Your Lie in April (Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso) IOTI Life is Colorful

The lie being about Kaori liking Watari was obvious from the beginning, I don't see how anyone could be shocked by that other than Kousei himself.
The ending didn't really do much for me,
Kaori's death
was inevitable, but the letter was nice. I'm also not sure if there really are implications that
Kousei and Tsubaki will get together, and if there are it'll take a while after for them to actually get over Kaori's death properly.
Watari
got what was coming to him really, he's a nice guy but no-one should be trying to get it on with 2 or 3 girls at once.

Overall, the series was pretty good, it sort of ended up staggering over the finish line, but Kousei's performance in the last episode was great. The series reminded me why I like classical music, although I'm not sure if I'd want to go to a piano recital any time soon. Best part of the story was
Kousei telling his mum to die, and she did, it felt good.

8/10.

I swear, every time I saw this thread bumped in my subscription list after I got to work yesterday was like a needle to my heart.

I had an inevitable sense of what this episode would bring with it and only mustered up the strength to watch it just now.

Needless to say, this ending delivered everything I hoped for, imagined and then some. And I blubbered like a fool.

Judging from this thread I should scope out Anohana for more feels and tears, eh?

The ending didn't disappoint at least, but fuck I just want more. ;_;
Technically, we will get more with a special OVA episode in a couple months (this was announced a while back incidentally; comes out with the final manga volume). Looking forward to buying the BluRay when Aniplex decides to release it. Hopefully it gets a worthy localization... I imagine Bang Zoom! will be handling any dub.

your review is spot on, the anime really is a top-tier production, I'd be proud to show it to people who think anime is just Dragonball etc..

Thanks! I agree with that sentiment as well.

Yes, Anohana for sure. I'd say it's tough to tell if this will get a dub or not, Aniplex USA is notoriously hard to predict what they'll do with a series. If this get picked up Toonami that would certainly help. Sadly the Blu-Rays are probably going to cost like $59.99USD a set, with a total of like 4 or 5 sets if previous releases from them are an indication.

Also I highly recommend White Album 2 for everyone as well if you're looking for another musical romance story that will mess your heart up.

Good review. Only thing I didnt like about it is you recommending White Album 2 to any human being on this planet. Yuck.

Thanks! I stand by that recommendation though, White Album 2 was very good in my books. It didn't end the way I would have wanted
Setsuna is best girl
but I really enjoyed the journey regardless

Speaking of musical anime, hows Kids on the Slope?

I love this genre of anime but I just couldnt get into WA2 at all.
I liked the ending for WA2 because I hated all the characters and everyone essentially lost.
But thats a rant for another thread :P

Have you published any other reviews?

You know,
I really felt for Watari at the end, as he looked longingly at his phone. He got the shortest end of the stick because he obviously liked her, but he was such a goddamned BEST FRIEND he put aside all of that and pushed and supported Kousei the whole way - in a way that was different than what Tsubaki and Kaori brought to the table, but still absolutely necessary.

Bravo, Watari, bravo. You will always be Friend A+.

He truly is the best bro.
When I realized that he really did like her, it made me appreciate him even more than I already did. I dont think he will be able to forget her as easily as Kaori thinks. Its so sad :(

Watari's the bro of all bros.
But he's still young and happy to fool around during his youth without having any strings attached. It is a shame that he was taken for granted by literally everyone throughout but it's not like he's raised any objection over it.

Perhaps after getting slapped silly repeatedly and juggling fickle girls for a while he'll pry Nao away from her yaoi manga and they can date seriously. They're going to get dragged along on social outings by Kousei and Tsubaki regardless.

I've only watched about half of Kids on the Slope before getting distracted by Silver Spoon, but I know people speak very highly of it. Its definitely fits firmly into the josei genre, so the way it portrays certain events is different. It's hard to describe.

I typically do informal manga and light novel reviews on anitay.kinja.com (please disregard our news writer, that's not indicative of the content) and leave the actually formal review writing to a couple other writers, so this was definitely a more substantial and formal effort than I usually do. We do try and cover every major show airing with season though with a "formal" review, but this is the first show I've bothered to take on.

Regarding the OVA, I'm guessing it's not going to be a sequel that gives us a spinoff, but rather one of those untold stories that took place some time in between in events, i.e. some kind of outing to the beach or whatever.

Would love an alternate happy ending though.

Really good. You should definitely give it a shot.

I would be extremely shocked if it took place after the anime. The alternate end is what I need

Having an alternate ending would be stupid as it would clash with the themes presented throughout the show. It's not a visual novel. Reality sucks. We just have to accept it.

"Spring, the season I met you in, is coming. A Spring is coming... without you"

Today is the first day of spring in real life as well.
But I watched it yesterday :T

lol

But there's gonna be an ova? Kind of interested if it'll be a flash forward type deal.

I liked it, but it didn't hit me nearly as hard as Your Lie in April did. I think Sakamichi focuses way harder on love conflicts than this series, as part of its overall theme of
unrequited love
, which makes it a different kind of show than Shigatsu and its focus on a single pairing. Both use music in interesting ways, but I feelt YLIA's drama was a lot more touching than the romance-related issues KotS presented.

Ending was decent, but the teary moment for me was eps 14 or so with mom worrying about how kosei will be when shes gone ; _ ;

I'm in the same boat. Kousei's whole conflict with his mother and how it was handled and resolved hit me particularily hard, making the ending pale in comparison. I guess I can relate more with having parent issues than having the girl you're in love with
get progressively worse and end up dying
.

oh so i guess it ended like we all suspected it would
damn the animation and artstyle is a lot better than the manga... really feel like checking this out

edit: just read the manga ending... :(
didn't cry though

I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those outings they went out on off screen that entirely comedic to take the sting out of Kaori's death.

I really don't like the idea of an alternate ending. This is how it ended and it might not be what you wanted, but I don't think creators should go back and change something just to satisfy a group of people that didn't like it.

I would like to see some random side story and perhaps a bit that takes place after the show.

I enjoyed the ending a lot, I think it's perfect. Sometimes I want to dream a little bit though, so I wouldn't mind if they indulged me

There's nothing wrong with alternate endings if the true ending is established.

I just got into anime last summer. This is the first show that destroyed me. I woke up this morning still feeling devastated with no motivation to watch anything else. lol

everyone remembers their first anime that made them rethink the medium.

For me when I first watched FMA: Brotherhood I was like GG it doesn't get better than this.

And it didn't. But there is lots of great stuff like this around.

Posting reply from Page 1 LOL. God I wanna hop in on the discussion so badly but still have yet to complete it. I remarathoned Eps 11-21 last night. 21 was a new one for me since I held off (if I'd watched 21, I'd only have 22 to look forward to, was my thought process). I was wondering whether this series would lose some of its power if I'd known ahead what was coming but... I honestly found myself just as engrossed as I had the first time through.

Some key moments lost some of their initial emotional punch, but for the most part, I was still hanging on every scene. Damn man, you know that lump in your throat you get when something's straight up emotionally wrecking you, you're trying not to give in? I was dealing with that for like 4 sustained hours LOL. In 21
When Kaori finally breaks down and confesses her desires and especially fear to Kousei, man... that was rough
I've been thinking about it all day

I'll be rewatching 20, 21 and then 22 later tonight, and then recommending this to like... everyone haha.

I always thought the end pair would be
Tsubaki x Watari and Kousei x Kaori
when the show first started. Childhood friend groups usually have that dynamic.

I dont think anythings gonna pry Tsubakis friend away from her BL haha.

Gotcha. Others have suggested checking it out as well so I think I'll do that.

Just recently finished Angel Beats! Man between this, Shirobako and AB! I've been on quite the emotional rollercoaster this week haha.

Silver Spoon for the healing and the Goose house

Thats a solid choice as well. I'd also recommend Tari Tari as a lighthearted musical/singing series and Barakamon for just healing, period.

Except for that one episode. That'll destroy you too.

Which episode was that?

Just finished.

I'll likely be ready to join you guys later tonight once I marathon the remaining eps. Wanna go in with a sense of continuity to it all since it'd been a few days since I'd seen Ep 20. When I hit that ep where Kaori says
I won't always be around to help you know, you know.
I felt like the show was gonna conclude with

Kaori dying during the operation (cause like c'mon, maximum shock value and all), and while Kousei and friends are devastated, Kousei musters the strength to deliver that last promised performance as a eulogy to this girl who changed his world. She's still with him in spirit. Montage of flashback clips play as poignant monologue rolls on. The three childhood friends become closer through their shared experiences with Kaori. Feels will be had, etc.

We'll see how it goes though.

Looks my prediction was completely on the money,
but it really didn't make it any less devastating.
I think one of my favorite things about this show is how unique the characters' internal thoughts are. During the moments of introspection, Tsubaki and Kaori aren't as poetically inclined as Kousei, but their words are their own are no less powerful for it.

I absolutely loved Kaori's final send off to Kousei, it was beautifully handled. (I especially loved the quick cut of tear drops falling on the letter when he reaches those three all important words) Amazing show thru and thru. I'm excited that an OVA may bring prospects of new adventures, (maybe one centered on Kaori as a prequel, or the gang during the anniversary of her death?) but I'm perfectly fine with how things ended, which is incredibly rare for me with anime.
