Ys (II) Eternal added most of the NPC dialogue + notebook entries which carried over to Chronicles, and the original games definitely had a lot less story to them. But it's a strong premise which stood out back then and feels fresh now.The story and lore are great, probably the best out of all of its JRPG rivals at the time (assuming the story was this detailed in the original versions).
The dungeons can get pretty tiring with their multiple paths. Ys I is fine, but literally every area in Ys II outside of the towns is a huge labyrinth. It's annoying when you reach a dead end in a dungeon and have to backtrack to another part of the dungeon or a town to get an item you need to progress, and then you have to remember how to get back to the spot you were at. I hope that this design is just a holdover from the 80s and later games improve on level design.
