Your favourite racing circuits...

This is a thread I've been meaning to make for a while. With so many fantastic racing games that's been released in recent years and months and with many more to come, I thought it'd be interesting to see what people regard as their favourite racing circuits of all time.

This is a pretty unrestrictive thread...any game where racing (either against the clock or against the opponent) is the objective is eligable. So that could be GT4, Burnout 3, Mario Kart, Uniracer, Sonic R or SSX3. Your reason for picking that circuit is also unrestrictive...could be the course design, background design, music, whatever. All I ask is that you name the game, the format (or formats), and if possible the track itself. If you wanna post pics showing the course or video links to a great course run, that's cool too. And if you have a wishlist for courses you'd love to see in a racing game (be they real or imagined), that's also cool. Also feel free to make mutiple posts if you remember other circuits after the fact. And don't think you need to type out chapters like I've done...I'm just psycho like that. :lol

So with all that out the way, here are some of my favourite circuits ever in (sort of) chronlogical order...

outrun_a.png

Seaside stage - OutRun (arcade, Master System, XBox)

The moment I saw and raced this stage at the arcade, I was hooked on racing games (and Sega games) forever. In it's time it looked absolutely mindblowing...a track that started out six lanes wide (you were lucky to see racers with three lanes), the crowd at the start, the Ferrari, the traffic, the brilliant blue of the ocean to the left...and all this done to your choice of music.

daytona2k13.jpg

Seaside Street Galaxy - Daytona USA (arcade, Saturn, DC)

I think this course really showed me what was possible with real 3D and hot track design. It had it all...long straights, tight hairpins, sweeping turns, and some great visual touches like the space shuttle, Jeffery's statue, the birds and running horses, and the cool as hell Model 2 message on the wall just prior to the shuttle.

segaral2.jpg

Lakeside - Sega Rally Championship (arcade, Saturn)

A gorgeous looking course in the arcade version (didn't look half bad on the Saturn for the time either), and devilishly fun. Starts off with a ton of tight turns, throws you out into a long straight, then a series of medium turns, a long left sweeper next to the lake, before a couple of reverse S turns to finish off.

vortal_pic_4138.jpg

vortal_pic_22715.jpg

SS3 - Sega Rally 2 (arcade, DC, PC)

The Sega Rally 2 tournies that I were involved in probably made these courses in better in my mind then they really are, but the fact that I had so much fun competing on these courses despite pulling my hair out and restarting my races 87 times in a row shows that they were more then competent. Snowy SS3 was the arcade course, and a blast to race through...it's an extremely fast course and most of it can be taken flat out as long as you're on the right line and cut the apex. Desert SS3 is extremely tricky with a lot of wide space in parts that makes it difficult to find the line, and a host of devilish S turns that really test your ability to soft throttle and your nimbleness in steering the car. Mountain SS3 has a combination of tarmac, sand and mud, along with some tight turns of it's own that need to be taken just right in order to get through them without losing a lot of speed. Muddy SS3 was similiar...very fast for the most part if you take the lines right, but with some tricky slow turns in a few places including ultra tight hairpins. And Isle SS3 stitched three or four hairpins together in one part of the track that simply couldn't be tackled properly in a 4WD car without the e-brake. Oh yeah, Riveria was a cool take on the Monaco GP/Monte Carlo scene, and Super SS was an extremely intense last track (though not as cool overall as Lakeside).

cmr2pix04.jpg

cmr2pix05.jpg

Australia - Colin McRae 2 (PC)

This still remains one of my all time favourite games, and my two favourite races in the game are Australia and Greece. Greece had a lot of hairpins that required the e-brake, and a lot of drop offs at the side that added to the thrill and danger of real rally racing. You couldn't go too fast, or it'd eat you for lunch. Australia on the other hand was very fast, but the surface was looser making it easier to lose control if you weren't on the ball. It also had one stage with two great high jumps in a row, similiar to one of the stages in the WRC event.

le-mans-24-hours-pc-1.jpg

gt4delasarthelarge5.jpg

Circuit de la Sarthe - Le Mans (DC, PS2), Gran Turismo 4 (PS2)

Not a particularly difficult course (save for a series of mid-speed turns towards the end), but a fun course that's steeped in history and provides the opportunity to simply fly like a rocket.

I do have more to add, but I'll save 'em for later. I'll just add that my most wanted course for inclusion in a game is undoubtedly Mosport, a road course just east of here. It's reputed as being one of the best and toughest road courses on the planet, and I don't think it's shown up in any game outside of GP Legends.

My favorite track is Suzuka. I put so much money playing the 3screen F355 on that track. It also had everything you could want from a race track: Long straights, S turns, tight corner hairpins... GT4 did a good job but the image quality seems better in F355.

I tend to like real life courses because i'd like to think how i'd drive in them in real life, if i ever got the chance.

Seaside Street Galaxy - Daytona USA (arcade, Saturn, DC)

looking at that pic nearly brought a tear in my eyes.

Thats my most run track back in dreamcast days with split screen with my bros.

I can only think of one circuit that really feels special to me...

wipeout19.jpg

It's Odessa Keys in Wipeout 2097. I played it a crazy amount of times trying to beat my time records, such a lovely track. :)

Sweet lord the Nurburgring is a beast. I've heard things about it before, but now that I'm playing it in GT4, I can't stop trying to learn it so that I might fell the beast.

Rainbow Road rules because it is so frantic and the music kicks arse.

Bowser's Castle in Super Mario Kart weren't tracks that I looked forward to in any GP, but they were easily some of the ones I performed best in, beating the competition easily by 10-15 sec leads.

One of my favourites was the 4th (I think) track in R4. I'd have to check it properly, but it was the 1st track near the airport and throughout parts of the city highways. It still floors me with that neo blue/green hue glow.

Wow this is an awesome thread Shinobi. Good question man. It would take me ages to think of which tracks I've raced on in the past to single out the best, but I'll name a few at the top of my head:

1.A)Daytona USA 2....Amusement City
1.B)Super GT....Beginner Day stage
1.C)Rage Racer...the oval
2)Rage Racer...the intermediate track with the SF-style hills
3)RRV....The long city track
4)GT3....Tokyo
5)GT3....Seattle
6)RR Type 4....Shooting Hoops
7)OutRun...second stage to the left branch with the stone pillers

Super Mario karts:

-Super Mario Circuit 2
-Rainbow Road

GT series:

-Grinderwald
-Redrock Valley Speedway
-Citi Di Aria

Real tracks:

-Nurburgring long
-Laguna Seca
-Sarthe
-Road America
-Sandown
-Bathurst

gt4-nurburgring-screens-20040729050111905.jpg

Nurburgring is my absolute favorite. I spent countless hours on it in PGR2 trying to learn it as best I could. Made it into the top 50 times at one point, though I've fallen far from that now. Now it's one of the main places I play in GT4, trying to get quicker and quicker. My goal is to get faster than 6:00 in my stock pagani race car. I got about 15 seconds over in the considerably less powerful McLaren F1 on my first go(in the McLaren...that is), so I think I'll be able to make it.

cittadiaria1.jpg

I also am enamored with the winding streets of Citta di Aria in GT4. Those incredibly narrow downhill and uphill sections are so tense but so fast that it's absolutely exhilirating.

pgr2_supercars_race7.jpg

Edinburgh in PGR2. Felt more properly laid out for racing than most of the other cities in the game, plus it was just amazing to look at.

rsc2_041404_077.jpg

This course(well, set of courses, really) in RSC2. For the life of me I can't remember what it's called (and I seem to have misplaced my copy of RSC2, so I can't check). The general atmosphere is just great.

1080l8.jpg

Dragon Cave in 1080 Snowboarding. This is the only course in the game I can recal in memory almost the entire way through. The feel of boarding at night was pretty amazing at the time (although it probably hasn't aged well at all). I remember playing this course over and over just for the joy of playing it.

I guess that's pretty good for now. Maybe I'll add more later.

EDIT-
Really great thread idea, by the way.

no screenshots but here are a few of mine:

Suzuka in Japan
Monza in Italy (both have similarities)

Daytona 1 Expert course

Edinburgh in PGR2 - almost any configuration. Great combination of wide sweeping corners and tight, technical elements. Pretty much the only track I played online.

several different tracks set in Ridge City (particularly the R5/Ridge Racers versions) - hard to choose just a specific track here as each of them have their quirks, from the opening Park Town run to the classic Sunny Beach up to Outer Pass. So satisfying. Ridge Racer PSP has me back on my addiction.

Rave Racer city stage - Just an awesome track with some great sections. The industrial area especially rocks.

Daytona 2 city stage - Tons of variety here, but the tall building section was truly an awe inspiring moment the first time I ran through...and it continued to wow me each additional time that I drove through the course.

Suzuka Japan circuit (especially the MotoGP rendition) - Complex corners all around with a massive straightaway in the final quarter of the track (which is why the MotoGP version was my favorite to race)

Rage Racer intermediate city - Sorta reminded me of the old game "Cisco Heat" the first time I took those massive hills. It's a beautiful course and the Ridge Racers version is especially awesome to behold...

I'm sure there are more, but it's early and I can't remember them all. Plus, I have Ridge Racer PSP on the brain.

I'd say Midtown Expressway from Ridge Racers (which i believe is originally a Rave Racer course) and Aeropolis: Dragon Slope from F-Zero GX.

:lol You're such a clown Mat...

One track I wanted to mention in my first post but forgot about was the super track found in Daytona 2 Power Edition, which combined the amusement park, city and oval courses for a one lap flier. Defintely one of the coolest courses I've raced, and the courses are combined really well. OutRun 2 has the same sort of thing with the tracks, but they're connnected differently and I don't think it came off as well.

d2pe_a.jpg

Still need to drop another mega post later to unveil the rest of my favourite courses (think they're all real-life tracks), though some of them have already been covered.

1. Special Stage R11 - GT1
2. Greisswald - GT2
3. Choco Island - Super Mario Kart

4. Rave City Downtown - Ridge Racers
5. Above the City - RR5
6. Airport Track - R4
7. Green Factory - F-Zero GX/AX
8.

AWESOME thread Shinobi!

I'd like to post them...with clips of a lap...y'know, just to show how awesome they are and how bad of a driver I am. I'd give me a chance to relive some classics too...time to pull out Rage Racer and SEGA Rally! :)

I hope I got enough time...

Dolphin Cove - Need for Speed High Stakes
Route Adonf - Need for Speed High Stakes
Kindiak Park - Need for Speed High Stakes
Snowy Ridge - Need For Speed High Stakes

Alot of tracks from Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2, SSX 3 and Burnout 2.
Some Far East tracks in Burnout 3

SuperMarioKart-StarCup-KoopaBeach1.png

Koopa Beach 1 - Super Mario Kart

Suzuka - loads of racing games (Moto GP2 verison is prob my fav)

plat_4.gif

Port Town II - FZero

Twilight City - Waverace 64

Goodness, you're making me pine for my racing games back at home. Just a few more minutes of work darnit!

I'm going to power up the Xbox first and play some PGR and Rallisport then turn on the Dreamcast for some real racing: Sega Rally 2 and F355.

Mad props to both of you for those awesome choices.

Damn....I forgot all about Above the City in RRV and The Airport stage in R4.

-Port Town in F-Zero (original) - loved the jumps and the music
-Paris in Outrun 2
-Daytona USA level with the bridge and the best game music ever - "I wanna fryyyyy, sky high!"
-The first level of Beta in Wipeout Pure (forgot the name :P)
-Hong Kong in Cruisin Exotica

and of course, NYC in GT4 (I love seeing how NYC looks modeled in games)

Glad people are liking this thread...I figured it was long overdue.

Time for my second lengthy post, focusing on the specific tracks that I liked in F355 Challenge and Grand Prix Challenge.

B00004TJDI.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

F355 Challenge (DC, PS2, arcade)

course_lb.jpg

12.jpg

Long Beach - fun street road course that requires the usual precision car control through the twists and turns. Despite it being an expert course in the game, it's probably my easiest in the game.

course_fo.jpg

fiorano_con.JPG

Fiorano - This famed circuit deserves mention just for being Ferrari's official bitchin' test drive course. It's a pretty hard track to tackle...has some narrow turns that sneak up on you fast if you're not paying attention.

B00007GZLM.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Grand Prix Challenge (PS2)

australia.jpg

s21447_ps2_12.jpg

Albert Park, Melbourne - One of my favourite F1 circuits with a few fast sweeping turns, hard braking points, and a couple spots for clean overtakes.

sanmarino.jpg

_39426338_imola300.jpg

Imola, San Marino - Similiar circuit to Albert Park, the track where Aryton Senna's life was taken far too soon. A lot of fast sections with super hard braking required for the slow turns.

monaco.jpg

s21447_ps2_6.JPG

Monaco - The most famous F1 race in the world, with the most beautiful scenery. It's also by far the most boring race on the calender, since clean passing is simply impossible unless the guy ahead screws up large. But in terms of actually driving the course, it's a lot of fun...the tight confines and twisty turns make for a great test in driving control.

canada.jpg

02_Panis_1B.jpg

Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal - One of the best courses on the calender, featuring a fast but tricky series of turns on the first part of the track, and two long straights on the second.

belgium.jpg

s21447_ps2_30.JPG

eau-rouge-large.jpg

Spa-Francorchamps - Probably the most bad ass circuit on the F1 calender. Set in a beautiful forest area, it features the super tight La Source hairpin for turn one, which is then followed by a ridiculously steep downhill section of track that leads into the infamous Eau Rouge, an extremely quick S turn where the challenge is to take it full throttle, though it's very tough to do. Even in the real race many drivers lift through this section.

Later today I hope to make my third big post covering the tracks in TOCA Race Driver 2 and GT4.

great thread. :D

ah, f355 and Sega Rally 2! now those are some racing games i really enjoyed.

i couldnt find an image, but my favorite Sega Rally 2 course was the short Riviera stage.

i spent some serious hand cramping hours shaving fractions of a second off of my time to get a decent rank on the Sega Rally ranking page (back when it was alive). i made it up to 3rd or fourth place towards the very end of its lifecycle. i was ver pleased with my time and the effort it took to get me there.

i know Shinobi's name was all over those ranking pages, along with Player1, Kruza, a friend of mine JD, and a bunch of other names that im forgetting.

man, i love Sega Rally. where's 3 dammit?!

and there never will be another game like F355. it was too much for the public to handle (me included, but i loved it). :)

Hell yeah.

Dark10x - here is someone's Rave Racer review from '96 - I think you'll agree with most of it ^__^

Subject: RAVE RACER Arcade review

Seeing as noone has played it and I have, I thought I might as well let
everyone know about it (the game that is)

Well, the attract sequence has cut scenes of cars looking cool moving up
a road every now and then interrupted by shots of a twisting female's
body.

Blah!

After you put your money in ($HKD4) you get presented with 4 courses, a
new city course, the original Ridge Racer course and two others (that
escape me at the moment sorry).

The Rave Racer city course is THE most awesome course I have ever played
in a driving game
... (except maybe Daytona's Expert. Hey! I liked it!)
It's like driving through Tsuen Wan in HK, with all the factories,
overhead bridges, etc.
It starts off in the city streets (the foot paths
are blocked off by red and white barriers, but you can still see the
towering buildings). As you progress (yes, the awesome tunnels that Sega
Rally tried to replicate are still there), you get to drive under bridges
(it feels good, give realism), go through an industrial area (the BEST!)
and get to the start for another lap. Yes, the laps are longer, but I
can't remember everything in it =). There are banked curves, 3 jumps on
the first course
(which are pretty hard to recover from imho) and 12 cars
to race against. As far as I know they're just rehashed ones of the
original RR ones. (Which can't be a bad thing... if the yellow
solvalvouoawurow is there). There are now two commentators, a normal 3 2
1 GO guy and a girl who "encourages" you. Coolies. It's still lacking the
Sega-esque reactive steering wheel (which is a good thing for me for sure)

Gripes. Ok, well, The seat seemed a bit uncomfortable (I'm about 6') and
I was wearing 8up Docs so it was pretty hard to hit the miniscule pedals
(I'd guess this'd change for the western release). Oh, and in the intro,
I didn't like the girl. They should've replaced it with Nina or something =)

Graphics : 99.99999999% =)
Sound: 90% About as realistic as you can get.
Music: 80% Namco! Techno isn't for everyone!!!!
Playability: 95% If it's Ridge Racer...
Replayability: 95% with the addition of 3 courses, this'll keep
you pumping in the coins like hell.
Overall: 96%

After Biohazard, Tekken 2 and Soul Edge come out, this'll be the one
we'll be waiting for March for =)

*.NB Rave Racer has NOT been scheduled for a PSX release, although it's
pretty much certain (for the Nintendo 64 as well)

Just plugged my copy of F-Zero to the SFC to be amazed by the awesome track design there...Thanks to the guy that mentioned Port Town II.

Heh, those were some fun times...I remember one race Kruza and I had on Muddy SS3 where we swapped positions four or five times in the closing hours. He ended up nipping me by about three hundreths of a second. It was just incredible.

And yeah, Riveira was a lot of fun...

Extremely tight course, and ridiculously tight hairpins that required the use of the e-brake. I love the Monaco GP setting for the course, though it hardly represents the real Monte Carlo race (save for where the service area is).

awesome. thanks for the pics.

yes, that course walls balls to the wall, all speed vs. e-braking through tight ass turns.

man, i had so much fun on that course. there was so much to that game, that i only got good at maybe less than 1/2 the courses.

such a great game.

did you guys compete against eachothers ghosts regularly, or just do the runs blind? i remember someone had a page up with a bunch of saved ghost/replays for all of the tracks. i lost track of that page a while back though.

does Kruza still post anywhere? i havent seen him since Cafemans forum dissapeared.

hopefully we'll all catch back up again when SR3 comes out. ive been looking forward to that one for quite awhile now.

Not sure how others did it, but I did blind runs the entire time. Felt like a real rally race when done that way, since you couldn't be certain how your time matched up until the end, unless you were losing time against yourself.

As for Kruz, I haven't seen him post here in a while. Think he posted here during the summer, talking junk about the Pistons :lol, but that's the last time I remember seeing his posts. Don't see his posts on HG either, though admittedly I haven't been there in several months now (just now is the first time I've been there since last year). Hopefully he shows up again, which I'm sure he will.

Meanwhile I never did get to make my other big posts...I'll try and get one of 'em down later tonight.

1 - Manor Top: Wip3out in Phantom. Racing on top of buidings and having 4 90 degree turns at the start of the circuit and aat the last corner... this racing track is brutal on the Air Brakes. Classic Wipeout.

2 - Valparaiso: WipEout 2097. Extremely narrow, several acute short corners, bumpy as hell, big drop near the end, Killer S turns. I loved grinding the walls taking corners on this track. Getting the perfect lap was a great challenge on this track.

3 - Silverstream:Wipeout. One mistake and it was all over. Most difficult track in a wipeout game. i've never mastered this track and have placed first only a handfull of times.
The track is slippery, triple speed boasts in several sharp corners and just before 180 degree turns which required you to apply either of the air brakes well before reaching the turn, extremely satisfying when you managed to take those 180 degree turns at full speed without touching the walls.

A couple of my favorites that I haven't seen mentioned:

1. "Twilight City" from Wave Race 63 - Just a fantastically designed course. From the wall you have to submerge to get past to sloped beach you can use to do tricks off of, this is one of my favorite courses ever.

2. "Mount Mayhem" from Beetle Adventure Racing - It actually saddens me that this is the first mention of BAR in this thread. Either way, this is my favorite course in the game. I love all the jumps you can do inside the caves.

Otherwise, there are a bunch of tracks in RSC and RSC2 that I absolutely love. Sadly, I really can't remember any of the specific names.

cool, thanks for the reply Shinobi.

man, Waverace (as well as WR:BS) and RSC both had quite a few amazingly fun courses. too many to list, not that i remember the names.

I loved the Montecarlo tracks in Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed, the Silverstone track in Super Monaco GP on the Mega Drive, the japanese track in Colin McRae Rally 2.0 and I spent tons playing F1 Super Lap in the arcades.
