The game is popular due to the cartoon and solid marketing and helped by the Pokemon phenomenon.

I believe the game holds up today thanks to the game being good.

I mean the game survived 4 seasons of GX and 2 season of ZEXAL.
No cheap game can survive that kind of anti-marketing

I can't believe all the love for Yu Gi Oh... It's a stark reminder that I'm an old fogey and that most y'all are kiddos. Hell, I was already married by the time Yu Gi Oh became popular.

Yeah, I was that asshole. Using this spell to abuse tons of enters-the-battlefield triggers to either instantly win (off Ob Nixilis' landfall or similar triggers) or get such an absurd amount of advantage over the board that it was an easy march ahead to victory. So good. Not the most efficient or effective way to win, but totally the flashiest.

Eventually I took it overboard in Commander games to the point where it bogged down games and got annoying, but for quite a long time this bad boy was my jam.

If you really want to bog down a Commander game, there's always this beast:

I thought it would work really well at protecting Ink-Treader Nephilim. It does, except it means you take 10 minutes to resolve a single spell.

Ha! Yeah that is dickery all right. I had a RANDOM DUMB STUFF LOL Starke of Rath deck that used that and Thieves' Auction and Mana Clash (which I actually killed multiple Planeswalkers with!) and other similar cards. Oh man did that get old fast.

My deck when everyone was running rush down was good old gravity bind.

And for people who ran jinzo against me

Relinquished-LCYW-EN-R-1E.png

I also had a jinzo in my deck to deal with jinzo and just suicide him. (For those who don't know the last card let me take jinzo a card that negates all trap cards and use it as an equipment card for relinquished)

I loved Yugioh, and would still like to play. Unfortunately, it seems like everyone who does play now is extremely weird and not in a good way. (No offense to anyone who does here, could just be my local scene)

Might post some individual cards later.

Man, I loved Yugioh back in the day. It was a really fun game to play. Fresh and easy enough to understand that it was lighthearted but just complicated enough to allow some strategy.

Every now and then I check in on what is happening with the game and I feel like it is beyond me now. Everything is so damn complicated. It took my 5 tries to even understand that pendulum crap combined with XYZ stuff. And when I read about strategies online, I feel like I should break out a math book. It just seems overcomplicated.

I'd love to play Yugioh again, but I mean old Yugioh. I dont think I'd have even a chance in new Yugioh. Everyone is using the new card types. The shit I see people pulling on TURN ONE should be criminal.

My favorite card was Blue-Eyes so I made it my mission to have every single card art. That's a tradition I still continue to this day. Even though I don't play the game anymore or even collect, I will still hit ebay and buy any new blue eyes just to keep the collection going. I even have an old Bandai Blue Eyes, though it's a bit beat up.

TBQH Old yugioh broke down into
Jinzo+Axe of Despair= WIN
Also it had a higher ATK = Win mentality. Not to mention shit like the YataLock or ridiculously broken cards like Envoy of the End and Graceful Charity

Right now YGO has thousands of different strategies, which makes casual play pretty exciting.
Also...You should see the shit I can pull with a Blue-Eyes deck on turn one...

Going to need some more details here...

Those cards were a promotion for Pokemon: The First Movie. I got one and showed it one of the other kids in my class back when we were all in elementary school. He got mad because he considered himself a Pokemon expert and decided that it must be fake because it doesn't look like other Pokemon cards and tore the front off of it to see if it was fake.

Here's the Bulbapedia page for the card itself.

The card technically is playable though. It has one Attack for 40 damage that costs two
Psychic energy.

Technically.

Edit: Nope. Banned. But it is functional.

The exact same thing happened to me with a YGO Obelisk Card...

Got a good few of my favourites in the OP. I was a fan of most 1900ATK 4 star Yugioh cards in the day and Chaos Emperor Dragon was the crown jewel of my deck in my dying days of yugioh. I think that was the last expansion I played, might've bought a few packs from the following one and played a bit. I can't remember.

I actually got a Charizard in my last every pack of base set Pokémon. My aunt found one of those starter collection boxes that had a deck, some packs a coing and bag or something for cheap a while after they stopped printing the base set and it had a bunch of base set packs and I got Charizard in the last pack. I was so hyped to get it.

Shout outs to Ancient Mew that I bought for like £2 off a kid in the toilets at school because his brother worked at the cinema and took a bunch of those cards.

Damn I quite liked this game. Greg Maddux was so good.

Ok I'll ask: what the heck is this and why is it so cool? Are there any other sport TCG's?

180px-DarkCharmeleonTeamRocket32.jpg

Best card artwork ever. plus i love Charmeleon.

I don't remember how much love the Team Rocket set got (I think it was the 3rd or 4th expansion?) but the art on some of the cards are insane.

Even more raw fucking power.

Holy shit. Thank you. I was going to include this in the OP but couldn't remember the card's name. I got that in my very first VS pack ever.

Who paid you to grab Dr. Pavel?

It was basically baseball in card form. It came with a baseball diamond mat that you played on. The batter card would have its own stats and you used that and the pitcher's stats to determine what rolls equal which type of hit or out. Of course it was like all dice rolls, but it was a neat concept.

I think I remember this now. That's pretty awesome! I'd love to see this updated for today's market. My first idea for a card would be "A-Rod Apology Tour: Remove all PED tokens from one character on your bench and subtract -1 skill from selected card's hit."

Yugioh kinda?
UAMidfielder-NECH-EN-R-1E.png

You even get to "tag in" players from the bench (i.e. hand).
Really cheap deck by the way. All commons and rares.

I played Yugioh up until right before Synchro became a big deal. It's my favorite TCG :)

The game was called MLB showdown. Me and my brothers used to play it a lot. You could mix and match players, had team funds that prevented overpowered teams, pitching vs batting stats mixed with a 20 side dice roll and the game had a great sense of collectible.

I've got a whole stack of these unopened in my garage. Pokemon was like my 3rd gameboy game growing up, and I was working at a movie theater when the movie came out.

If I remember correctly there was this card, and the 3 legendary birds that you could get from the packages.

Don't think they'll ever be worth anything, but that ancient mew card was dope.

Flip Mystical Paralysis, exhaust Doom to exhaust one of their characters, then replay a new Doom, turn Mystical Paralysis face down, and use it again. Flawless.

From .hack//ENEMY. One of the dumbest cards I've ever seen. Stack your deck with a 5+ destiny card and win the game. So awesome.

also, "Plot Twist" is pretty much the best name for a card type ever

Since we seem to have a small handful of VS fans in this thread, I'd just like to remind everyone that the game is supposed to be relaunched at Gencon this year with a Living Card Game format. Game engine is said to be unchanged, and the cards will be a mix of old and new. Definitely keep an eye on it.

Delicious first turn synchro, my blue eyes deck is so hilarious to run. Everyone hates maiden with the eyes of blue because of it

So glad to see some Star Wars CCG love. Used to play all the way up until the Ep. 1 set came out.

We have a Batman starter set (or two?) that I have yet to really figure out how to play.

I really enjoyed VS System. The game was really well designed, and initially captured the feel of what you would expect from a comic book beatdown. I think my favorite decks were an Emperor Joker mill deck and a Neutron deck. I never bothered to take those to competitions (I generally was a lot more 'traditional' in my deck choices when I was playing at those, but some of the card interactions that I was playing with online via OCTGN were pretty funny and enjoyable to run. Especially when you go up against someone who has no idea of what is about to happen.

My favorite 'competitive deck' had to be Teen Titans though. I know a lot of people didn't like the Roy Harper/TTG/Press the Attack abuse, but when I first built a Teen Titans deck and really got around to playing it, I realized it scratched all the itches of a combo deck that I wanted in the game.
