What is twitch plays pokemon?

Twitch plays pokemon, or TPP, was a social experiment started by an anonymous Australian, who wished to conduct a social experiment to see if twitch could collectively play pokemon through the chat. Chat inputs would be translated to button presses on a hacked rom of pokemon red.

TPP started going viral with 1000 monkeys banging on typewriters, to an all-time peak of over 150000 viewers.

Hacked rom? What is different?
In this version of pokemon red, there is an extra "151" on the title screen. That's it. I like to think the streamer is a bit of a troll.

How do I play?

Say the button you want pushed in chat (a, b, start select, up, down, left, right), please be aware that there is considerable input lag and will take awhile before your inputs are registered.

The owner has also implemented a controversial governance system of anarchy vs democracy.

Anarchy? Democracy?

TwitchPlaysPokemon now has two modes, anarchy and democracy.

Anarchy mode is the "classic" mode, where everyone's inputs are applied immediately.

Democracy mode is vote-based and has a more sophisticated input system.

The arrow shows which side has the current momentum.

In order to switch from one mode to the other, the mode that isn't active needs 75% of votes as indicated by the dotted line, the current percentage of votes is indicated by the black line.

In democracy mode you can compile a sequence of inputs. left2 will move left twice, left2down2 will move left twice and down twice.
