You can't buy a XBOX series x/s in Canada

Welcome to the club. In my country problems started around fall last year and there were no major restocks. So you're either forced to ship from another country or buy from local scalpers.

Retailers obviously grew tired of having stock sat on shelves for months.

Sales have plummeted and with each PlayStation game announcement from Microsoft Xbox's future looks bleak.

Barely anyone wants them now and retailers know it.

The thing I dont understand, is how the hell XBox's sales were up YoY. I guess it was people rushing out to buy consoles before the price went up and they will crater next month.

They are shipping these out in small quanitties due to lack of demand.

Same things been happening in uk and europe.

With the price increase demand will be even less then what we have now.

That's probably what happened.

Circanas tracking period for april was from April 06, 2025 - May 03, 2025

MS annouced the price inceased on first of may IIRC, so people probably rushed out to buy an xbox from may 1st to may 3rd before the price increase could fully take effect everywhere, some retailers still had the old price for a bit.

This. Xbox are also pushing their userbase to rent games via Gamepass, so basically retailers don't get the 30% cut from the non existent software sales unlike from Sony and Nintendo.

It makes no sense business wise to stock these Xbox consoles.

The hard Gamepass did to Xbox retail is under reported.

If you find Xbox at any UK retailer these days it's usually confined to some small back corner of the gaming section.

As others have pointed out, makes sense for the retailers not to stock it for financial reasons.

Also makes sense for Xbox not to manufacture them when they are making their actual money from Steam and PS.

I suspect they are slowing down the restocking of secondary markets until the tariff situation between the U.S. and other countries calms down. You can still buy them in Canada, you just need to go to wal mart or a place that has them in stock.

But, Gamepass still works on pc and cloud devices. They make money on Gamepass.

MS has probably quietly halted manufacturing of new Xbox consoles and will just let existing stock run out and simply not replenish

It's a way to discontinue the product without actually doing any formal announcement

The US market will continue to be resupplied with remaining inventory until that's gone and then it will finally be over

Actually these prices will keep them in the market.

Selling consoles isn't that important to them right now because they can sell games on PS5 , Switch & PC . Selling consoles actually hurts them because they lose so much money each unit but now Xbox consoles are basically for people who really want a Xbox and they are selling them for profit & not for a bigger user-base.

As dumb as this sounds he has a point.

Xbox consoles were supposed to expand the market for Gamepass. But that market hit a wall. Aggressively trying to sell Xbox consoles didn't grow the Gamepass base any larger after a certain point. The point of the cheap S was easy access to Gamepass; that 15 minutes of fame has passed. Unfortunately, it also killed game sales. Meanwhile they just keep dumping money into trying to push consoles, pushing cheap subs, and investing in the Gamepass catalog. While the fruits of all that investment stagnate. MS doesn't make a lot of money on each Xbox and can't figure out how to fix that.

Now that they're a third party publisher it's pretty much shifted to "look, just buy the game. But if you do buy an Xbox, we're making out from day one. We give up on investing all this money hoping we make it all back on Gamepass. It didn't work. If you want to just leave the console on the shelf and buy some PS5 games, sounds like a plan. We're jacking the prices, and our next hardware will be an uber expensive PC because fuck it"

That's my conclusion as well. But then what the hell are they thinking about a next gen Xbox? Who will buy it and why?

I think this is where they are at TBH. They are full steam ahead of killing this generation and clearly working on their next plans of Xbox/PC. Wouldn't surprise me if we see their next "console" in Q4 next year.

I think it might actually be pretty good for a certain type of niche customer. And they get to say "see, we're not dead!"

But yeah again, niche. Most money will be made as a third party. The console will probably be a PC for people who don't like PCs and want access to the Xbox back catalog. While being very expensive, and lacking a lot of what makes PC good (like a Steam Deck).

Life finds a way.
They did say everything's an xbox. It's like how you can play doom on a heart rate monitor, you can gamespass with hair curlers.

Which would be genius. You can buy your wife some hair straighteners for Christmas and it doubles as a gift for yourself to play xbox.

it was like that in the uk for a few months was almost having to buy a second hand one from ebay but they came back in stock all of a sudden on the day they announced the price increase though I got mine at the old price.
Not looked since then if they stayed in stock. Microsoft website says they are in stock but when you go through to buy they say out of stock, same with the retailers

You can still buy one from Microsoft directly in Canada. I have bought my last couple of consoles, headsets and controllers directly through them. Generally fast shipping and I have had no issues.

I agree it is odd that the supply through the usual retailers had dried up.

ehh some say there is a few left. Nothing says that they stopped selling them all together.

On some LATAM countries, this has been the situation since October of last year. I had to order one from Amazon with international shipping.

Clearly, it's Trump pressing Microsoft to not provide Xbox Consoles to Canada! If only Canada joins US as 51st State, Canadians will get those sweet, sweet Xboxes! 😉
