Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim PC |OT| - Re-Release of the Far West Ocean

So yeah the optional win against
_______Gies_______
is actually much easier then I thought especially compared to the optional win fights in Origin. The boss has 2 attacks and you can basically just kite him until he does the spin one, whack him a few times, then back away and repeat.

Really? That was optional? I dunked that fool so hard.

Here's a video showing off the extended combo of the Livart. You need to upgrade it to level 4, and then you can do this if you time your attacks well. I wrote a description of how to time it kinda in the video description... but it's hard to explain. The most important part is the pause after the first four attacks.

Yeah the timing is weird and I'd be lucky if I can make it to 3, never mind getting it consistently. Sometime I manage 4 without even trying, though... usually when the enemies are already dead.

So...

NightWolve actually released a patch to the Japanese version today in spite of XSEED games. He's still angry at Deuce because he gave the script to XSEED.

The amount of salt is pretty damn staggering.

That's neat! I didn't know you could do something like that. I'll hop on to upgrading it right away.

what the fuck am I reading

Consider it a free alternative (if you will) to their played-out pay-to-play "Steam Schemes" - the product of nothing more than a cynical desire to continue to profit off of poor devoted Ys fans with a ~12+ year old game this time... Why give your hard-earned money to criminal cheats for what can be had at a comparable value for FREE ??

Not sure I want to read that. What did he release though, hasn't it been fan translated for years?

The patch never got out because Deuce and Nightwolve stopped with the nearly final patch (probably even fully final). This was because Falcom sued some Korean fan translation group and they guys decided to shelf the project indefinitely.

Then all the hijinx happened with the Felghana/Origin stuff that killed Deuce's and Nightwolve's personal terms.

what the fuck am I reading

The ramblings of a dude who took the whole translation stuff waaaaayy too personally.

He's also calling them X.X.XSEED games.
He seems a bit insane

Pay-to-play scheme unlike the Japanese version which is free...oh wait. I suppose that one is too far gone to realize that people are supposed to pay for the games they are patching.

C'mon, don't call him insane. He was just very, VERY personally attached in all the tools he created. He took the Deuce scenario and the Felghana patch leak so personally that he still hasn't gotten over them.

The only bad thing he did is that he released the Ys VI patch just in spite to XSEED's release. In the end, he's only hurting Falcom, XSEED and himself with that stupid stunt.

I don't know that he is really doing any meaningful damage. If someone wants to pirate this game, the official release is probably already out there, I'm not sure why anyone would use his patch.

I don't know the guy or the history, but from his post and the included picture that's the only thing I can think of. And after all that he's begging for donations (with 4 PayPal buttons) in his installer. Like, seriously?

Anyone could've pirated the game in Japanese all the way from 2003 (or was it 2004, can't remember anymore), but now they can pirate and patch it in English. Of course you can probably pirate the Steam version etc. but that's another topic to discuss.

He has his own (a bit questionable tbh) ways of making his name, but he's a nice guy. He just soured after the 2012 scenarios.

I dived down the NightWolve hole about a year back and...it's definitely an interesting abyss to crawl through if you're a fan of internet drama. I frankly feel for the guy on some of the things he's said and emphathize with his issues with how things with Oath went down. But he does NOTHING well to sell himself, especially as time has gone by and the fanbase has shifted. Most current fans no nothing about this stuff, even if it's the sort of thing that older fans probably still remember with fond(?) memories. It's shame because from what I've seen he was/is one of the most important people in the western Falcom fanbase of yesteryear.

The Wind element is a teeny bit tricky, but it's pretty satisfying to successfully extend your combos with it. I only just got it so I'm not sure how I like it compared to the Whirlwind skills in Oath and Origin.

I didn't see the evening go last night. I got up to level 35 on normal catastrophe, all my 3 swords are lvl 8, got the bell of silence off that annoying side-boss and the armor in the limecave (equipped it with the serpent accessory) and was working my way through the cave before going to bed.

Am I the only one that skipped directly to the gear that cost in the thousands at the shop in the main town? I sold a few of those cure status items and had enough to buy pretty much everything she had to sell the first time I went in the shop.

He was. Be basically created the tools and dumped the scripts for all the Ys PC games. I loved working with his tools.

Started playing the game today, the start feels a lot slower than Oath or Origins, lots of backtracking going on. Just got done with the first Calamity though so hopefully the game will open up some more from here on forward.

Pacing is a problem in Ys6. No dashing and lots of backtracking - it hasn't aged as well as Felghana.

The backtracking was pretty evident for me too. Go to the bridge, go back to town, go to the shrine, then the beach, and then the shrine AGAIN...

On the otherhand, when it comes to setting I'm really liking the Canaan Islands that this game takes place in a lot more than Felghana. And this is after only having just reached the Port town. I'm pretty excited to see more of this region.

So why exactly did people call this one easy? Was it just the ability to use/hold healing items for whenever? Because even on hard (catastrophe) I'm having more trouble with even regular trash mobs than I was in Oath/Origin on Nightmare lol. There's also the problem of going into a new area and not knowing if I can handle it without first hitting something and seeing that 1 dmg hit, which I have about half a second to gtfo before being one shot by something.

Bosses also seem to be on a different level when compared to the other Ys games. The 2nd wasn't all that bad and I ended up beating him on my 2nd try, the 1st however... I died like 15 times on because I couldn't get his fire down. There doesn't seem to be any room for error on these things, when screwing up even once leads to losing half your health.

One thing that I've found helps a lot with trash mobs in this game is the downthrust move. It's always been useful in the Napishtim-engine Ys games, but it's especially useful and downright necessary in Napishtim itself. A lot of enemies are pretty much untouchable without it, and almost every enemy is like 100x easier with it.

Yep. Healing items basically take any sense of tension out of the game because you can afford to screw up over and over and still pull through. Take them out, though, and it's potentially the hardest game in the series on nightmare. I've beaten Origin on nightmare with all three characters and a few bosses in this still gave me a run for my money, even on normal (mostly boss 4, ugh).

Which one is boss 4?

Orjugan. Name's not a spoiler really, but it can't hurt.

That one was hard enough for me on Normal. I can't even imagine anything higher. I think that actually might be one of my least favorite bosses in the whole series. I would always get hit no matter how hard I tried to avoid.

It's actually pretty awesome to see my work laptop (i5 and Intel HD4000) to crunch through the game at 200fps on 1920x1080.

I remember I had to run the game in 800x600 to get perfect 60fps on an Athlon Thunderbird 1,4ghz and Nvidia 4800ti back in 2004!

Question: I'm in the ruins after you get the fire sword and there's some optional jumps towards single pillars that seem almost possible but the jumping is so inaccurate I can't tell if I should keep trying them or move forward. Do we get anything that makes these jumps easier?

You can use the dash jump. Tilt the stick/tap the dpad in the direction you want to go, release, then press jump and attack at the same time.

Wow...they didn't tell me I could do this and I missed it did I? Thanks though.

It's mentioned in the tutorial screens, but unlike later Falcom titles, the tutorial screens never actually pop up and interrupt gameplay in Ys VI -- you have to seek them out yourself in the menu.

Apparently Ys VIII is coming to PSP Vita and PS4? Any Chance Xseed will be doing the PS4 and PSP Vita Ports for the NA?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwW93YUrKiA

It has gameplay videos and looks like a barren Monster Hunter. I don't know if this is real or not, but it looks real. Also maybe doing the port for the PC with the help of Falcom.

It's only coming to PS Vita and PS4. Don't expect a PC version unless you can play the Chinese versions.

XSEED will likely localize them, but as of now it is too soon to expect one. Wait for it to be released in Japan first.

It's real, but it's still a while off. That's from last September, while the game won't even be out this September (seemed like it would, but Tokyo Xanadu's that month now, so...)

This kind of slowpoking is in another level!

Joking aside, the game is coming to Vita/PS4 and not PC, No one from Xseed is going to say shit until it's official but you can probably expect both versions to come out next year in the west(game isn't even out in Japan yet).

How the fuck are you supposed to dodge the fire attack of the first boss? I started on hard catastrophy mode and that move nearly one shots me and I can't avoid it no mather what I try...

Edit: Never mind, first try after this post I took him down because he only did the fire attack once. Dodging the claws was easy enough. It still took a pretty long time to take him down, was level 6 too low for him? The enemies barely gave me any exp anymore.

Be far away when he starts it. (Get one hit in and then run back immediately.) Stand all the way in the lower left or lower right corner; move up if he does the straight line fire, stay put if he does the sweeping one.

Go to a spacious location, preferably south-east of the map. As soon as his head leans forward or it begins to breath flames, run towards the west portion of the map, that's how you'll evade the standard one.

I'd forgotten how much of a pain enemy critical hits in this were. Always occur with the worst possible timing as well.

This isn't really on the topic of the PC version, but would you guys either get this on PSP or PS2? Which one is better? PC isn't really an option for me.

Go for the PS2 version. It has more features and better framerate. The PSP one has pretty bad load times.
