Your favorite games with <70 Metacritic score

Currently. Shattered space dlc as I'm playing it right now.

But yeah, mad max. Deadly premonition. State of decay 2. All great suggestions. Nier obviously.

Rain world

Reviewers didn't understand the game. They expected an easy Metroidvania with hand holding. Nope.

This game is brutal and it takes time to learn its mechanics and ecosystem. AI is still some of the best today and the ecosystem between all species are intertwined. Your actions will also impact how they react to you.

It's the ultimate onga bunga simulator. Throwing rocks and spears. The animation system since it's procedural has technically no "move set"… well there's one that covers the main ones and it's Insanely long and not something you would memorize.

59 from critics
83 from users

That's a drastic gap

Meanwhile steam reviews

Very positive 94% all time
Overwhelmingly positive 95% recent

The community loves this game to death. Nothing else like it. The developers are legit genius programmers.

All my favorite games are rated 70 or lower; hell most of my game library/ collection is 60 or lower, and i own two thousand games. Reviews have never had a bearing on me...fuck reviews and reviewers.

Can't believe Mad Max is below 70, it was a super fun game. Terminator Resistance is below 50 and I really enjoyed it. Plus it felt like it was made by the people who actually loved the first two movies.

Some have been said already so I'll go with this:

Today you can't afford Guy Richie directing a game in your platform, yet these guys made two competent ripoff's to nobody's credit. And before Richie was mainstream. Shut down without an opportunity of making the third one.

The original NieR on on PS3/360.

I passed on the game initially because of the reviews. Then as the word of mouth was so strong and after I heard a handful of tracks from the game I got it and it became one of my fav games of all time.

Reviews could have stopped the series in it's tracks but thankfully they came back with Automata and the Replicant re-release which have been huge hits.
Nier is also one of my all time favourites
I recall Gaf generally loved it too

Alpha protocol. I can see why (gameplay was poor and the game was super buggy) but i loved that game i played it 5-6 times and i constantly got new things. Fantastic design in some aspects.

Order 1886. This i can't see why. The only issue it has is length. Gameplay was decent (people complained about qte's but there are like 3-4 in the game). Atmosphere is off the chart. Still looks great. Very nice story and world building.

I do want to try Ryse Son of Rome too since that game also got hit with the same stick as Order 1886. I' have it installed on my pc so one of these days (i do love rome as a setting too).

I loved Quake III Team Arena back in the day, but it's sitting on a 69 rating:

Also, even though I only played it to please my 5-year old son (who was mad into tractors at the time), I thought this was surprisingly fun:

It's not for everyone but I personally thought it was worth more than 69/100.

Homefront The Revolution. But only after it was heavily patched.

What games with shitty reviews below 70 did you really enjoy?
To make it fair please mention games that got major improvements over time like No Man Sky or Sea of Thieves only if you played it in the release window.

Ryse: Son of Rome (60)
State of Decay 2 (66)
Secret Files: Tunguska (66)
Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure (66)
Mafia III (68)
Mad Max (69)

:
from these Mad Max was wonderful
Tunguska - started it but got distracted but it also looked wonderul
Rome - I started it but for some reason it was set on EASY and it was boring. So will replay it from the start on normal mode.

Too many to list but the most recent is Outcast: A New Beginning.

That game is like PS2-era bliss. Legit one of the best gaming experiences I've had in ages. Just an absolute joy to play. Highly recommended.

Papa Nier is the best Nier, love this game to bits, Papa is the most ugly badass character alive.
Love Mafia 3.
Adding Biomutant which seems i'm the only one love it.
Edit: also liked The Force Unleashed on PS2 back then and iirc it didn't score well.

NieR, Catherine, God Hand, Lost Odyssey, Another Code and lower ones like Drakengard 3.
Catherine sits at 79, man

Almost gave me a heart attack. Love that game.

For me it would be:

  • Deadly Premonition: obviously
  • Atomic Heart: best Bioshock since the original. Amazing game, full of great ideas and beautiful art. One hell of a first game from the studio.

I'll concur on Mafia II + Mad Max as well.

Honorary mention to GR: Wildlands too. It's just over OP's criteria (has a 70) but man that game was fun with a couple friends. Breakpoint is actually even better now and imo would have at least an 80 if it was reviewed following the big overhaul.

Gothic 3 (63)

Not only do I still enjoy this game but it's also in my top 5 favorite ARPGs. Beautiful world with impressive micro details. One of those rare video games where there is no hand-holding. Just like with Oblivion, I often play just to explore, without any questing or even combat.

It's very hard to find games that are similar to Gothic 3, Oblivion is the closest that I've found.
Breath of The Wild had the same exploration tone but unfortunately the world felt quite empty. No proper reward for reaching places or even something special to see.

Controversial take but Duke Nukem Forever. No means a great game but I've always had a soft spot for it. The good stuff outweighs the bad I think.

Was state of decay 2 in a bad *hrm* state at launch or something? That game is sweet though I only played it way after release.

I pay zero attention to that stuff. Wouldn't even know what games I have that are at those numbers.

This gen: Star Ocean: The Divine Force. I absolutely loved this game.

Last gen: The crew (The first one) was my most played game on the ps4. Such a fun driving game.

Both these games started out weak but the more time you invested the more great they became.

The Order 1886, which has already been mentioned several times in this thread, and surprisingly this already forgotten Don't Nod game, Twin Mirror (I enjoyed it so much that I even did two playthroughs to get the platinum for it).

The game that made me care 0 about what critics and even players say is Crackdown 3, one of the funnest games of the last decade.

Hmm.. Very hard to recall for me. But Kirby's Air Ride is one.

A more recent one might be Snake Pass, which I thought was pretty good.
Snake Pass is so cute and fun. I do see how the experience gets a little old though about halfway through.

If u are fan of the genre/star ocean series there is high chance u will love that game like i did, its still better from 99% of western games anyways xD
I was surprised how much I liked this one, I liked it more than Star Ocean 6.
