Now we already have a thread that's dedicated to voting for your top albums of 2013, but I always find it interesting to see what people have been listening to the most, as music is timeless. I always indulge in whatever has just come out, but I spend a good deal of time listening to older things as well that haven't come out this year. Since some people were complaining they hadn't listened to a lot of new music this year
, I thought I'd make this thread to see what everyone has been listening to the most this year.
If you could please post pictures with what you've been listening to, as well the actual title of the album, that would be awesome. Don't be that guy who posts your random obscure mid-90's electro-funk album that no one has ever heard of with no titles on the cover.
Chromatics - Kill for Love - I doubt I have ever had an album grown on me as much as this one has. I fell in love with it when it was released last year, but stopped listening to it and Lotus Plaza's Spooky Action at a Distance overtook it for my album of the year last year. Oh how I was wrong. This has easily become one of my favorite albums ever in the past year. As a person who found Night Drive to be kind of boring in the second half, filling it mostly with instrumental tracks, Kill for Love has a perfect balance. It never falters, and keeps my attention for the full 77 minute run time. It also helps that "At Your Door" may just be one of the greatest songs ever.
Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest - I had listened to Boards of Canada before, but I never really payed much attention to them as their last album hadn't come out since 2005. When "Reach for the Dead" came out, I was hooked. I found myself listening to it on repeat, and none of that changed once the album itself came out.
Arcade Fire - Reflektor - Love it or hate it, I think this might be the best record Arcade Fire have made.
I have always loved Arcade Fire, but haven't been as completely enthralled with them since Funeral came out. This album has taken them to a whole new different level for me. With James Murphy's very evident guiding hand, they've made something I will be coming back to for a long time.
Darkside - Psychic - Never has an album completely grabbed my subconscious like this one has. I was obsessed with it for close to a month, as it never left the CD player in my car or changed on my iPod. I lived and breathed this record for 3 weeks straight, until it got to a point where I just had to stop. My feelings of jealousy and self-loathing that I had been feeling about some relationships in my life at the time had completely attached itself to this album, forcing me to give it up to get my head straight. Yeah, this album is good.
The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow - I had always been a fan of The Smiths, but never really knew anything about this collection until after they did a full re-release of their catalog earlier this year. This might just be The Smiths best album, if you can even call it that. Like New Order with Substance 1987, this is an absolute must own.
Deerhunter - Microcastle / Weird Era Cont. - I absolutely loved Halcyon Digest when it came out in 2010, but never ended up listening to anything else from Deerhunter. I found the jump from Halcyon Digest to their other albums to be completely jarring. On Halcyon Digest, they just feel so constrained, where on their other albums they've broken out and gone in so many different directions. For whatever reason, they finally clicked with me this year, and I was switching back and forth between all of their albums for about a month straight.
Atlas Sound - Parallax - What a coincidence! I actually completely wrote this album off last year. I had bought it after all the praise it had gotten and just didn't get it. I ended up taking a bunch of CD's that I didn't like to a record store and sold them, and the next day I decided to give it another shot. After a few listens, I was hooked and quickly drove back to the store to buy my copy back. Sadly, they had already sold it and I had to buy another new copy. As dumb as it was, it didn't bother me too much as it was money well spent.
BADBADNOTGOOD - BBNG - I had listened to these guys a few times in the last few years, but never found it to be more than a couple of songs at a time. I got into a jazz kick for a little bit this year and decided to sit down and actually listen to their albums, and I ended up finding them much deeper than before. Where someone like The Bad Plus just seems to cover popular songs, BBNG actually breathes new life into their tracks. If you ever wanted to get into jazz, but are a little hesitant, this isn't a bad place to start, and both of their albums are free.
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures / Closer - I remember reading a quote somewhere about how you need to be in a certain place in your life before you finally start to appreciate Joy Division. I had discovered Joy Division towards the end of high school, and while I enjoyed some of their songs, I didn't get the appeal. I guess I just hadn't been beaten down enough by life to become as dejected as I would towards the end of my college years. Needless to say, Joy Division isn't your go to record to put on when your friends come over. Over these past two years, Unknown Pleasures and Closer have become two of my favorite albums ever.
