Ys Community Thread | "Do you know the name Adol Christin?"

At least things seem to be happening now that I got to the second village and got a full party. I feel mixed on the whole party thing, I mean its certainly a lot of fun and fast paced having a group of characters fighting groups of monsters and multi for boss battles... At the same time things get kind of cluster fucky like the battle against the possessed villagers in the cave.

So I think I'm at the half way point in Memories in Celceta, just completed the Tower of Providence and felt like sharing my updated thoughts on Ys Memories in Celceta.

After not being the biggest fan of the excess dialogue in Ys Origin, I was very nervous going into MoC when I knew we'd have an entire party of characters journeying with Adol though I've found myself enjoying that element of the game. I find the characters to all be pretty well written and developed and I'm able to connect better with them then I was the cast of Origin. The longer story sequences feel important and help to raise the stakes and make me want to continue exploring and playing.

I can't say I'm the biggest fan of having a party though, it does make battling random monsters in the wild more exciting, but I feel like the bosses have suffered and are no where near as challenging as bosses from previous Ys games. It's not to say they aren't fun to fight but in the past Ys games the bosses were the highlights and in this game they feel more like annoying road blocks that interrupt the exploration and story. The combat itself is fun though I would have preferred a jump button over a guard AND dodge button. No need to add in platforming (though I did enjoy it in Oath/Origin) but it would be useful for air combos which the game really should call juggle combos <_< .

The music is typical great Falcom stuff, and graphics are nice but the frame rate stutters in towns and sometimes when the action gets a bit frantic which sucks me out of the game a bit, especially after playing though Oath/Origin in solid 60fps the whole way. It's not a massive deal breaker but it can make getting the timing for flash guard/dodge more frustrating then it should be.

I'm still going to work towards finishing this game, but it's probably my least favorite of the Ys games thus far including even the classic bump ys 1&2. The story is shaping up to possibly be the best in the series though which I will give it massive credit for.

Yeah, in retrospect, I can't think of a single memorable Celceta boss. Felghana and Origin had a host of them but the bosses in Celceta felt like an afterthought.

I need to go back and finish Celceta sometime (I'm just a bit after meeting
Eldeel
and learning
that was the one who erased Adol's memories and that he has a dark side
). However, I was thinking of getting a PS TV sometime and would love to finish it on there, instead.

Did we ever get the PS TV patch? I know that Japan got a Vita TV patch, but I seem to recall there being some issues with XSEED being able to implement / release it here.

We never got the patch. Tom has said (over and over on their forums) that it's basically up to Falcom to do the patch for the western release.

Boo! Lame Falcom, boo!
Does the Asian ver. have that patch? If so the Asian ver. has Eng. subtitles right?

Man played a lot of Ys the past two-three weeks. Replayed through Ys 1 & 2 and Felghana. Finally played Origins and Ark of Napishtim. So fun. But my terrible luck with the ending movies continues.

On Ys 1 & 2 and Felghana the ending movie got skipped, went straight to the End image. On Ark game flat out crashed during the ending credits. The only one that went smoothly was Origins heh.

I'm getting towards the end of Memories in Celceta, had a quick question about the end game. Will Adol be forced at any point in the finale or could basically stop using him once I get a party of 4 outside of his memory stuff? I plan to use Adol in the finale anyways (Along with probably Karla and Celilica) but I just wanted to know.

As far as I know, you can use whoever you want.

Adol does have a mandatory segment at the end.

So having finished Brandish recently, anyone else notice that Adol and Ares both share a similar outfit.
This is Ares in the Brandish remake

This is Ys Seven Adol and as he appears in OiF

Armor+scarf, nice combo but how did it end up that way?

Armor + scarf seems like something that could be independently designed.

If he also had red hair (the iconic feature of Adol) you might have a point.

I know this isn't the thread for it, but I'd instantly drop cash on a Brandish 2 remake for PS4+Vita even if the graphics are simple.

And with that I've finally finished Ys 4 Memories in Celceta, while it's my least favorite Ys game so far it's still a very good game that I enjoyed playing. It had by far the best overall Ys story (Origin's Claw story line is a bit better, but it's held back by being tied to the mediocre Yunica and Hugo stories) and more of that great Falcom music which really sucked me in. I'm very curious now to try Ys 4 Mask of the Sun and Ys 4 Dawn of Ys to see how drastically different the stories are in those two games. One major change I've read is that
Gruda is not the final boss in either game, instead he's the second to last boss
.

Last year, I was able to play some Ys Seven for the first time, and this prompted me to purchase a Vita for the ability to play through the PSP Ys games.

I played through Oath of Felghana on Hard, and thoroughly enjoyed it. That simple yet effective storyline. Those quirky, lovable characters. That epic gameplay with those boss battles - I had to repeat some over and over again, but man, did I feel like I was improving all the while.

But best of all, THAT FALCOM MUSIC!

Since then, I've started Ys I + II, and Origin. Origin plays so similarly to Oath, which has one of my favourite styles of gameplay.

This series rocks :D

So I just finished Ys 5 on the SNES, man does this game have issues out the wazoo. Bosses can frequently be beaten by just mashing the attack button without even attempting to dodge their attacks, and often that's a better approach then trying to learn the bosses attack patters as you can't jump over enemy attacks for some reason and the hit detection is very weird on some attacks and bosses. The magic system is also completely broken and it boggles my mind that anyone thought it was a good idea. When it takes like 10 seconds to charge up a spell to cast, then another 5 seconds of animation before the spell happens, and enemies keep wandering around during all this meaning 90% of the time they'll just walk off screen or out of range. It's like they deliberately tried to make magic completely useless. At least the story was decent and kept me engaged the whole way though.

I'll save my full thoughts for when I finish Ys 6 and 7 and do my LTTP: Ys Series thread sometime later this year. Taking a break from Ys until 6 is on Steam.

i'M PLAying Ys 1 on my Vita.
I'm lvl. 5 and just beat the first boss who was very underwhelming....
Ys 1 so far has great soundtrack, gameplay's OK but the overall game right now is....'eh'.
Hopefully Ys 2 picks it up, which I understand it will.

Bosses are the worst part of Ys I in my opinion. And you can only get to level 10 in that game anyway, so level 5 for the first boss is kind of high for that point.

But yeah, Ys II is a much better game in every regard, and one of my favorites in the series.

You'll miss those halcyon days of underwhelming bosses when you're at the end screaming at your vita.

Ah yes I've heard of how Suicide enducing Dark Fact is.
I am rather...looking forward to facing him.

Hmm I think I'm playing with Chronicles OST? I'll switch to Complete and see if I likeit, but so far the OST I'm using is kickass.
Based Falcom and JDK <3

Vastly prefer Chronicles versions myself

I grew tired of Chronicles. In fact, I really dislike how Chronicles ignored a lot of the cool extra sections added to Ys I Complete. I'd probably like it a lot more if it had those, and even so, live instruments do not "replace" synth. Ever.

I once wanted to make an Ys fanmade sequel to Origin, where I'd explain Adol's "real" origin, as well as what happened to Hugo after the events in Origin. Because I was rather unhappy with how incomplete and silly the character development for Hugo's arc was. This little pixel logo was among the first concept arts. Sadly life no longer allows me the time for it anymore.

Was gonna name it Ys Zero - as it was literally the (fan)sequel to Origin and prequel to Ys I&II. Man I was already happy with just that cool name alone.

Just beat him after one or two tries, while the concept is nice, it was an overall lame and irritating boss fight.
One the hand it felt like role reversal; up til then you can charge at anything and it'd die ins econds :p

edit2: Ugh needed to speak with Feena first so she appears with Jeba next time I talk to her =_=

Well I just reached Dark Fact.
Can I still kill him if I equip the non-Silver armors?

I don't think so. Or at least, it'd be tedious as hell and very unlikely you'd survive for long. You *need* to equip the silver equipment to stand a chance.

Silver Gear it is then.
I'll equip the slowing ring too, i guess the idea is just to avoid the falling meteors and if I see DF coming at me I move away?

Found a Youtuber who is playing the OG PC-9X Ys games
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYFB4lW_m-A

Give it a watch to see how the game originally looked like ;D

BTW the Music in Darm Tower have all been great.

So Ninty opened a poll where you can vote for adding a new chacter to Smash Bros 4. I voted for Adol cuz I don't want this world to end without Adol vs. Link happening.

Uuuurgh this Dark Fucker...make these meteors fall faster why don't you...
OK so he moves in an infinity symbol I just need to position myself in the right squares and chase him.

Are there any good speedruns for Ys 1 or any Ys games?

Dark Fact has left the building! AND DON'T FUCKING COME BACK.
Onwards to Ys 2! How obtuse is it compared to Ys 1?

Ys 2 is a much more refined and funner game. But the game is also much easier (even on Nightmare) too due to being able to fireball spam and the easiest final boss ever.

For some reason I'm not feeling Ys 2 that much....music is good, and overall combat is OK.

I agree, despite all the improvements like being able to use magic, enemies being able to counter you during a bump rush, a more complex story, better and more varied towns, better and more varied dungeons, etc something about Ys 2 didn't click with me the same way Ys 1 did.

I think my biggest issue with Ys 2 is the fireball magic spell and how it makes fighting regular enemies a complete joke because even if they have their counter ability it's useless if they never get close to you, and all the bosses minus like 2 HAVE to be fought with the fire ball spell. When my JRPG action adventure boss fights feel more like shmup battles then jrpg action battles something has gone horribly wrong.

Right now my ranking of the Ys games are
1- 3 (OiF)
2- 7
3- Ys 1=Ys 2

Maybe I should start Ys Origin soon....
