I started a playthrough with LeafGreen yesterday. I chose Bulbasaur. Then I caught a Pidgey and it's currently my highest level Pokemon. Gonna get the Helix Fossil, SS Ticket and will make a Vaporeon. And I play while watching TPP.

I still don't get what compelled Gamefreak to make GUST a normal type move.
It's like Misty's gym, only with 70,000 more people and four deadweights.
For some reason wind type attacks (Whirlwind, Razor Wind, Gust) are all normal type in gen 1, and only Gust got changed in later gens IIRC.

The game being played has to be highly tolerant of the player making mistakes. Pokemon sends you back to the last checkpoint you hit, but doesn't reset the world state or cost you exp, so even guided chaos can progress given enough time. If it were difficult in the slightest or had real consequences for failure, this wouldn't work.

You're one of the lucky ones, then. My nickname in highschool was "Nintendo" because I had no sense of social competency and only wore video game shirts. I took it as a complement at the time, which is hilarious in retrospect, because highschool jocks are some cruel motherfuckers.
Oh man, I think a keychain would be the item I'd want the most out of this. Subtle, yet always with you. Just like Lord Helix's guidance.
In all fairness though, at least learning Ember would have been guaranteed.
USING it, however...
Neither of those would know any moves that hit Ghosts; Flareon has to get leveled up to level 31 to learn Ember and would still have three useless moves, while Hitmonlee's entire learnset doesn't hit Ghosts.
Because I love the game, because I have a huge amount of nostalgia for it, because it's perfectly suited for this control scheme and because, frankly, the lack of color doesn't bother me at all. Why should we be playing a "better" jrpg instead of Pokemon Red again?
