk to her again :p Thanks.

Ah, easy enough to guess what that is going off of the two BK games. Yeah, if it's what I expect, that would trivialize all traversal. I'll upgrade right away then, thanks.

So is there a pedestal at the starting point of the world that allows you to exit like Tooie? Or is the only way back to the hub via the start menu?
