Yuji Naka EDGE interview

Main statements:

-It is disappointing not having an own (Sega) console. But then again it gave him the possibility to work with other companies and to use a lot of different hardware. So he feels happy after all.

-Xbox is not successful in Japan, but it is successful in Europe, America and Australia. That is why they will continue to support Xbox.

-Sonic Team will concentrate their development on PS2

-They still have a great partnership with Nintendo

-Sonic was actually supposed to be one of the characters in SSBM, but there was not enough time to integrate him. But there is still the possibilty to make a similar collaboration in the future. Maybe we will see Sonic and Mario working (or fighting) together soon (hint?)

Someone please make this happen. I've been wanting this since the fucking Genesis/SNES days.

I can't speak for the legitimacy of the quotes, but there isn't a Yuji Naka interview in Edge.
Yes there is, there are different versions of Edge, i've seen this in the Australian one.

Except for the PSO port, what "big" game did Sonic Team do for Xbox ?
Sonic Heroes used Renderware and they managed to make the Xbox version worse looking than the gamecube (reference) one...
"continue to support Xbox", let me laugh.

I think he speaks for Sega as a company.

That doesn't make sense. All their software sales and profit have been from the GC.

Sure it does

Everything else seems pretty much about Sonic Team. Anyway, as long as the ex-Smilebit people still work on Xbox/Xbox 2 games, I'm happy.

That's impossible. There is only 1 EDGE magazine and that comes out of the UK.
You're wrong, recently a new Australian version has come out. The front cover has an outline of the continent of Australia on it made up of screenshots from games. The interview also talks about why Yuji Naka is in Australia. It's a great magazine.

I'd even post scans but they aren't allowed.

The hell? Are there even any Sega games coming out for the GC in the next year? I'm disappointed in Sonic Team, considering how well the Sonic games have done on GC. Nintendo should have gone for a exclusivity deal with Sonic games similar to what they did with Resident Evil, except this time a deal that would last.

I just don't understand.
I want somebody (FISHIE) to ask him directly why the GameCube support is lacking when it's generating so much in the way of sales for them.

Here's the real interview.

EDGE: Why has Sonic Team been a total fucking failure since the end of the Dreamcast?
NAKA: :(

Make it happen! Like everyone else I think that'd be so damn cool, as long as it wasn't just Sonic by his lonesome thrown in to a Nintendo populated game, and there were a plethora of both Nintendo and Sega characters. Oh, that would be sweet.

If Sega don't want to put their characters in Nintendo's control, I'm sure Nintendo would let Sega borrow theirs if Mario's current cameos are anything to go by.

I thought only scans of US mags were forbidden here? Someone who knows better can probably answer that. If so, and if this is from the Aussie mag, well... ;)

If you look at Sega's gamecube line-up then...

That sounded to me like empty PR. In fact, the first unveiling of developement of the infamous Virtua Figher RPG (Virtua Quest) seemed half assed, hell they showed a crappy ink jet print out with a paragraph on it. Almost looked like the guy looked over and said "I just said we have a great relationship but we have no games for them, quick, type something out, copy and past a picture and give it a tittle; Don't forget my latte!".

Really, I don't see anything worthy coming from Sega to the gamecube anymore.

you make it seem like it was hyped as super huge nintendo excluseive that turned out to be nothing more than a mediocre ps2/gc game that turned out to be bad anyway.
i wouldnt use that game as an example, becuase its not good on any platform. speaking of, what has sega even released recently that has gotten good reviews overall?

I would really prefer if the Sega and Nintendo worlds stayed seperately for Melee. I wouldnt mind seeing a collaboration though...

Phantasy Star Universe for Xbox 2?

It'd be cool if Nintendo went to Sega, Namco, Square-Enix, Konami, and Capcom and all got characters from all those companies and put them into Smash Brothers as bonus "teams" (ie: Team Sega, Team Namco, etc.).

I'll have to disagree with you on the 'great magazine' bit. The articles are still top notch, but the reviews which aren't recycled from the UK magazine are bloody awful. They lost the spirit of Edge when they gave out three 10's in the one issue. I mean, most of the guys who write the Australian content also write for the official Playstation and Xbox mags, you can tell by their slightly dumbed down official mag style.

Still one of the best mags in Australia though, seeing how woeful the competition is.

Finnaly. Now bring on PSO Blue Burst.
What do you mean finally? They've been concentrated on PS2 for about a year now.

They've shifted to PS2 also... Shining Force Neo.

Gone are the Sony hating days - Naka is one of the most vocal PSP proponents.
And yet he's making 3 DS games while PSP only gets another Puyo port. :/

Culex said:
So I'm guessing that Virtua Quest is Sega's last GC game?
Naw, I'm guessing PSO Blue Burst and Super Monkey Ball 3 will both get GC ports (though they'll be multiplatform this time around). There's also the chance for something like Knight N' Knight surfacing or Sega bringing over low key imports like Chaos Field Extend. They also have a GC Bleach game in the works suppossedly.

Imagine Nintendo vs. Capcom vs. Konami vs. Namco vs. Sega vs. Square Enix super hyper megamix Turbo!

:D

if porting all decent former GC exclusive games to other console and not making any more decent game for GC is great partnership, then yeah they are still having great partnership with Nintendo.

Where did this Knight N' knight game rumor started? Iknow youjabe mentioned this game several times Jarrod, but i don't think Sega of Japan ever annouced such a game. I think if this game exsisted then sega would have announced it by now, especially considering we a nearing the end of this generation for some publishers.

I don't think Bleach will come here, just becuase Sega would have to pay for the rights of the animie to Publish this game in America. this animie hasn't been tested to see if it popular to sell the game. Then again they did bring over Astro BOY, with Sega you never know.

Fuck Naka's fanboy ass. He can keep his washed-up little rodent. By ignoring the PS2 for so long, he's made himself irrelevant IMO. Hope Sonic Team eventually gets bought out by EA's consolidation machine and then immediately disbanded. No...I'm not bitter. PEACE.

Yeah, because releasing Billy Hatcher, PSO, and SADX/SA2 on the PS2 would have made him more "relevant".

How about Astro Boy PS2? Did that make him more relevant?

No, but he and Sonic Team were being intentionally obtuse by putting their best game "Sonic Adventures" on a platform that failed miserably. The PS2 was well on its way to beating the brakes off the industry when Sega split off the teams. Naka can eat a dick, he'll never be a major force in the industry. Thankfully AM2 still has common sense...and ten times more talent. PEACE.

Would the Sonic games have sold any better on PS2 though? Sonic Team's actually one of the few Sega teams who made money in the third party shift.... hardly any "miserable failure" there.

Sonic Adventure 2 sold 900k+ in North America alone, became the most successful Sega game on any next-gen system, and it was a PORT. Sonic Heroes sold more on the GC than the PS2/Xbox versions combined.

If anything's made him supposedly irrelevant, it's the fact that Sonic Team has made some very disappointing games. Not that they ignored the PS2, as you choose to believe. You're not bitter? You sure? Then it must be a mental condition and I strongly suggest some Ritalin. PEACE.

Not sure, but it was pretty widespread. IGN even has a listing for KnK.

I think it's likely been canceled (or jumped platforms) by now anyway... then again Sega Rally 2005 actually surfaced after several years of rumored release. Monkey Ball 3 and Atsro Boy were rumored for a long time too before any confirmation, there's quite a few precedents for this sort of thing at Sega.

I think it depends on what kind of game Bleach turns out to be. I could see a Naruto style fighter being brought over for example.
