The Animatrix (Japanese: アニマトリックス, Hepburn: Animatorikkusu) is a 2003 adult animated science fiction anthology film produced by the Wachowskis.

The anime compiles nine animated short films, detailing the backstory of The Matrix film series, in addition to providing side stories that expand the universe and tie into the film series.

This anthology film features great stories and unique styles. I've always loved anthologies because they offer so many interesting stories and symbolism.

The Matrix and Animatrix are the best in this franchise. For me, the best stories are...

The worst story for me is that of the athlete.

Haven't watched it in about 25 years but there was one that I found particularly moving. The one about an unsuccessful mission where they get taken down by the drones in the real world and at the end you just see their avatars dropping… heavy.

It was wild, all-over-the-place masterpiece. I was way too young to get it when it first came out, but looking back, it totally makes sense why I was confused.

They basically brought in all these artists and just let them do whatever they wanted with no rules. I think that's the whole reason it worked so well, just pure creative freedom.

I remember grabbing the DVD back in the day, but I'm kinda tempted to double-dip for the Blu-ray.

Everyone's favorite is probably The Second Renaissance, right? It's definitely up there for me. But my secret favorite is the skateboarding one. That hand-drawn, fade-away art style is something I'd never seen before and I love it.

Haven't watched them in over 20 years. But I remember they were very good. Probably the last time anything with the Matrix brand that was actually good.

I liked it more than any Matrix movie.

Favorite short was the messed up glitch one that the kids were messing about in.
The music there was particularly memorable.
simple, subtle, but cool.

Watched them when I was like 13 and was mesmerised, watched it again a few years ago and it hold up VERY well and was better than I remember. A lot of the best talent in the industry at the time were on it.

The Flight of Osiris is one of the best. I think it was done in the style of Final Fantasy: Spirit Within.
Not just "done in the style of" it was produced by Square Pictures, the studio that sprang up to make The Spirits Within.

Might have jerked off at the first fight with the almost naked asian chick. I was 15-16ish I think. Good memories. Aside from that, I dont remember much else. Never seen it again.

Like all anthologies the quality is a bit uneven but The Second Renaissance is a beautiful and terrifying masterpiece which is a warning to all humans who are racing to develop AI today

Second Renaissance is of course in a class of itself and I would love to see a movie made in that era. But World Record is also insanely good. I don't care about the Matrix sequels and don't think of them as canon, but Animatrix is well worth watching.

Love it. It was (well... Is) a great addition to the universe.

Yeah, when i was younger i didn't like some shorts beacuse of how they looked, but now i find them a lot better. The stories were very good.
This collab kinda reminds me of Star Wars Visions - same idea, similar execution.

The Animatrix is supposed to be files in Zion. The second renaissance is quite clear what happened in the past. Yet the humans in the matrix movies don't seem to know what really happen. I guess it was just retconned at that point. Just a small pet peeve for me.

Beyond is one of the best animated shorts I've ever seen.

The rest is a mixed bag, but its overall a very good anthology.

Is there a blu-ray for it? I can only find the dvd.

The Renaissance episodes are excellent, disturbing, and profound.

But of the side stories I like World Record the best the lore of how someone being able to break out of the Matrix by sheer will adds just another layer of depth to the universe. My next favorite side story was the one made by the Aeon Flux creator, Matriculated, I couldn't find it on YT but managed to find it on vimeo. The other side stories are more so eye candy but these two are the most memorable.

My opinion is that I was a big The Matrix fan as a kid and didn't know what to make of the Animatrix. The idea of mature cartoons was foreign and weird to me at that time.

I'll get around to watching Animatrix some day.

Found them kind of boring back in the day, can't say I remember anything about them, so they probably weren't total shit like the Matrix sequels. Zero interest in the franchise at this point.
