No. It performed meh to bad in Japan. It performed better in North America and Europe but even then it didn't do anything to really write home about.

And yet they're making another large-scale RPG, yes?

Japan aside, I feel like Nintendo misread the demand for a game like that in NA in particular. The game had a restricted release and yet saw decent success both commercially and critically. Now there's at least a known market for that type of game so Nintendo can capitalize by, at the very least, not having Monolith Soft take X in the wrong direction.

Not guaranteed at all. FireRed/LeafGreen were announced before emerald, and the Pokemon Company, unlike Nintendo, seems to understand the power of marketing and hype when building up to a product's release.

New Shining Project To Be Revealed Later Today

Shining series producer Tsuyoshi Sawada has teased the announcement of a new project today, although this project will not be in the form of an RPG, reports Japanese blog Game Jouhou.

Sawada stated via Twitter that the announcement will happen in Japan sometime tomorrow morning, which is later today for the rest of us. As stated above, the project will not be a role-playing game, but rather a new genre for the series.

Compared to the majority of Wii Rpgs, it was very low on the list and didn't move very much. It did have a decent push in Japan to go along side it and still couldn't even do Tales DTNW.

It also did worse then any of Monolith Softs other Xeno titles (1&2 DS not being counted), but they all trended downward after 1.

I think we'll at least get a Smash character announcement, whether it be a veteran or newcomer and Layton vs. Ace Attorney US release date. Possibly an announcement of the Ace Attorney trilogy on 3DS, too.

I hope they announce Majora's Mask 3D though.
