New 'X' trailer [Monolithsoft] shows uncut gameplay

Came onto GAF expecting people to be excited they showed X.... Find people upset about combat, 'What the hell is this?! The Combat looks so lame?!'.... I don't know why I even bother being optimistic. I guess people got excited because everyone said Xenoblade Chronicles is the best JRPG of last Gen (I think Dark Souls beats, but it surely is #2 for me), but no one actually went to try it out/buy it/look up a youtube video....
Dark Souls isn't JRPG though. It's an ARPG (that happens to be a Japanese made ARPG).

People will get excited again once other things are shown besides the combat.

Just rewatched it.

The player character seems to have a fire buff for his weapon, an AoE spin attack, his gun rapid fire seems to be an ability with a cooldown rather than a weapon switch (EDIT: nope, it's a weapon switch, that could have some interesting uses), then he seems to have a heal as well.
I can't really tell what was going on with the numbers and stuff near the end seeing I don't know Japanese, probably his big main ability in the middle.

Mech seems to have a grenade launcher attack, missiles, a big AoE sweep attack, some defensive shield, and standard rapid fire guns.

I like it. Can't wait to see how the other characters play. Hopefully there's as much variety as Xenoblade with mages (Melia) and weird debuff characters (Riki).

Considering Takahashi's games at least in the Xeno series often had starships from space is it not possible a ship had crash landed there and that is a remnant of that ship's name?
Could be.
"TED STA" means nothing

TED could be the end of anything, like "Restricted" or "Blasted" etc.
STA could be "Station" or a variety of other things that would make more sense than United States

Nope, it's definitely United States. Only possible explanation.

I'm getting hyped for X by doing a second play through of Xenoblade Chronicles, but I've only recently arrived at Gaur Plains. Even with its graphical blemishes and slight performance issues , the game still looks generally beautiful. X come to me! Hopefully, you can use the touch screen display to move some of X's HUD elements.

Love what I saw but from the ND thread.

I have a 3DS but I don't care for it, already has huge and amazing lineup.

Wii U
- Child of Light looks great
- Am I the only one excited for fucking DKC TF? Sheesh GAF c'mon!!
- MK8 looks insane, is it me or it looks even better than the last time
- X looked great but I have to agree the UI looks intrusive, so much going on. I mean you have what it looks like real party members on the left, mini map on the right, level on top and items on the bottom, I mean, USE THE FUCKING GAMEPAD!! I guess this could mean Gamepadless SKU incoming, i have no other explanation.
- Bayonetta 2 will be amazing!!

But I am sure X will be epic!! Cannot judge a game as big as X from one small fight.

I LOL when I saw him jump in a mech to finish off the little one. Overkill!!!

The direct started good but and I figured they show this stuff but was disappointed me was no release dates for a title coming this year!

JRPG just means Japanese RPG. An RPG made in Japan. Which Dark Souls is. It doesn't specify gameplay.

Dark Souls is a JRPG like Mass Effect and Skyrim are WRPGs. It's also an ARPG, sure. But it's a Role Playing Game from Japan.

JRPGs don't stay static and unevolving for 25 years. They never have.

I never got to play Xenoblade - but heard mixed reports. This looks awesome. Can you purchase Xenoblade on the wiiU eshop in Australia?

Nope. only retail on Wii. And its a rare/expensive game already.
Also I'm pretty sure Xenoblade was received with overwhelming praise. I don't remember any mixed reports

In your terms, my #1 JRPG is Xenoblade. In my terms, my #1 JRPG is Dark Souls which feels extremely Japanese to me, battling Kalameet had a lot of similarities to Maleficent in Kingdom Hearts imo.

I don't really care whose terms you want to use, both are best of last gen.

Well the combat kinda looks boring. I was afraid of this. It might still be a good game but ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Looks pretty average, and that Xenoblade-type battle system does not look fun to me. The graphics remind me a lot of Star Ocean 4. And all the incessant battle voices are going to sound hilarious in English.

The mechs did look cool, but I would rather just play Virtual On for that.

I'm surprised at the amount of confusion that came out of this trailer. It's based on Xenoblade. That game wasn't in any way like Monster Hunter. This game isn't an MMO either as stated numerous times. I'm simply amazed at people confusing this game for something it clearly isn't.

The terms need to be updated. By every marker we use, Zelda is now a JRPG, and one of the very best.

It has tactical combat, equipment upgrading, crafting and item collection, quests and side quests, towns, NPCs, and even overworld traversal. The only difference is it has puzzles too.

No one uses "Adventure" genre for anything now except Zelda. It's a useless term that just isolates Nintendo.

Ugly as sin. And man that looks boring. Stand still, hit, hit, hit, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot.

I want to see some of the adventure stuff. The world. The cool shit.

I know you are down on everything 24/7 but..ugly?
the hell

edit: Yeah I wasn't wrong. I just looked at your recent post history...holy crap dude

No, in my opinion JRPG has been used to describe a genre for a long time. A western developer could make a JRPG too.

JRPGs don't stay static of course but evolve as any other genre. WRPG isn't really similar as the term hasn't been used to describe a genre like JRPG has, though WRPGs do have their own style too.

This is an interesting debate though and I can understand your views. I've seen this in neogaf before and it'd be interesting to see a thread about it. But let's not go too off topic with this, I'm sorry for starting it.

I DIDN'T READ THE FIRST PART OF THE POST FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

SOMEONE GET THE MIND ERASER

If it makes you feel better, I don't think the spoiler really doesn't affects much.
It's more of a late game mindfuck and would be fine without it.

That's one thing I like about this footage. The more you watch it the more stuff you begin to notice. Gamexplain's video can't come soon enough for me!

I think it's pretty clear that the smaller monster's health was inflated, seeing how long it took to die despite the level disparity. An excuse to sic the mech on it as well.

I know that won't quash all of the "boring" combat comments, which is fine if you fundamentally didn't like Xenoblade's combat, but I feel in a normal fight you are going to be moving much more against a more aggressive enemy that poses a larger threat. This was just showing off some toys against a caterpie with an inflated hp pool, so there was no real tension and just a lot of shooting. I imagine typically a weak monster like that would be just farm fodder for materials.

Looked decent (compressed as hell though) but that wasn't the best way to show off the mech gameplay— I was expecting some change of pace at the very least, but switch felt very monotonous.

Can't right now. Waiting for quality footage. But trust me, it's there. Mines are the eyes of God. :)

I can notice the english name or part of it is on a huge dome like structure so a possible human colony is situated there? I can't see a flag however per speculation if what you say is true perhaps humans have migrated to a different planet or this is an alternate Earth.

Again details are scarce.

-------------------

Early in the video in the distance you can see a very large dinosaur like enemy.

The was ...... underwhelming to say the least. Lets hope they don't ditch the characters in favor of costumeable ones.

You can actually see two of them in a valley.

I loved what I saw as I can put it in context having played Xenoblade.

Four characters in your party is an improvement already, now we can have both physical and magic damage dealers at the same time, along with the tank and healer, as well as crazier combinations. They need to tone down the frequency of call-outs though.

Without even a mention of "2014" I now firmly belief this game is going to slip into 2015. Even Bayo2 got a "later 2014". It's fine though, no rush. 2015 is going to be an awesome year for me between this and FFXV.

About the constant battle chat, I realised I had been playing the game wrong for a few hours just because of it.

If you play always with the same three characters all the game you'll of course end hating some lines(100+ hours of heropon stuff, lol), but this game strongly encourages changing lineups: chars autolevel so they're always ready to fight, also you could benefit from building up the bonds between them all.

If you do so you discover a lot of in battle dialogue and fun lines. I loved the localization work for this game.
