Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

The arcade high score challenge in world 4 you guys...

My first 'fuck this game' moment.

I'm playing on PS4 Pro with the latest patch installed. Is Yooka's shadow when he jumps supposed to be pure black? All the other shadows have some kind of transparency to them. Even when jumping out of the water it casts a pure black shadow under Yooka. I'll try to snap a screenshot.

I personally found the boss fight quite simple, but the third phase literally has no way to get to him without jumping. There are constant lines of three logs in a row taking up the entire ramp. How did you get past that without jumping?

How did you get past the three logs in a row if you didn't jump?

If you are careful you can easily squeeze through the gap between the logs. I believe I timed it for the middle and right log each time.

edit: Since I played well before release, I didn't even think about jumping. That probably would have been much easier.

It's supposed to help you pinpoint his location in the air from the ground.

Could be intentional. I haven't played the game yet but 3D plaformers need a visible shadow under your character otherwise people have a hard time judging their jumps. I remember in the trailer Yooka had a normal shadow cast to the side and another that appeared under him when he jumped.

Yeah I know why it's there. But his regular shadow has some transparency to it. It's grey transparent. The one under him is solid black. It looks so weird and out of place. It looks like it's not showing as intended.

I know what you mean but it's intentional, it was in the toy box demo and the marketing media I believe.

"Eghuhguhgeghuegg. Eghuhgeggoough. oughheffhehfhuhge."

Such an annoying noise.

OK, noping out at Dr Quack's quiz. Frustrating.

Wow, I didn't expect it to be that dark. I still think it's intentional. Since it's essential to your gameplay expirience they wan't to make sure it's visible over everything else, even if you're in the shade.

So, is the consensus here that if you loved Banjo Kazooie, and DK64 and games like that, that you'll love this? I'd be getting the PS4 version and I loved those games!!

This talk about orchestrated vs non orchestrated soundtrack.....is it being updated if I heard correctly on here?

You know, I never noticed the double shadows until you pointed it out. Honestly, from a gameplay design perspective, it's really helped me on multiple occasions to land some tricky jumps. So I'd rather have a weird visual thing than frustrating deaths personally. Does look odd though, you aren't wrong.

Maybe it changed in the patch since you played, because I just played the third phase of that boss and there was endless waves of 3 logs touching each other with no gap between them.

I liked the World 3 boss quite a bit. Haven't expanded any worlds yet, I plan to check out all of the worlds and get all the moves, then go back to fully complete everything. Also, reviewers who complained about not being able to find new worlds in the hub clearly weren't paying attention to what characters said or what moves they learned.

This game is perfect for Banjo and DK64 fans. And yes, the orchestral soundtrack is being added in later.

I love classic Banjo enough to push through Yooka's faults, but I don't think it means you'll definitely love YK. I mean, maybe you will. Most people here some to and I'm only an hour in. I'm enjoying it for what it is, but it's not going to have the BK impact and I can understand why it scored the way it did (again, very early on so things can change).

I both love and hate this game. It could be all the years of gaming since B-K that have made me more critical, but the controls in some instances make this game super unfun. But the game that surrounds it is so jolly with terrific music and goofy writing that I can't help but want to go back for more, even when it pisses me off. I think I understand the mixed response.

Other gripes:

World 2 is a mess. I think I spent most of my time there wondering what I was supposed to be doing. Moved on to World 3 as soon as I could.

I don't like how so much of what you can accomplish in a world seems to be at the mercy of moves you can't acquire yet in that world. I feel like if they wanted to give you the freedom to pick up any move you wanted at any time, they ought to have made it so Trowzer sells ALL of them at all times--or at the very least has them listed but unavailable-- so you can also get a sense of what moves are coming up. I think this would help with navigating the world because you'll see an impossible task and say "oh, I probably need X move for that" and not waste your time on it.

On the other side of that, it's also frustrating to come to a challenge and assume you don't have the right move yet and skip it, when in fact you had the move all along but forgot you had it (looking at you, Sonar)

I don't know. I think this sort of janky presentation is part and parcel of this type of game because I certainly remember frustrating moments from B-K. But is that a good thing? I don't want the games to be easy, for sure, but I also don't want to be yelling at my TV because I keep slipping off a slippery rock surface in a dark cave. Maybe we were all more patient back in '98. I think the polish this game has in terms of its visuals and sound are very much at odds with the gameplay and that's annoying. Why are you so pretty but so frustrating??

It's kind of hidden and took me a bit too. Bubble into the water in the big filled room(big room leading off of the library with the fish tank in the middle where you learn bubble form) and you will see a grate with a pumpkin that you can walk past and swim up to the level. Easy to miss actually.

Holy cow man, I spent a good hour in that room trying to figure it out. For the longest time I thought that floating book was the grand tome and I kept trying to find the the thing to stand on to open it up.

I only had 5 minutes with it on PS4 yesterday but what I saw looked and played great. Setup wasn't as great as BK but not really why I'm here.

The name on the shipwreck at part is hilarious.

The camera... holy shit is it annoying. It doesn't help that moving it around feels so floaty and sluggish.

The rolling move is clunky as hell... why didn't they just allow you to turn around on the spot like talon trot?

Besides those complaints (oh, and that god awful arcade game in the first world), the game is pretty decent so far. It's cute enough and has enough collectables and exploration to keep me going.

I realize people wanted a 2017 Banjo game. That doesn't mean you have to bring all the jank with it. (Hell, BK had less jank than this so far...)

Quick question for those that ordered the game through Amazon UK, anyone else had their order delayed? (apologies if this has already been asked). I was looking forward to getting it today, tempted to cancel my order and go digital instead if its not dispatched today.

So what's the verdict? Is it worth picking up if I've been missing Crash and Spyro etc? :P

Up to the final world and if you hold reverence for Spyro and especially Banjo, than you will enjoy this one. It is heavy on the exploration and discovery with mostly solid challenges for earning collectibles, with a small mix of frustrating ones(though the good outweighs the poor).

Really? So it doesn't look like the GB QL? Around the 22 minute mark.

The third wave proves you are meant to jump and not weave. Even in the QL it is the same and that is where they were forced to learn to jump the logs.

I've finished exploring world 4 pre-expansion and I have to say it's the weakest world so far. That being said there are some great moments like the boss fight.

I managed to get 100% on the second world.

Hmm, how to you get past the wind?
I'm too dumb to figure it out, lol.

In the first world? You need a move you learn later in the game.

So what's the verdict? Is it worth picking up if I've been missing Crash and Spyro etc? :P

Yeah. So far the game is a solid 8/10 for me.

Yes, thanks!

Definitely! Although it definitely leans more towards Spyro than Crash.

Regardless it is a great game that nailed the 90s feel. The only knock I have against it is that the camera can get a little frustrating and I noticed some weird jankiness on the mine cart levels. Other than that it is 90s platforming bliss updated for the modern era.

My advice is to crank up camera sensitivity immediately, as the standard settings feel like you are trying to moving a freighter.

Just so everyone knows there is a super secret collectible in each world that doesn't show up on the totals screen. I assume you need to collect them all to unlock the athlete tonic.

For those of you that played the Toybox, did anyone solve the riddle yet?
I have ground pounded every rock near a tree on Shipwreck Creek and haven't found anything.

Any backers of the physical version receive their copy yet? Still waiting on mine for PS4. Really glad to hear all the positive impressions!
