Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

Sure that would be cool but the game would be exclusive to Nintendo systems...so....why not purchasing the studio?
I mean...Nintendo won't do this because Nintendo (and I don't understand why they're not buying studios) but a return of old rare developers and a successor to YL with Nintendo publishing....woah...
Donkey Kong Switch with Playtonic would be a dream come true for me.

Apparently they intend to become a two-game studio where teams are working on separate games like the Rare days, so they could potentially work on Tooka-Laylee while also doing this other one.

Then I'll take a direct sequel to this and either a 2D platformer like DKC or a kart racer. I'll be very sad if this doesn't sell well enough to warrant a sequel.

Some tasks are definitely dividing opinions pretty sharply.

But does *anyone* like the Mine cart challenges?

I do. They're not as tight as gliding on lines in Ratchet & Clank, and perhaps they should get rid of the ability to raise/lower the speed since that can be confusing to some people, but by and large I enjoy them. A lot.

I want them and Kartos to return in the next game.

Nintendo should buy Playtonic Games.

Nah. Better to keep them independent and have their games on all platforms. However Microsoft should greenlight something like this for One/Scorpio. Something that isn't a service game and gives fans of single player games something to look forward to.

Question: Do you need powers or moves from other worlds to collect all pagies in a previous world? In other words, Im still in world 1, do I need moves from world 2 to get all pagies in world 1?

Can I get some impressions on this game? I love Banjo Kazooie and Tooie (the latter in particular) but I've heard some major mixed reactions to this and that it's another Mighty No. 9.

As a big BK and BT fan, it's great. Haven't played might no 9 yet but if it's like this but for MegaMan I'm sold.

But yeah yooka laylee rules

It's not another Mighty No. 9. The game is great and fun, but it also has occasional issues. Reviewers either went way overboard in their criticism or didn't understand the game they were reviewing.

Does this game run alright on low-end integrated graphics PC's? Asking for a school project

No. According to PC Gaming Wiki integrated graphics cards are not supported.

Donkey Kong Switch with Playtonic would be a dream come true for me.

I'd love to see them get a chance at something like DK. I think it's pretty much a given they have the talent and the pedigree but give them a good budget and some guidance within a franchise they have to polish enough for Nintendo to be happy to release and I think they'd knock it out of the park.

I'm right with you man. I really hope this does well because to me this game is great but most of all it's a promise and potential for them to deliver on in the next game and a big part of what I want them to improve for the next game is the minecart sections are Rextro.

I reckon if they nail them down right they could be my favourite parts of the game but currently they're likeable but not gonna get me to come back to replay them just for fun just a nice change of pace.

Well into world 3 now and I am still having a good time with it. Only expanded the first world and did most objectives in that one.

Here is my fix list so far:

-A smaller window between the roll and performing an attack (or none). It annoys me that I have to stop rolling, wait a tiny bit, and then attack instead of just attack straight out of rolling. The attack>jump>jump>attack>glide jump pattern works well, why not let players string together other moves as well? It would make the core gameplay more fluid.
-Introduce a retry button in the start menu for challenges.
-If you retry a challenge/mission, don't have players slog trough dialogue again.
-For the love of god make (repeated) dialogue skippable during the quiz sections.
-Lower volume of the voices a tad, and a bit lower frequency of "words" if possible too.
-Lower score thresholds for winning some of the minigames.
-Make the camera less jumpy and make the more sensitive setting default.
-Add the ability to do one jump when gliding from a ramp. During the first boss I got hit twice without doing anything wrong, because he blew me back and there were still logs on the ramp, with no possibility to dodge.

I'm surprised how few KS backers online I see selling their codes. With much better (and much worse) reviewed previous major KS games there were tons of codes on CAG and BST. Here, very few. So, I'm taking that to mean reviews had a much smaller impact on the backers and potentially the wider audience this time around.

The ring races remind me so much of Donkey Kong 64.

Ah nostalgia.

At a good pace so far and I haven't unlocked the 5th world still.

Anybody got some tips for that Kartos track in the Casino, it seems way short, I feel like I missed a loop or something.

Also that Hurdle Hijinx, ugh I can't possibly beat Rextro's the way I'm so trash at that game.

It's amazing and the reviews are dead wrong.

Does this game run alright on low-end integrated graphics PC's? Asking for a school project

Nope, my surface pro 3 does ok running GTA 5 with everything on the lowest settings but it struggles to even hit 30 fps with YL on the fastest setting and lowest, blurriest resolution. It could do with some optimization.

Always take the low road and be smart about which barrels you blast!

Game fits a certain need for the genre. Yes it could be better, but it could be wayyyy worse. Its def a fun game that scratches that itch. Here is hoping part 2 knocks it out the park fully.

While I don;t like it as much as B-K or B-T (Miles better than DK64 though) I think it is still a great game with a few niggles here and there. The game is nowhere close to Mighty No. 9 quality wise.

I don't know if I've seen a game where the reviewers so greatly missed the mark. To be fair, this game has unique circumstances surrounding it in that it's intentionally being a nineties platformer with modern enhancements. This is what they promised us during the kickstarter and is what the backers wanted hence the huge success off the kickstarter. The reviewers don't get this and are complaining about the game being stuck in the past, archaic, etc. painting this as a negative when this is exactly what BK fans wanted.

If you enjoyed the BK games, it's nigh impossible you won't enjoy this game. It's not as polished as BK because it's an indie game with a lower budget and created by a small team but lord does it have heavy BK beats all around from the music to the grunt noises the characters make, the sense of humor, transformations, and even the googly eyes on inanimate objects. It's a textbook example of what a spiritual successor is and most definitely scratches the itch for a game like Banjo. Most people actually playing the game seem to be enjoying it and I really think you will if you enjoy BK and Tooie as this incorporates elements from both. It's a very promising entry and it's exciting to imagine what they could do with a larger budget and team for a sequel so hopefully this game sells well.

What do I have to trigger to get Trowzer to show up in the spot where he teaches me Flappy Flight? I read that you just have to go to Capital Cashino and learn Reptile Rush from him, which I did, but he's still standing in the same spot where he taught me the cloak ability.

Nope. I'm proof, as are many others in this thread, and in the reviews.

It's a little annoying that people can't grasp this

My issue is its either one extreme or the other. Either your crazy if you dont agree with reviews and this is some amazing game... or its horrible and shit.

Like I feel it falls right in the middle, with more towards positive then negative... but that seems hard to grasp for some sitting as a good game with room for definite improvement.

Anyone else start getting a bunch of crashes upon reaching World 4? Game was mostly bug-free up to that point, but then I started getting crashes seemingly every 5-10 minutes during random exploration. Game freezes, black screens, then sends me back to desktop while the audio keeps playing. Doesn't save my game either, so I ended up repeating the same sequences over and over again.

And speaking of World 4, that minecart challenge can go to hell. Although
the subsequent boss fight
was fantastic. The crashes became draining but the level overall was a lot of fun. So pleased to see it turn out good after the less-than-flattering IGN video from a couple months ago.

Ok, we get that you don't like the game despite liking Banjo, But most people are in the camp where they liked Banjo and they also like this. There are exceptions for nearly everything. I'm sorry you're not enjoying it, but dollars to donuts, most Banjo fans will.

I haven't crashed in-game yet, but some occasional audio hitches. It does crash every time I exit the game, curiously enough.

For a game to be another MN9 it would have to not only be bad, but not even deliver on what it promised backers in the first place (which was a return to classic Mega Man-style action). Yooka-Laylee definitely delivers the Banjo gameplay people wanted to see again even if it is a little rough around the edges.

Anyone know? I feel like its glitched for me or something, honestly can't figure out why he isn't showing up

Did I say impossible? No, I said "nigh impossible". There's differing viewpoints on every subject in this world, of course there will be some that feel as you do. What I gave him was my opinion and I would hope anyone on this forum knows that all posts about the quality of a product are an opinion and nothing more. I also doubt many people will go off of a single post to make a purchasing decision. Your opinion is just as valid as mine but if they go through this thread or reddit, etc. they will find that a majority of BK fans that have actually played this game, enjoyed it (to varying degrees). While your opinion is a valid one, it's also an outlier and very much in the minority. I point this out not to invalidate your opinion but because when we look up a product to purchase on Amazon for instance, we like to see a positive rating but we also want to have that score averaged by a large amount of people, right? There will be some reviewers that you know have legitimate reasons for rejecting the product but if a majority are saying it's good and you already have interest in it yourself, that's what helps you pull the trigger after being on the fence. Should he go off of the few or the many's opinion? Neither of us can guarantee he or she will share our viewpoint but one side has more backers and that is the weight I'm putting into my admittedly brazen statement of "nigh impossible". I stand by what I said even if there are exceptions out there like yourself. There always are.

I'm not sure, hopefully you find a solution! I think I got the flying power up before I even got that reptile rush attack because I left the casino world early without seeing him for some reason. I don't know what the trigger is for getting him to move to that other spot though, perhaps you just have to find a few pagies in the casino world?

Well damn, the Casino level looks amazing in the PC version at "fantastic" and 60fps.

But the Kartos challenge in this level.... i just can't beat it. So no 100% for me then : /

I'm sorry, that's just a completely counter-productive point to make.

It frames disagreement as a minority, a small exception to be dismissed. Let people state their opinions without trying to frame it within a context you don't have, please. It's condescending and dismissive, and you don't actually have the data to support it.

Positive posts on Reddit and GAF are not a representative sample, doubly so when you have posts like yours suppressing dissent.

World 5 also captures that Banjo feeling really well. If you like world 3 then I think you'll really like world 5.
I didn't really like the 5th world. Not a big fan of segmented floating areas.

Also, I wish the final boss
had health here and there. I think I got near the end, with the missiles, but only had one butterfly left and died

I'm sorry but I believe I stated that his opinion is as valid as mine and that I wasn't trying to invalidate his point of view so I don't feel I was condescending at all as I framed my post under the context of making a purchase decision as that's ultimately what the question was geared towards. When making a purchase decision and pouring through reviews for a product, a majority is very much a factor if not 'the' factor to tip the scale in a decision process. In my Amazon example, I stated that there are valid reviews that reject the product despite a majority rating the product with a high score. It's not that his viewpoint isn't valid, my point is that when looking at a purchase decision for a product you already have interest in, it makes more sense to go with the majority than with the minority.

When the question is asked on GAF I'm going to say yes, it most certainly is a representative sample. If the one asking the question desires further metrics, they will do further research and pose the question in other forums and mediums to produce a larger, more detailed collective.

I can see how stating Tom Nook's opinion was in the minority and an outlier can come off mean and dismissive and if you took it that way Tom, I apologize but again, it was in the context of weighing a purchase decision, not an argument of philosophies. I continue to stand by what I said but wanted to clarify the context of my statement, it was not meant to be mean spirited nor to "suppress" opposing viewpoints. Just add more weight to mine ;)

If they didn't want to buy Rare back in the 2000s, why would they want them now, especially such a small group?

Hmm, I think they're pretty much the same. But maybe I'm in the minority.
Don't get me wrong, I love love love Banjo Kazooie but I have the feeling that most of the criticism is blinded by nostalgia. I replayed BK and Tooie three months ago and imo YL is the perfect successor to these games. Pretty much every complaint about YL could be said about Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie. It's almost the same game.
Of course you may love the old characters more than Yooka, Laylee, Trowzer...etc... but the game itself IS Banjo Kazooie/ Tooie...it just has a different name and new characters.

And btw: I also don't get the complaints by Gamexplain(I like them) that the characters are forgettable. I mean...what? These are typical Rare characters. They're funny and unique...and the design is great.

Those games came out in 98 and 2000s. You can't really compared that to a game in 2017. So saying that BK and Tooie have the same flaws doesn't excuse YL since this game should be the one that fixes all of the problems.

My issue is its either one extreme or the other. Either your crazy if you dont agree with reviews and this is some amazing game... or its horrible and shit.

Most reviewers fall in the middle. Most agree that it is a decent game, but it falls short of what they wanted. Only a few reviews called it a piece of crap and those are outliers.

Overall, most seems to hold the same opinion as you. A lot of the positive about, but the game have flaws or design choices that make the game nearly unbearable for some.

I thought Tower of Tragedy was a big step back from Furnace Fun, but at least it still had the unique presentation and competitive element. And yet Yooka-Laylee takes many steps back from even that
Yeah, it's just bizarre that they made they the decision to once again keep the quiz mechanic but once again made it simpler and gave the player less options than the previous iterations. Like, Furnace Fun, as an actual board game, naturally gives the player the most options: do you take a really elongated path around the board to collect as many skip-cards as possible for the questions/challenges you're not good at? Do you take a shorter path through the board that risks going through a few instant-death spots, or do you take a longer path that means going through more squares but fewer of them risking instant death? And stuff like that.

Tower of Tragedy, as a quiz show format, gave the player less options, but at least there was still some risk/reward in it. Namely, in the form of passing questions: if you get a hard question/question type you're not sure of, you can pass, but there's no guarantee the next question will be any easier and that's also potentially putting yourself at a time disadvantage if you make use of it too much. That may not be much, but at least it's something.

But the quiz in Yooka-Laylee doesn't even have that much from Tooie. It's just flat-out: do you know the answer, or not? No board game with multiple paths an options, no passing mechanic (because you're not competing against anyone or trying to beat a high score), or anything. Just flat-out do you know the answer or not with no deeper mechanics or options at all, in boring rooms with nothing interesting going on.

Just don't know how they manage to decide to keep it around, but keep making it worse and apparently not getting what people liked about them originally which would have actually made them worth keeping around. It's bizarre.

Review wise yes... but I can't tell you how many posters I see, not just here, make claim that all these reviewers dont get it. Dont want it. Or just are wrong. I mean I like the game but some folks push the narrative the your absolutely nuts if you dont like this as mucb as prior games in the genre. I dont know why it has to be that way.

It's not your place to add weight to your opinion, especially when failing to understand what a representative sample is.

State what you think and let others aggregate opinions as they wish. "Adding more weight" to yours, by construction, is minimizing everyone else's.

Anyways, back to the game.

FML... Downloaded my backer exclusive edition of the game tonight and started to play it on my mid-2012 MacBook Pro. It runs like hot garbage even on the "Fastest" graphics settings. It runs a little better on my work MBP which is about a year old, but still, talk about a buzzkill.

It's nice that I can use my Dual Shock 4 to play it though, at least!

I feel all reviews have merit if they explain their points well enough. Jim's review brought up some good points, but his final score was a big 'what?'. I mean, 2/10 should be reserved for Sonic 2006 type a game, something that is fundamentally broken and buggy.

So, I disagree with 'the reviews are wrong!' stance. I love Breath of the Wild, but I wouldn't call it the 'best game ever!'. But I won't say that anyone who feels that way is wrong.

Also, this is a problem with all games, not just YL. A game is either the 'best of all time' or 'it's a flaming piece of shit'. A game isn't allowed to be just average or good, it's either one extreme or the other.

I think I have a bug. In Moodymaze how do you drop the seeds to plant? I used thr air attack on the 2 ones below and it worked, but I can't for the life of me do the same with the one on the top floor. Tried licking it too, nothing happens.
