Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

I'm missing three quills and a ghost writer in the final world. I have no clue where they are.

EDIT: Found the ghost writer! Sadly the quills weren't with it though.

Tried the backer code earlier with one and an otherwise crummy PC (4GB RAM, dual-core CPU) and it looked surprisingly good and ran well, pretty much like the PS4 version visually, though not quite locked 60fps. Yours should be more than enough for that methinks.
Sounds great, thank you so much!

Having a lot of fun so far, but the game runs kind of poorly on my computer, even though it should easily be able to run it. And lowering the settings hasn't changed the performance at all, so I'm going to just assume it's the game.

This game pretty much feels exactly how I'd imagine Banjo-Threeie playing.

The annoying voices and having to unlock basic moves are something that should have been left behind with Banjo, other than that having more fun with the game than I did replaying Banjo recently. It's nice being able to see things in the environment and the controls are really tight

Holy crap the last world's super secret collectible was hidden really well.

Now to get back to hunting for the quills.

Just finishing playing for three hours while sticking to the expanded Tribalstack Tropics. I'm loving it so far! The platforming is fast and tight, so getting around is still as nice as it was in the Toybox. And the writing just oozes the charm and humor of the Rare days. I'm already in love with Rextro. Managed to get 16 Pagies before I stopped. This is definitely shaping up to be the Banjo game I hope for when I backed it.

It's certainly not perfect though. The Kartos minecart section and first Rextro game were pretty medicore. I didn't hate them like most people, but they definitely need some more polish.

I've played for 2 hours plus and am enjoying it immensely.. feels like Banjo 3.. playing on PC and everything is 60fps with no hitches or drops, no tearing.. looks gorgeous

Now that I'm past the intro, I'm hoping there's less sort of setup dialogue and I'll feel less inundated by unskippable "yip yap yi-yi-ya-yap" sounds. I'm also gonna mess with the options and see if I can find a happy medium for these camera settings. I'd at least love to be able to see my name in the credits.

NOPE! Uninstalled. I'm done. Glad I'm not the only one having camera issues this bad. I hope you all enjoy. I'll get the soundtrack someday. :*(

I'm liking the game, but I CAN see myself dropping it. And it's definitely a BK successor, I half expect that if it's a failure it's the inverse of Mighty No. 9: drama-free leadup without many serious delays (shockingly fast for a Kickstarter really), and if anything similar to the source material to a fault rather than throwing all sorts of dumb shit in.

EDIT: And the voices... I'm mainly bugged by not being able to skip past them in the cutscenes (or maybe having a fast forward feature.) I knew what I was going to be getting into here if it was a faithful successor, and in small doses it's kind of charming. But as a result I'm more than happy to skip past that with only a few wah wahs thrown in.

One thing about the voices

I don't like Yooka's voice. The voice doesn't really match his voice lines when jumping and stuff. Banjo's "guh, yup, guh" was a lot better and sounded like how his actual voice in the game was. Yooka's voice is just boring and lacks personality.

Yesterday I rated the game an 8 but my opinion is starting to drop on it after being nearly done with the first two worlds. I would say this game is a great love letter to Banjo-Kazooie and its fans but in no way is it the successor I have been waiting 17 years for. They definitely listened to people on the number of collectibles, and it is great how much there is to do in the worlds, but there is so many bad design decisions and frustrating challenges all the time. Things like minecarts and Rextro's minigames shouldn't be so frustrating and I shouldn't be getting lost in the hub. My barometer for if the game was fucking great was if it beat Banjo-Tooie and instead I am looking way more fondly on Tooie. Still having a ton of fun with the game though so I don't have any Kickstarter remorse. I do hope the game gets a sequel and the team goes back to the drawing board instead of going the "bigger = better" approach.

I think Yooka sounds quite laid back.

I will say, this is sort of how my progression in playing went. Brought back great memories, was nostalgia filled, and magical... but the more I played the more it started to fall apart for me. Some people are adamant that the game is perfect as it is and almost pushing the game as if it can or does no wrong. Happy for them but it just starts to show it's issues the longer I played. That said, I'm still supporting the game and getting it on the PS4 as my review code was for Xbox One.

Is there bad stuttering on PC for anyone else when panning the camera (pretty much all the time that is)? I tried from Fastest to Fantastic or whatever it's called, same problem. The actual game seems to be running at 60fps but it's very stuttery, hard to explain. I'm at the very beginning.

On a 960m it CAN do 60 fps but will nose dive easily, at least in the opening area. I'm going to see if disabling V-Sync in-game and forcing triple buffering through the Control Panel helps, it seemed to feel better without the in-game V-Sync on at least.

And I do think some modern touches could have helped a lot, maybe take some cues from RPGs afterall. Perhaps not quest indicators or anything, but a list of known pagies and a map as you explore a stage. Honestly I think a lot of issues are easier to overlook BECAUSE we haven't really been getting 3D platformers lately, not like this anyway; I'm guessing it kind of got torn in half, open world games and especially RPGs tore away the "work for the objective" gameplay fans, while those who wanted skill based challenges were served with different, commonly 2D platformers or even endless runners. I guess in a sense I REALLY would like a good, exploration focused adventure that just had some more serious jumping gameplay thrown in? Jumping's fun, I'd like it to be more seriously a gameplay mechanic again for those kinds of games.

I got all of the pagies! I just have to find the health extender in the hub world and then I'm off to the final boss.

An hour in and holy shit this like a soulless husk of my favorite game. It's like a sad attempt at trying to replicate the charm of Kazooie, but failing in almost every regard. Instead of being its own thing it settles on a poor imitation of what once made them great - and like, I get that the point was to make a game that returns to the form of the original Kazooie, but this does that in the most lazy, unpolished way imaginable.

Hoping it gets better than world 1 because damn this is terrible. I get how mega man fans must have felt with mighty number 9 and I hate that I'm saying that.

At least grant Kirkhope is still a badass

Turning off in-game Vsync helped a lot on my end. Game is playable now! Still not buttery smooth but it's fine.

Seven hours in and this is pretty much what they said it would be. On a personal level I'm loving it, but I can't in good conscience recommend it to others, unless they're very aware of what they're getting into. This is a nineties 3D platformer through and through. The camera is horrible and they kept some of the more frustrating parts of these types of games. It's such a feel good game, I can't help but feel that's a mistake. It should be cosy entertainment, not throw your controller at the wall, which I've no doubt many will feel like it is. Could also use a few more checkpoints in places. Yeah yeah, I know, the bane of modern gaming is the lack of difficulty, but getting to the end of Gloomy Gem Cave and missing a single quill, which makes you start over, is just not fun to most.

But I'm loving it and hope we get a sequel, with a more modern approach to camera and difficulty.

Trust me, you don't. The gap in quality between this and MN09 is huge. If you think this is mediocre then you would detest Mn09.

World 1 is one of the weaker worlds IMO.

My world ranking from best to worst.

How do you change resolution/downsample? I select 4k in the options but the res stays at 1080p even though I have DSR levels set in my Nvidia cp.

One of the guys from Gamexplain went on a huge rant about that lol. I've been ignoring it for that reason
I can see why.
It's super easy if you come back with one of the late game special moves you learn from Towzer.
I thought about this, but I didn't really see another move helping out; just mostly rolling.
Just finished that on my 4th try. Not as annoying as I thought it would be. It really helps to slow the roll as much as possible when platforming.

The rolling is really twitchy though, especially when they put quills on the ramps; makes it difficult. Also the part near the end where you roll down onto a platform but have to time it right, I ended up just rolling through the platform and you have to start the very beginning if you die.

Aside from some technical issues, I feel as though I got what I was promised - a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie. I played for four hours straight and plan to keep going after taking a break.

Slightly off topic, but my copy of Rare Replay finally came in today, so I'm set as far as collectathons for a while!

I backed both Mighty No. 9 and Yooka Laylee and I completely agree with you. I have seen a lot of comparison to Mighty No. 9 but this game delivered so much better on its promises. Mighty No. 9 was a game I couldn't bring myself to play after 2 stages and frankly pisses me off to this day. Yooka Laylee is disappointing, but I don't feel completely burned by the game and developer here. I plan to finish the game since I'm having a good enough time and hope Playtonic comes back stronger with their next game.

Damn

I paid $40 for this game and I'm so disappointed. This feels like Banjo Kazooie made by a b-team with some of the worst platforming I've played in years. I really wish I bought this physical now so I could at least return it.

Newest nVidia firmware won't let this run on the dGPU what the fuck. Will see if a re-install fixes that up.

EDIT: Seems that it was fixed after downgrading by turning off the default to nVidia GPU as the general setting and enabling it just for Yooka Laylee. Will need to see if the new firmware is OK now.

Idk, man. Few games have made me this sleepy right off the bat. And it's like, mega man fans had like 20 games lmao. Banjo fans got Kazooie which was great and Tooie which wasn't that great and that's it. Fast forward to the 360 days and the promise of a new Banjo game and they give fans the middle finger by turning it into a car Lego game. Years later, the original creators crowdfunding a "true sequel" to the original Banjo-Kazooie and...what we get is this. A stale, boring, lifeless clone that seems to miss the point entirely.

It may not be a worse game than mighty number 9, but given the circumstances I have to imagine the disappointment I'm feeling right now is pretty on par with what they experienced.

But I'm glad to hear you think it gets better. I'll keep working my way through it hoping that I start to wake up.

Just played for 2 hours straight, really enjoying this game.

Though the controls take some getting used to as it's pretty strict and the camera can be a bit much.
I'd like to be able to jump into a roll and I feel like acceleration of the roll should be a little slower when you aren't moving the analogues all the way.

Otherwise, I'm loving the art style, characters, animation, music, visuals, lame jokes and general style it's much higher quality than I was expecting and it looks fantastic.

This is Banjo 3!

So I just caved and got it on PC.

My 1060 3Gb apparently cannot run it in 4K, but it runs nicely in 1440p.

Played one hour so far, this game is great so far and it fits the Banjo's successor bill perfectly.

My biggest complaint is the camera, it's just bad. Hopefully it will be re-arranged later.

I'm still in the first world but I'm really enjoying the game so far. As a huge Banjo fan this game really brings a smile to my face.

I've played the game for 4 hours and 30 minutes, al I can say at the moment is : I LOVE IT!

I love the music, the platforming, the "voices", the world, so far it is everything I expected when I backed the kickstarter, is Banjo Threeie.

I'm playing the PC version, on my tv using the wii U controller pro, I have finished world 1 with 19 pagies, killed the first boss, and did the arcade minigame twice, so far I haven't had a single problem with the controller.

I hope this game is somewhat successful, I *really* want Playtonic to develop more games.

And I backed the game, but am still waiting for my physical copy to arrive. :(

I think I'm done with video game Kickstarters. This is the third that I've been burned when it comes to physical editions/rewards. There's no excuse for backers to not have the game before the general public whatsoever.
I was okay with not getting it early, but I'm fairly miffed that it didn't arrive today. It's also annoying having no earthly clue if it's even been mailed yet.

I don't know if it's an engine problem or what, but the odd stuttering of movable objects is just so out of place. e.g, a barrel will stutter as it moves if you're pushing it. Just so bizzare.

Put in 2 and a half hours tonight, had to drag myself away from the console. Really liking it so far.

Will say that the quiz bit was ok, but if it happens again (and I hear it does?) it will get really annoying. Really wanted to like the first arcade game (the racing one), but really didn't. I think the worlds (or the first at least, only one I've explored in any depth) could stand to start off a little smaller, and I could do without the slow camera pans over all the new stuff when you expand.

Really enjoying just exploring though, not really knowing what I might come across. The protagonists control super smoothly. Getting abilities has been gratifying so far, but I remember that getting less interesting in BK towards the latter half. Excited to dig deeper into the game tomorrow night!

Yeah, not having any sort of tracking for the package just compounds my frustration. To make matters worse, they are sending them with a signature required so if me or my wife aren't home when it comes, they won't deliver it. We both have jobs and are gone during the day which is when most couriers make their rounds.

So I backed the game, but I didn't get it early. I didn't get it on-time. And I'm most likely going to have to go and pick it up myself at whichever service's distribution center.

Not a good first impression, and most likely the nail in the coffin on my KS pledging. If I could back out of my Bloodstained pledge, I would. I'm done helping to bring projects to fruition only to not get it before or simply on-time with everyone else who didn't.

And I'm sorry for the bitching/venting... I have been counting the days until this game's release and not having it on release day was crushing.

Have 20 pagies and so far I'm mostly liking it.

My biggest gripe is that I'm experiencing performance issues on a 1070, which I didn't expect at all since the toybox ran perfectly and it's not like the game has that much going on.
